AIBU to be irritated by people transferring money on banking apps at the till?

Noticed this started a few years back, getting worse and really annoys me. Go to a shop - any clothes, supermarket etc. The customer in front of me realises needed to pay. Goes on the banking app and transfers money from one account to the card paying on.

Why do they have to wait til they are being served? Plus many shops, internet signal is poor. Then the staff member has to get a supervisor to save transaction whilst customer goes outside to get a better signal.

Phones have calculators. Add things as you do shopping. Check bank balance. If requires more money, do the transfer. Then go to the tills.

You should be irritated by the convenience culture which makes our lives too easy for us. So easy you don’t have to go into a bank anymore for most things like transfers - which in the long run has meant branches are closing down and job losses.

It’s convenient to transfer as and when you need it now, so we don’t have to be so organised.

As I mentioned in my PP, your phone has a calculator use it. Or if you using scan n go handsets or mobile (Sainsbury’s does this) has a running total

I can understand people with not much money doing this but otherwise from this are people really that bothered about the 10p extra interest they might get on a savings account that they transfer the exact amount for their shopping each time.

I do this, if I've miscalculated the cost.

I also have to fuck about logging into my Tesco app to bring up my Clubcard QR code to scan. Much easier to do standing at the checkout rather than when trying to manoeuvre a trolley and two kids around the shop.

Also once had to call DH to transfer me some money, as I didn't have enough.

You would hate me!

Edited

You can add your club card to your apple or google pay wallet so you don’t have to log in. My local Tesco has v poor connectivity so it was a game changer when I did this! 😊

It's a lot easier to just pay by credit card, why don't people just do that then pay it off each month by DD

Ive never owned a credit card and never want one.

We call them debt cards, if you have to use a credit card then you cant afford it.

Dancingspleen1 · 15/05/2026 08:56

I do this occasionally. It probably looks like I'm transferring money but its a cash back app and I'm paying with a gift card that can't be generated untill I know the cost. I am aware of the extra time if its busy and I do start the whole process off before I get to the till but at the end of the day it gets me an extra £30 a month for nothing so I don't really care :)

Then you've slightly missed the point of them.

Yes it happens often , then as mentioned the shop loyalty card, and very often gift cards as well. I work in a supermarket and the local council free school meal vouchers for holiday are sent via an email link, which sends you to a site where you choose your supermarket and it then generates a voucher which you can scan at the till or print out at home. Most people scan at the till but always seem to generate the voucher at the till as well, and if they have more than one child they have to do this process for each individual voucher

ConfusedSoShutUp · 15/05/2026 10:31

I very occasionally have to do this if I make an impulse purchase. But I will do it in the queue.
But in one out of town retail park the signal is so horrendous you have to be in the carpark to get ANY functionality on your phone. So maybe blame your bosses for having located their stores in farrraday cages!

Friendlygingercat · 15/05/2026 10:31

Some people simply lack the ability plan ahead. Planning is a sophisticated process which requires humans to make an imaginitive journey into the future and then look back over the route which led them there.

SusanChurchouse · 15/05/2026 10:35

To be fair my daughter does this. She doesn’t like having money in her spends account unless she’s actually buying stuff then forgets to transfer it until the last minute. She has ADHD if that mitigates it!

purplecorkheart · 15/05/2026 10:38

I have only been behind people doing this a few times and to be fair it only takes seconds. What annoys me is when people scroll through their phone screen trying to find their loyalty card. Could they not open that up while in the queue.

And if you choose a reward card you get paid for spending.

ImWearingPantaloons · 15/05/2026 10:42

Yes it’s deeply annoying.

And it almost always follows a massive faff about trying to locate a loyalty card on their phone too, completely oblivious to the queue building.

They're the main character and you're a nobody to them because everybody else is a nobody to them.

That's the crux of it.
