AIBU to go to A&E for this?

Hi! Just looking for some advice if anyone has had similar

I basically pushed the exercise a bit too far yesterday and ran about 15km in zone 5 the majority of it. I got a PB but definitely exhausted myself

this morning I noticed when I peed it was quite dark reddy/brown, and I’ve just gone again and it’s darker still and is a deep brown/red colour.

would I be as well just to go to a&e?

pharmacist can’t help, no walk in centres nearby, i can’t get an appointment at the GP as there’s none left, they couldn’t give any advice over the phone either without a consultation which is fair enough. NHS24 doesnt let you call them for advice or out of hours appointments within GP opening times (or at least, they didn’t used to last time I called a few years ago) so I won’t be able to call them until 5.30 ish anyway and by then it’ll probably be hours to get a call back since it’s a Friday night and they might just advise a&e anyway

obviously I’d rather not sit for hours in a&e but would this be an ok reason to go? Don’t want to waste their time but just not sure where else to go? Never had this before and never had rhabdo in the past so it’s just all new to me so apologies if it’s a stupid question, just a bit unsure and worried in case it’s that

thanks in advance 😊

I would ring 111, they will find you an appointment nearby for a GP.

It’s NHS24 up here and you can’t until GP closes, and then it’s hours wait just to hear back and the out of hours GP closes at midnight x

Have you rehydrated properly? I’d drink electrolyte fluids for a few hours and see how you go. Any other symptoms? If it’s just the colour of your wee I’d not go to A&E for that.

I didn’t drink nearly as much as I should have beforehand- tbh I only meant to go for 3km and just kept going! I’m absolutely exhausted today and feel like every muscle is aching but it’s hard to tell if that’s normal because I’ve pushed it too far

I’ll keep drinking loads of water, I’ve been drinking lots this morning but it’s just getting darker each time I pee x

Try rehydration sachets or coconut water on top of lots and lots of water.

Grammarninja · 15/05/2026 13:54

If it's getting darker with lots of fluids on board, I'd definitely be going to a&e and I'm someone who never goes! I broke my leg in three places and hobbled around for weeks before I went but I'd go for what you're describing.

Personally I don’t believe anyone can really advise someone about medical issues on the internet. I can’t tell from what you’ve written whether you need to go to A&E or not .
But worth reading up on it and also considering whether you actually feel physically unwell or it’s just the colour of your urine .

I would advise you seek medical advice as you may need your bloods checked for ck levels and kidney function in case you have rhabdomyolosis. Hope you get sorted.

Gadaboutthegr8 · 15/05/2026 13:55

Yes you definitely need to seek help OP - dark urine and muscle aches after high physical exertion are red flags for rhabdomyolysis, which if untreated can damage both the kidneys and heart.

FaintlyMacabre · 15/05/2026 13:55

Could be rhabdomyolysis- please go to A&E or seek some other type of emergency medical attention.

Chuffingcupboard · 15/05/2026 13:57

I would go to A&E if fluids are not helping. Had a friend of a friend really seriously ill with kidney issues and brown urine was the visible symptom+ badly aching legs.

thinkofsomethingdifferent · 15/05/2026 13:58

In that case OP I would go to A&E. Here with 111 you can still get an appointment if the GP is open, I hadn’t realised this wasn’t the case elsewhere so apologies.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 15/05/2026 14:00

I would go to A&E if I'm honest OP.

Gymnopediegivesmethewillies · 15/05/2026 14:00

Oh love! It definitely sounds like A and E reading the responses above. Perhaps take a urine sample with you and tell them what you are concerned about rather than leaving it up to the receptionist to decide how to triage you. You don’t want them classifying you as a possible UTI when it could be much more serious. Best of luck. Keep us updated if you can x

Pinribbons · 15/05/2026 14:02

I'd drink plenty and give it 24 hours.

I don't think A&E would do more than give that advice anyway.

whatareyouwaitingforr · 15/05/2026 14:03

if you had rhabdo you’d know. What a silly thing to do

Mischance · 15/05/2026 14:05

You need help. If A&E is the only way to get it then you have no choice - not ideal, but what else can you do?

Gadaboutthegr8 · 15/05/2026 14:05

A&E will almost certainly do bloods to check for rhabdomyolysis and to assess renal function.

darksideofthetoon · 15/05/2026 14:07

Congratulations on your run.

This is definitely something to get checked out asap and think a valid reason to visit A&E given that you have tried alternatives already.

lunar1 · 15/05/2026 14:09

Rhabdo can be subtle, what is your A&E like? At our you can turn up and be seen by a GP if that is what’s most appropriate, but I would say if you’ve been hydrated today, you should go get a blood test.

VividDeer · 15/05/2026 14:13

Id ring out of hours at opening time. 6pm for us

Unless you feel really unwell

Badlands1 · 15/05/2026 14:13

Definitely need a CK and U and Es check
I wouldn't wait 24 hours - I've seen it in runners before

BurnoutBee · 15/05/2026 14:14

I would go. I wouldn’t mess about with a potential rhabdo diagnosis. Let us know how you get on. Never known anyone to get this but it’s always something to be aware of if you’ve really pushed yourself in the 24 hours prior.

Maia77 · 15/05/2026 14:15

It looks like it could be runners bladder. It might take a couple of days to resolve. ' For most cases of exercise-induced hematuria, the causes are related to the intensity and duration of activity, as well as the hydration status of the athlete. Longer and more intense events have been known to more likely cause hematuria. It is most common in runners, especially those running more than 10,000 meters.'

rainbowstardrops · 15/05/2026 14:15

I think that if you can’t call your equivalent of 111 where you are until 5.30pm then you might as well sit in A&E. Probably better to be safe than sorry.
