Delta Goodrem representing Australia in the Eurovision

Dogladyloveswine · 16/05/2026 10:00

Delta Goodrem is an existing pop star, worth $24 Million. I thought the Eurovision was meant to be for singers who weren't already pop stars.

I mean, why don't we just send the Rolling Stones then? Or Ed Sheeran? Where does it end? 😳

And why has Eurovision been immensely popular in Australia?

Something to do with its population’s origins maybe?

Yeah just like Israel I guess?

Sorry but your ideas of Australia are hopelessly outdated.

Woodfiresareamazing2 · 16/05/2026 11:28

Ditto Israel.

For more than just not being a European country...

Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia…
North African countries are eligible, too.

DeedlessIndeed · 16/05/2026 11:44

All this eurovision hate! Get a grip. The Terry Wogan era of snideness and derision is still in many peoples memories. It is not like that anymore.

How any times a year is TV interrupted for sport, or a royal event, or a host of other things.

Australia was included as they have a long history of watching it. They are good competitors and there are already rules from the EBF that they won't host if they win, so as to not deter any european nation.

UK do well when we take it seriously - we almost won in 2022 so people who say it is all fixed are talking out of their arse.

Loads of european countries send famous singers and the songs regularly make the charts. If you chose not to follow then how can you complain about not knowing the songs.

Basically, if you don't enjoy Eurovision - fine. Is it not good we enjoy different things?

Growing up, it was the first time I got an insight into other european countries culture. We should be happy we have something positive and fun and happy with our neighbours. And the fact it is sometimes a bit silly is fine by me.

PollyBell · 16/05/2026 11:44

Uk is not in the EU anymore

When on earth did that happen? I must have missed it.

Reassuringly, we have not actually moved continent, actually.

I remember her from back in the day too. She sure does have a stunning voice.

Lest we forget that Aussie singer Gina G represented the UK in this 1996, finishing 8th, with this ditty.

Australian broadcaster SBS is an associate member of the EBU. And the EBU can invite associate members to Eurovision. I suspect Australia pays reasonable money towards it to, though not as much as the UK does to automatically qualify for the final.

whynotwhatknot · 16/05/2026 11:53

we would have won if ukraine hadnt been invaded that was a pure symapthy vote

also greece always vote for cyprus and vicee versa if theyre both in it no matter what the song

nomas · 16/05/2026 11:54

UK could send Coldplay or whatever if we wanted to do, but the humiliation for big names when coming at the bottom is a big deterrent.

AmIReallyTheGrownup · 16/05/2026 11:55

Sending Delta is kind of like sending Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Means something if you’re over 40, complete oblivion to anyone under 30.

I don’t think she’s in any danger of ruining her career over it.

The ‘90s really were something else, weren’t they 😂

I don’t get why a non European country is allowed to enter the contest

Exactly!! Surely this is more weird (and annoying) it should be 'Worldvision' of Shiteness.

InLoveWithAI · 16/05/2026 12:01

Wasn't going to bother watching it, as I usually don't.

But this thread has inspired me to watch 😁

Year’s ago established stars did used to go in it (Cliff Richard, Lulu) when they were still popular. Big stars would never enter today. Adele representing us would be so weird, especially if she got null points 😂

If Australia win, does everyone have to schlep over there next year?!?

I think they have a clause that, if they do win, they have to host it the following year by partnering with a country in Europe. Otherwise, it's a huge amount of travelling for the vast majority and all the issues with time zones. It already doesn't start until 9pm and finish until well after 1am in central Europe.

If they should happen to win, I suppose they could either ask the country that came second to co-host, or otherwise see if there's a European country with who they already have a strong cultural relationship (and maybe shared language)?!

The UK has hosted 9 times - more than any other country - and 5 of those times, we didn't win the year before; so we seem to be the go-to default when a country wins but can't host the following year.

My big concern is what will happen if Israel wins. That would be an absolute binfire when making plans for next year - if next year even goes ahead.

World Vision is both a major charity and a tv production company, so the name is kinda taken.

A lot of English people really hate Australia and Australians, it’s kinda funny really.

Yes I'm aware of the World Vison charity, I was being sarcastic

AlexaStopAlexaNo · 16/05/2026 12:15

Israel will win so I don’t think it matters who else performs.

Endoadnowarrior · 16/05/2026 12:15

Dogladyloveswine · 16/05/2026 10:20

Ah, I didn't know that we had sent famous people before! We used to watch this religiously as kids, but I don't bother these days. I was just shocked to see Delta, as I remember her from when she was quite famous!

We've often entered already famous acts!!

In the 90s, Michael Ball, Sonia, Katrina and the waves

In the noughties
Scooch
Various pop idol contestants who'd got record deals

In the 2010s
Blue
Englebert Humperdink!
Bonnie Tyler

In 2024 it was Olly Alexander!

As people have said, its the song and not the artist.

Rhaidimiddim · 16/05/2026 12:17

SpringsOnTheWay · 16/05/2026 10:05

We’ve done the same. The darkness did a song, Katrina and the waves.

Cliff Richard, Sandie Shaw, Lulu, Olivia Newton-John. All big names before they did Eurovision.

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 16/05/2026 12:18

It will be interesting to see how things progress with the new Asian version of the contest - oddly enough also organised by the EBU and slated to be called 'Eurovision Asia' rather than the much more obvious 'Asiavision'. The first one takes place later this year.

I did hear that there are suggestions Israel could 'move' to the Asian contest; but then again, geographically, you could probably argue that Australia would be more at home there, even though they culturally share far more with Europe.

I'm presuming that they'll use English as the official language, same as with Eurovision - which will be a bit weird, considering that it isn't a native language of any of the participants.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 16/05/2026 12:20

AgnesX · 16/05/2026 10:06

The BBC were waxing enthusiastic about Australia's entry (which I didn't care for personally). I wonder if there's going to be some tactical voting resulting in Aus having to host the competition next year!

It wouldn't be held in Oz. A European country would be nominated to host instead. The most obvious choice is us, but unlikely since we just did it for Ukraine in 2023.

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 16/05/2026 12:25

AlexaStopAlexaNo · 16/05/2026 12:15

Israel will win so I don’t think it matters who else performs.

You may well be right. I wonder where the future of the contest will go from there, though? I still remember the immense sigh of collective relief last year when Austria pipped it at the very last moment.

Would it be safe/politically expedient to host it in Tel Aviv? If not, who would partner with them... and would their cards then be marked by the dissenters? Would people who didn't boycott it this time because of Israel's inclusion as a competitor maybe have a change of heart next year if they were actually hosting it?

If so, I wonder if there will be a redrawing of the rules to make it strictly for countries from actual Europe (sorry, Oz), or a 'side version' that looks very like the main one and takes over - in the same way as when somebody is an arse on a WhatsApp group, they don't get booted out; everybody else just sets up a new group without them in it!

NoCareNoFair · 16/05/2026 12:29

There is actually another song contest, albeit led by Russia because of being blocked from Eurovision. They played some clips in a news report on the BBC last year. It sounded equally interesting and it's a shame we can't watch that one too:
