AIBU to ask if you’d like to have your own bedroom?

Inspired by some comments on the bathroom thread to ask this.

Recently my DH and I moved into separate bedrooms due to his snoring, and we both love it! We feel well rested and enjoy each having our own space.

If you are in a relationship, would you want your own bedroom if you had the space?

YABU - No, I prefer to share
YANBU - Yes, I’d love to have my own room

We’re had our own rooms for years ! I’d never go back to the snores, the tossing and turning etc etc. if we’re away and stay in the same bed in a hotel I miss my private quiet bedroom!

OneShyQuail · 14/05/2026 19:35

I love sleeping next to my DP. I love feeling the weight of his arm over me and I love waking up next to him in the morning, he has this instinct where hes still half asleep but reaches over to me and pulls me in close and kisses my head before weve even woken up properly 🥹

whiteroseredrose · 14/05/2026 19:37

Yes. Separate bedrooms have saved my marriage.

We now book 2 bedroom apartments for holidays too.

OriginalPedant · 14/05/2026 19:38

I bloody love it if my husband is working away and I have the bed to myself. I wouldn’t like it every night though.

CatA27 · 14/05/2026 19:39

Absolutely not, me and my ex started to sleep separately once we had the room and it was the beginning of the end for us. I love nothing more than snuggling into my husbands arms when we go to bed and a bit of a kiss and a cuddle before sleep 💑

OneShyQuail · 14/05/2026 19:40

I dont get the seperate bathroom thing either?! Whats the deal?
I must have a very well behaved man here lol but sharing a bathroom doesnt irritate me either

ScaredButUnavoidable · 14/05/2026 19:43

Me and DH have had separate rooms for about 3 years now!

I’m chuffed about it as I got the one with the en-suite 🤣

I love having my own tidy haven that is always so tranquil and serene!! I love the constant aroma of my Yankee candles and being able to wake up to no mess and no noise! It’s my own little retreat where nobody else is allowed 🤣

And not having to share the bed is wonderful too!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 14/05/2026 19:50

I'd love my own room. 3 kids have theirs and I sometimes complain like a teen 'it's soo unfair, how come you get to have your own..'. I want a tiny room, just a bed. I don't care if it's dark or even has a window. It's just for resting and sleeping. Then separately I'd like a room that's mine, for my clothes, my personal stuff, a dressing table, and with a comfy chair for reading and chilling out. I don't think clothes belong in a bedroom, dust makes me sneeze so that influences my view. But also why have clutter and storage around where you sleep?

justasking111 · 14/05/2026 19:51

Shared a bed for 48 years. I needed a hip operation in October. Set up the spare bedroom with en suite with gadgets for recovery.

Did go back before second operation but he'd been having the dog in the bed which set off my asthma so I moved out again. I'm not going back again. I still have my clothes, dressing table in the other room. Today I was coughing. The carpet and bed are covered in dog hair and the windows are shut. I like the bedroom window open always.

Own floor with separate bedroom & bathroom.

Own floor with separate bedroom & bathroom.

Same here!!!

I love in a 3 storey house and my husband’s bedroom is on one floor, mine is on another and the children’s are on the other 🤣

A bathroom on each floor too so we all have individual bathroom facilities too!

Perfect 🤣

IwanttoWFH · 14/05/2026 21:04

We have our own rooms. It’s amazing and I’d never go back now!

Imisssleep88 · 14/05/2026 21:17

I prefer to share the bed with my partner, least then he's close enough to kick when he snores. If he sleeps in the room next door or downstairs he still wakes me up when he snores but I have get up to actually get him to stop lol. Space wise that aspect doesn't bother me as with two small children we don't get much time to ourselves or to lounge in the bedroom anyway.

MissAmbrosia · 14/05/2026 21:26

Oh no - I love cuddles!

Yerdug · 14/05/2026 21:54

I have my own room and its my sanctuary. I sleep better and am a better person to live with overall as a result. We have an amazing marriage but Sweaty Jump Sleep Snore Face isnt part of my sleep routine.
Worry not, Mumsnet, we still manage a good seeing to a few tims a week!

It sure is. Life ain’t like a Hollywood movie 😂

SummerFleurs · 14/05/2026 22:10

I would love my own room. The mismatching bedtimes, noise when he comes to bed, tossing&turning, loud breathing/snoring, smelly pillow - I agree to my DD’s sleepovers some nights just because she’s a silent sleeper!

Greypanda86 · 14/05/2026 22:31

It’s a big no from me, I love being in the same bed as my husband I really struggle to sleep alone

SnowFrogJelly · 14/05/2026 22:45

Iriseee · 14/05/2026 08:15

Not just own bedroom but own house as well. Blissful. Just this morning I was lying there in my peaceful home and thinking how wonderful it was. Love my DP too though.

Same here😁

AtBeaverGoat · 14/05/2026 22:46

Ex wife was abit of a snorer so we ended up in separate rooms, after we split I got my own house

new partner is one hell of a snorer and there is absolutely no way I could share a bed with her long term

TaraRhu · 14/05/2026 22:48

I would LOVE that. My own space. Somewhere to retreat to. No kids. No mess. Private space. Bliss. What age are you op?

FairViewRosie25 · 14/05/2026 23:01

Yes as PP sharing works for me and although he wears ear plugs I am completely unconscious when the dogs wake up at 7am 😉😉

I’m 47, been married 20+ years. Wouldn’t have dreamed of separate rooms until fairly recently, but now wish we’d done it sooner.

In addition to the snoring, DH often wakes in the middle of the night and likes to read to help him get back to sleep, which was difficult for both of us - he had insufficient light and I would wake up anyway.

But it’s also just so nice to have my own space for the first time in over 20 years.

Beware the loss of the quiet end of day chats and hugs.

This was my biggest fear. But we often visit each other to say goodnight and have chats then.
