AIBU to go to A&E for this?

Hi! Just looking for some advice if anyone has had similar

I basically pushed the exercise a bit too far yesterday and ran about 15km in zone 5 the majority of it. I got a PB but definitely exhausted myself

this morning I noticed when I peed it was quite dark reddy/brown, and I’ve just gone again and it’s darker still and is a deep brown/red colour.

would I be as well just to go to a&e?

pharmacist can’t help, no walk in centres nearby, i can’t get an appointment at the GP as there’s none left, they couldn’t give any advice over the phone either without a consultation which is fair enough. NHS24 doesnt let you call them for advice or out of hours appointments within GP opening times (or at least, they didn’t used to last time I called a few years ago) so I won’t be able to call them until 5.30 ish anyway and by then it’ll probably be hours to get a call back since it’s a Friday night and they might just advise a&e anyway

obviously I’d rather not sit for hours in a&e but would this be an ok reason to go? Don’t want to waste their time but just not sure where else to go? Never had this before and never had rhabdo in the past so it’s just all new to me so apologies if it’s a stupid question, just a bit unsure and worried in case it’s that

thanks in advance 😊

Poor you, OP. I do hope you're ok, it sounds like it was quite worrying 😟

Zippidydoodah · 17/05/2026 00:02

wow, I’ve just googled rhabdomyolosis and it sounds likely and also dangerous. I hope you’re ok, @Emeraldsinthewild 💐

Namechangedforthis25 · 17/05/2026 00:10

Why are people who aren’t medics telling op she doesn’t need to go to A and E. What do they know?!

mamakoukla · 17/05/2026 00:16

I’d get it checked out soon. Speaking as a parent of a child who had rhabdo. Look after your health and learn from this

PunnyPlumPanda · 17/05/2026 00:16

rhabdo suspected go now

Happyjoe · 17/05/2026 00:34

A&E, but you have my sympathies going at the weekend. Hope be ok OP.

NHS111- it's nothing you need A&E for, you sound dehydrated and have obviously overdone things, drink plenty and ring 111, if they think it is serious enough they will tell you to go to A&E, but
I suspect they will justrecommend rehydration salts etc, if there are other issues apart from over exercise it could indicate liver damage ( mahogany coloured urine is a common symptom of hepatitis)
but rest and a fat free diet are really the only treatment, so A&E wouldn't really help even if it is that .

@Laurmolonlabe

You are very wrong and this is terrible advice. I suggest you educate yourself and stop giving poor medical advice when you have no idea what you're talking about.

IsabellaVireauxLaurent · 17/05/2026 03:18

personally, id presume is more water needed

LBFseBrom · 17/05/2026 05:00

Sounds like dehyration. Urine goes dark when that happens. Drink lots of water.
You probably need some electrolytes too but water first.
Coconut water and bananas provide electrolytes.

notatinydancer · 17/05/2026 05:10

@Emeraldsinthewilddid you go to ED ?

Josephinemylove · 17/05/2026 05:23

OP- hope you’re ok !

EricTheHalfASleeve · 17/05/2026 05:26

That's rhabdomyalosis - defo go to ED. Keep tanking water on the way & whilst waiting. that's the main treatment.

XelaM · 17/05/2026 06:27

Hope you got on ok at the hospital

XelaM · 17/05/2026 06:28

How did you get on @Emeraldsinthewild ? Hope you got it sorted and are feeling better

Gadaboutthegr8 · 15/05/2026 14:05

A&E will almost certainly do bloods to check for rhabdomyolysis and to assess renal function.

Im an ED nurse. I agree with Gadaboutthegr8.. A+E for bloods and rhabdo check.

FernsInValley · 17/05/2026 06:46

Get well soon OP

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 17/05/2026 07:01

Honestly I read the OP and thought uh oh it sounds like rhabdomyolosis.

My friend has this and was quite unwell.
Side note: afterwards she also had temporary hair loss.

Hope you are okay OP.

Relaxd · 17/05/2026 07:15

I had this after running 5k, turned out to be a kidney stone that was ok but had been wobbled up into my pipes and caused bleeding. My pee was dark like Ribena/pepsi although cleared the next morning - it still needed dealing with at A&E and after an ultrasound found the problem that had to have a stent put in. I did have to make a strong point about the urine colour being so dark even though temporarily before they brought a urologist down to investigate.

Namechangedforspooky · 17/05/2026 07:18

Yes same here, def sounds like it could be rhabdo.
I’m medical and I’ve also had rhabdo myself. You can feel completely well but just have the classic Coca Cola urine.
Hopefully you’ve got checked by now. You need a set of bloods (UE / CK) to check your kidney function and also probably some fluid.
When I had it I was desperately thirsty so had actually inadvertently treated myself before the bloods came back!
I hope you’re ok

katepilar · 17/05/2026 08:13

Hope you are all ok by now, OP:

Just wanted to say "lots and lots" of water isnt the best, kidneys can apparently process 300ml an hours.
Adding a few grains of salt into a glass of water can be helpful in better absorbsion of luquids.

Watdidusay · 17/05/2026 08:17

I hope some of the posters here who don't understand rhabdomyolysis now have a better understanding! You definitely wouldn't "definitely know'.

Please give an update @Gymnopediegivesmethewillies

Imdunfer · 17/05/2026 08:23

Drink lots and lots of water is dangerous advice, it can cause your brain to swell. One guy died after the London Marathon a few years back from drinking to much plain water.

It needs to be electrolyte balanced.
