Angela Rayner's tax affairs

Ihateboris · 14/05/2026 08:10

I was a few days late submitting my Tax Return due to being in hospital last year and as result I was charged £100 late filing penalty.

AIBU to think that Angela Rayner should have to pay interest and penalties for underpayment of Stamp Duty. This makes me so fucking angry.

How do you know she hasn’t been fined?

Bluestofblue · 14/05/2026 08:17

It’s confusing the way it’s been reported - as if she has only just paid. Surely she paid as soon as she found out?!? If not and she only paid when she wanted to be labour leader … that would be awful

Ihateboris · 14/05/2026 08:17

Nick Ferrari just confirmed on lbc

You could have submitted to HMRC your reason for late submission and requested a refund of the fine. There is a very high chance they would have accepted it, given your hospital stay.

The trust arrangements with her son sound very complex. Her error has been the naivety in not getting specialist advice.

I tried...and they still insisted I pay.

Yes I read a couple of reports that she paid no fines or penalties.
Extraordinary when you consider how HMRC treats mere mortals who make a simple error or file their return a day late.

1dayatatime · 14/05/2026 08:21

No because she said "I set out to pay the correct amount of tax. I took reasonable care and acted in good faith, based on the expert advice I received, and HMRC has accepted this"

Except of course that is another lie in that despite being advised by her solicitors to seek tax advice, she never did.

I read it as it was being investigated if the tax was due.

Either the investigation concludes, "Yes, it was," and she's paid it, or she has paid it to make it go away regardless of the investigation's findings.

I dont believe the statement 😅

pilates · 14/05/2026 08:22

Op, I was thinking the same. They are not normally lenient on people and so I was surprised of the reporting she didn’t pay a penalty.

Erin1975 · 14/05/2026 08:23

How do you know she didn't pay interest? HMRC normally charges interest on late stamp duty payments.

Details of tax affairs like this are not published. I cannot find any source that says she did or didn't.

wobblychristmastree · 14/05/2026 08:24

Im sure she’ll be fined or maybe has been already if
its shown she was incorrect.

and you had 9 months to submit your tax return, there’s not really an excuse.

So angry as my profit that year was £18,000! What's Rayner earning?? One rule for them, and another for us plebs

Yes, thank you for that. I feel well and truly reprimanded.

What a coincidence that she's been cleared by HMRC right at the time there's a leadership battle coming on.

Well your quite happy to have a go at others maybe sort your own affairs own first in a timely manner.

And if you think you can do her job and take all the shot thrown at her then you should go for it. I actually think MPs salaries are pitiful for the work they do and that has caused a lot of problems with the trust fund Charlies being the only ones attracted to those roles.

Lord knows the Labour Party need some more talent

That doesn't say she didn't pay interest. It just says she was not fined which is understandable given the complex nature of the case

FinchiePink · 14/05/2026 08:31

We will never be privy to the full details (naturally), but there is every chance HMRC had already accepted her first, erroneous SDLT return.

I'm a tax advisor and HMRC are actually fairly reasonable, particularly when it comes to complex areas of legislation. And having dealt with trusts and SDLT (I'm a trust expert, that part I'm fine with) I can confirm that it is anything but simple, despite what the press keep saying. I hate dealing with SDLT. If I never had to look at it again I'd be very happy.

My guess is she's made the incorrect return to HMRC, HMRC have accepted it, then it came out it wasn't, and now everyone's had to do a bit of face-saving and consequently HMRC have waived penalties and interest. It wouldn't be the first time and it won't be the last. The difference here is that this has played out in public.

Amazing coincidence isn't it that she decides to announce it today on the early morning news before hmrc offices were even open, j alsoa coincidence about Farage being investigated too, spin spin spin. They must think we're stupid.

Chiachomp · 14/05/2026 08:35

Another Chartered Tax advisor and yes, can’t stand Angela Raynor but that’s a very complex area she fell foul of. Zack Polanski less so. And Richard Tice and Nadim Zahawi were just taking the Mickey!

You have absolutely no idea why I wasn't able to sort my finances out in a timely manner, so please don't assume I'm incompetent.
