AIBU to go to A&E for this?

Hi! Just looking for some advice if anyone has had similar

I basically pushed the exercise a bit too far yesterday and ran about 15km in zone 5 the majority of it. I got a PB but definitely exhausted myself

this morning I noticed when I peed it was quite dark reddy/brown, and I’ve just gone again and it’s darker still and is a deep brown/red colour.

would I be as well just to go to a&e?

pharmacist can’t help, no walk in centres nearby, i can’t get an appointment at the GP as there’s none left, they couldn’t give any advice over the phone either without a consultation which is fair enough. NHS24 doesnt let you call them for advice or out of hours appointments within GP opening times (or at least, they didn’t used to last time I called a few years ago) so I won’t be able to call them until 5.30 ish anyway and by then it’ll probably be hours to get a call back since it’s a Friday night and they might just advise a&e anyway

obviously I’d rather not sit for hours in a&e but would this be an ok reason to go? Don’t want to waste their time but just not sure where else to go? Never had this before and never had rhabdo in the past so it’s just all new to me so apologies if it’s a stupid question, just a bit unsure and worried in case it’s that

thanks in advance 😊

Mumto2at · 17/05/2026 08:37

Update please I'm curious

weeat · 17/05/2026 08:37

I’ve had this before…it’s caused by friction on your bladder wall. Give it a week, it’ll settle. Nothing to worry about OP, I promise. I (annoyingly) got mine from walking fast!! not even running. Scared the crap out of me but it’s short lived

Dizzydrizzy · 17/05/2026 08:45

I’ve never heard of this. I hope you’re OK and have been seen

CheeseAndTomatoSandwichWithMayo · 17/05/2026 08:47

I'm very invested (and concerned) as to how you are @Emeraldsinthewild

I would advise you seek medical advice as you may need your bloods checked for ck levels and kidney function in case you have rhabdomyolosis. Hope you get sorted.

This. Rhabdommyolosis. It is serious

Wouldn't that be bright red from fresh blood not dark from muscle breakdown?

merrymelody · 17/05/2026 08:53

If you’re pissing blood, you should be going to A&E.

Tvtimes · 17/05/2026 09:02

Wow I’ve never heard of this. And I’m a runner who is terrible at hydrating

It’s incredibly rare and caused by people doing silly things, like preparing for a 3k run and doing 15-16k under fuelled and under hydrated.

Reallynotthatbothered · 17/05/2026 09:14

Hope they’re OK. I’d never heard of rhabdomyolysis before this thread and just looked it up. I guess you’d be kept in hospital and rehydrated?

Awfulinlaws · 17/05/2026 09:16

Go to A and E. Take liquids. Can anyone advise what the best thing is alongside water?

Salt and sugar in the right quantities but it's easier to buy balanced electrolytes.

Water alone can be fatal.

Emeraldsinthewild · 15/05/2026 17:36

yeah, you’d know because you have dark urine and muscle pain, which is what I have, hence why I’m worried about it

ok I maybe should have taken it a bit easier but it wasn’t exactly an ultramarathon ffs, hardly a silly thing to run a bit further and try to get a Pb! It’s pretty normal when you run to try and push yourself

Kazzy5055 · 17/05/2026 09:31

Yes please go get checked out in A & E. Especially if you have been increasing your protein intake and exercise. I'm a nurse and have seen the serious consequences of over-exercising on the muscles, kidneys and heart. I also had a colleague who was admitted to ICU because of this. Dark urine can just be dehydration but also may contain blood and protein. You say your urine is getting darker despite hydration so this definitely needs looking at.

Okiedokie123 · 17/05/2026 10:19

@Emeraldsinthewild hoping you’ve been seen by a&e and are now getting better. Thinking of you x

MamaBobo · 17/05/2026 10:38

Hope that you have been seen and are getting sorted out OP.

I just came on to say, for anyone else who might need the service, that you can call NHS24 in Scotland (based on OP saying “up here”) at any time for potentially serious issues that are not immediately life threatening. They can also help with things you would normally see a GP for outside GP opening hours. It’s a 24 hours a day service for anything you might need otherwise need A&E for and they can direct you to services and the right care.

This is from the NHS24 Website.

When to phone 111
Phone 111 for free if you think you need A&E but it’s not life or limb threatening. The 111 service can also help if you’re in mental health distress, or your GP practice, pharmacy, or dental practice is closed.

ClearFruit · 17/05/2026 11:37

How are you OP?

tommyhoundmum · 17/05/2026 13:22

Emeraldsinthewild · 15/05/2026 13:46

It’s NHS24 up here and you can’t until GP closes, and then it’s hours wait just to hear back and the out of hours GP closes at midnight x

Take a urine sample if you can

Stop giving medical advice that's wrong.

Runner's bladder improves after drinking plenty. The op's urine was getting darker and she had muscle pain which suggests rhabdomyolysis.

I swear to god the bad medical advice on here is going to kill someone one day.

I agree, I do wonder if the medical board is really safe any more

The receptionists don't decide how to triage people in ED, the triage nurses do.

I think that used to be the case but I’m not sure it is now. I was in A&E with my mum just before Christmas, we had to check in with the receptionist immediately but the triage nurse took around 90 minutes to get to new arrivals, so presumably someone, somewhere was making an initial assessment as to whether you needed to be seen urgently?
