AIBU to go to A&E for this?

Hi! Just looking for some advice if anyone has had similar

I basically pushed the exercise a bit too far yesterday and ran about 15km in zone 5 the majority of it. I got a PB but definitely exhausted myself

this morning I noticed when I peed it was quite dark reddy/brown, and I’ve just gone again and it’s darker still and is a deep brown/red colour.

would I be as well just to go to a&e?

pharmacist can’t help, no walk in centres nearby, i can’t get an appointment at the GP as there’s none left, they couldn’t give any advice over the phone either without a consultation which is fair enough. NHS24 doesnt let you call them for advice or out of hours appointments within GP opening times (or at least, they didn’t used to last time I called a few years ago) so I won’t be able to call them until 5.30 ish anyway and by then it’ll probably be hours to get a call back since it’s a Friday night and they might just advise a&e anyway

obviously I’d rather not sit for hours in a&e but would this be an ok reason to go? Don’t want to waste their time but just not sure where else to go? Never had this before and never had rhabdo in the past so it’s just all new to me so apologies if it’s a stupid question, just a bit unsure and worried in case it’s that

thanks in advance 😊

Call 111. They will get you an appointment if needed.

And hydrate and rehydrate properly in the future.

Emeraldsinthewild · 15/05/2026 17:34

Thanks for the advice

yeah rhabdo was my main worry- I peed again and it was just the same and I’ve been drinking loads today and it doesn’t seem to be getting better

going to go to a&e and get checked for it

if you had rhabdo you’d know. What a silly thing to do

yeah, you’d know because you have dark urine and muscle pain, which is what I have, hence why I’m worried about it

ok I maybe should have taken it a bit easier but it wasn’t exactly an ultramarathon ffs, hardly a silly thing to run a bit further and try to get a Pb! It’s pretty normal when you run to try and push yourself

Clefable · 15/05/2026 17:39

Definitely get checked, that’s a giant red flag for rhabdo. Make sure they know it’s followed extreme physical exertion.

StiffAsAVicar · 15/05/2026 17:41

Good luck OP, don’t listen to the person minimising your worries! Get yourself to A&E that’s what they’re there for! Goodness knows we all pay enough tax towards it!

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 15/05/2026 17:43

I would go. Take a sample with you to show in triage. Keep drinking, ideally with something rehydration-ish rather than plain water. Round here GPs won’t do bloods for rhabdo anyway given it needs to be treated on the spot.

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 15/05/2026 17:44

I'm a ex marathon runner.

One of my running club friends got this from doing exactly the same thing and was very poorly because they ignored the symptoms of rhabdo. Definitely go and get seen and mention the physical exertion and the muscle aches.

Good Luck OP.

HollyhockDays · 15/05/2026 17:53

I’d definitely get it checked out asap.

Monty36 · 15/05/2026 17:56

Talk to a chemist. If you have pain you may have a kidney infection.

rainbowstardrops · 16/05/2026 10:52

How did you get on at A&E?

treetophome · 16/05/2026 10:54

Go to A&E. You could have rhabdomyolosis and that can be very serious and cause urine the colour of coke.

It severely affects your kidneys and the only cure is flushing your kidneys with a massive amount of water (usually IV drip)

MissMoneyFairy · 16/05/2026 11:02

Good luck, hope they can help you.

jamimmi · 16/05/2026 11:53

I do.hope its not rabdo, you may also have renal damage due to the intensity of exercise. Zone 5 for more than short bursts is dangeous and harmful, it does not come within in the bounds of normal pushing yourself. When you have recovered please look at your mental health relationship with running. As a healthcare professional it sounds very unhealthy. If you were my patient i would be concerned

Monetsbridge · 16/05/2026 14:54

What watches say is zone 5 and what really is can be very different, though. I can run anywhere from 20 minutes to 2.5 hours, and my watch will tell me I'm in zone 5 the whole time. My heart rate is just fast when exercising, but I don't necessarily feel like I'm pushing myself. It's just not calibrated to match my reality, but based on statistics.

However, I agree that pushing yourself too much can be dangerous.

I get runner's haematuria sometimes, but I was checked out (CT scan and cystoscopy) and there was no reason for it, so it was assumed to just be from running. It doesn't happen often now - I went through a few months where it was every few weeks, then it just sort of stopped. I tried drinking less beforehand as well as drinking more, as there were possible explanations both ways (empty bladder might mean the walls bounce together and get abrasions, causing bleeding; full bladder did something else, can't remember what, but also could cause bleeding! So it depends on the person - sounds like they don't entirely know what causes it). In my case, it only ever lasted for a couple of hours afterwards, was only pink/red urine not coke-coloured, and didn't get worse like it sounds yours did. I think A&E is the right call. I do find that I don't always drink much when running, or eat, and I can still run for a couple of hours, as long as rehydrate well afterwards. Eating or drinking on the go can cause me all kinds of stomach upsets, and I'm better with just a few small sips.

cannynotsay · 16/05/2026 15:01

How you doing now OP

Gymnopediegivesmethewillies · 15/05/2026 14:00

Oh love! It definitely sounds like A and E reading the responses above. Perhaps take a urine sample with you and tell them what you are concerned about rather than leaving it up to the receptionist to decide how to triage you. You don’t want them classifying you as a possible UTI when it could be much more serious. Best of luck. Keep us updated if you can x

The receptionists don't decide how to triage people in ED, the triage nurses do.

TheBloomingDahlia · 16/05/2026 16:05

A person I follow on SM was hospitalised for rabdo a little while ago, she didn’t realise anything was seriously wrong until a few days later when she couldn’t move her arms so I think it’s not always sudden in some cases.
Hope you are doing OK OP and they were able to diagnose and start treatment for whatever is wrong

SixLeggedSugarBug · 16/05/2026 16:18

Hope you are being looked after OP and it's nothing too serious.

People on here should not discourage anyone from going to A & E, even doctors cant diagnose from a few words on a forum.

Daftypants · 16/05/2026 17:27

Get to A&E !!!
Hope you’re there now

Laurmolonlabe · 16/05/2026 22:49

NHS111- it's nothing you need A&E for, you sound dehydrated and have obviously overdone things, drink plenty and ring 111, if they think it is serious enough they will tell you to go to A&E, but
I suspect they will justrecommend rehydration salts etc, if there are other issues apart from over exercise it could indicate liver damage ( mahogany coloured urine is a common symptom of hepatitis)
but rest and a fat free diet are really the only treatment, so A&E wouldn't really help even if it is that .
