AIBU to be irritated by people transferring money on banking apps at the till?

Noticed this started a few years back, getting worse and really annoys me. Go to a shop - any clothes, supermarket etc. The customer in front of me realises needed to pay. Goes on the banking app and transfers money from one account to the card paying on.

Why do they have to wait til they are being served? Plus many shops, internet signal is poor. Then the staff member has to get a supervisor to save transaction whilst customer goes outside to get a better signal.

Phones have calculators. Add things as you do shopping. Check bank balance. If requires more money, do the transfer. Then go to the tills.

How often does this actually happen ? I can’t imagine it happens a lot. Occasionally I’ve had to move money as I’ve miscalculated or not had signal to do it elsewhere. I just do it quickly literally less than 20 seconds ? Doesn’t seem to cause any drama

It’s the modern day equivalent of people boarding the bus then standing looking for their purse to buy a ticket.

Blundl · 14/05/2026 19:10

It's a lot easier to just pay by credit card, why don't people just do that then pay it off each month by DD

TakeALookAtTheseSwatches · 14/05/2026 19:13

I did this today and it was an oversight on my part. I had forgotten to transfer money from my savings to my current account. Surely it's mostly the case that it's slipped someone's mind rather than them choosing to do it at that moment?

Becsue not everyone chooses to have or is able to have a credit card.

MidnightPatrol · 14/05/2026 19:14

I sometimes do this because my main card is an American Express - and if they don’t accept that I need to use a visa.

The visa I have on my phone I keep a small amount of cash on for security purposes, and so sometimes it’s not enough for what I’m buying.

I have found just not getting wound up at tills an easy way to reduce life’s impatience

People do it because they can
They didn’t realise how much it would till up at
They have had a shit week and threw in a top as a pick me up

Who knows?

I was in M&S food hall today, lunchtime so busy-ish - the amount of huffing from people wedging themselves into a fridge/some else’s trolley triangle them realising they then couldn’t proceed because others were coming down the aisle the other way in a sort of unwritten left hand moving arrangement. Would’ve been quicker to wait!

It’s a great observation exercise

Hmm, maybe they don't have a credit card or maybe they do but dont want to use it, who can say?

LlynTegid · 14/05/2026 19:30

Never seen it myself, though agreeing it is an avoidable delay. Some people have a complete inability to plan ahead, it's not just a trait of politicians.

tangobravo · 14/05/2026 19:30

I very often do this, usually when I'm on a very tight budget and every penny counts (so I only want exactly what I need to be transferred to my spends card). I think it adds about 3-5 seconds to my transaction given I load the app up first of course. I don't do it on the bus or anything though

Wynter25 · 14/05/2026 19:31

I do this

Backedoffhackedoff · 14/05/2026 19:32

I use sprive which gives you cash back to offset against the mortgage. It means whenever in a qualifying shop you have to buy a voucher online via sprive, download it and pay. It takes ages 😂 I do use self checkout where I can to prevent holding up the queue but honestly I don’t care that much really.

ButterYellowFlowers · 14/05/2026 19:41

You must be short a spanner in the tool box if you don’t realise that people do not mean to do it. And adding up all the prices would take a lot longer than a 1 minute pause at the till to move money over.

I can’t get a credit card… I’m a student with no income so they won’t give me one.

Cosyblankets · 14/05/2026 19:46

Can't say I've ever noticed.
You're really easily irritated

Shoopideedoop · 14/05/2026 19:46

In my experience working on a till, often enough to be annoying! During a 5 hour shift on the till, usually at least 8-10 times.
Then you have the people who wait until everything has been scanned to start rooting in their bag for their purse/wallet/phone, which takes an unreasonable amount of time too!
My own bag is really good at sucking all the most important items right down to the bottom/corners immediately, so I understand the why, but not the timing.
Last but not least (annoying) are the people who want to return an item without receipt...they always fail to understand that they are one of (on average) 10 per day who think 'just this once, be reasonable'...

And yes, my own opinion is that constant understaffing means that customer service goes downhill! We as employees also suffer from that approach, but can't do anything to change it, so all the complaining and/or rudeness in the world won't improve things, it just makes us hate our jobs even more :(

OnionFishDiamond · 14/05/2026 19:48

I do this but mostly because I use Sprive to pay so need to buy a gift card to get cashback on my mortgage.

Balloonhearts · 14/05/2026 20:09

I've had 2 customers do this just today. Its fucking annoying, holds everything and everyone up and is completely avoidable.

Are people seriously that stupid that they don't realise they are going to need to pay and that this requires money to be in an easily accessible account?

They just don't think; they drift around in a stupor, navel gazing or pissing about on their phones and don't ever seem to engage their brains. Retail can be rage inducing at times.

Berlinlover · 14/05/2026 20:20

I work on a supermarket checkout and this annoys me too.

Flannelfeet · 14/05/2026 20:30

Wonder if your talking about me? 🤔 😆 🤣. I was at the till yesterday and tried to use my contactless at the till and it asked me to put my card in, I had actually forgotten it was a new card (lost the old one) and first time using it, had forgotten the bloody pin so had to go onto online banking app to find it.

If it was me...im sooooo sorry, it was a pain in the arse for me too! 😳

mondaytosunday · 14/05/2026 20:34

Gosh how often does that happen? It never has in my experience. You must be very unlucky.

I think things were much worse 30 or 40 years ago, when people got to the checkout, packed all their bags, and then looked for their cheque book, which was invariably in a different compartment in their handbag to their purse with a cheque guarantee card, and then they would realise that they needed to find a pen to write the cheque 😆

namechangetheworld · 14/05/2026 20:41

I do this, if I've miscalculated the cost.

I also have to fuck about logging into my Tesco app to bring up my Clubcard QR code to scan. Much easier to do standing at the checkout rather than when trying to manoeuvre a trolley and two kids around the shop.

Also once had to call DH to transfer me some money, as I didn't have enough.

You would hate me!

Bananalanacake · 15/05/2026 00:04

I prefer to use cash.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 15/05/2026 00:04

Snorted because you could've been talking about me

I forget! Will do better
