To prefer YouTube to TV?

Dappy777 · 13/05/2026 22:58

Does anyone else find they watch YouTube far more than TV? I didn’t make a conscious decision to do so. I just noticed a while ago that I no longer watch the BBC. I switch on the TV and automatically go to YouTube. Maybe it’s to do with getting older, but I love clips of the sun rising on a beach in Hawai, or rain falling on a forest, etc. I can watch that stuff for ages. I also find a lot of YouTubers/vloggers much funnier and more entertaining than mainstream comedians.

No, are you seven? 😭 The only people I know who genuinely prefer YouTube over actual TV/movies are middle schoolers and younger.

Lifesyoungdream · 13/05/2026 23:12

Yes I watch a lot of YouTubers who restore old cottages in Ireland better than some of the programs they make for tv

This is so rude, but made me laugh.

I almost never watch tv but really enjoy Youtube. It's not as though everything on there is tween vloggers or cartoons. I watch tv programmes on it occasionally but generally enjoy travel vlogs, history programmes, podcasts, book reviews, some lifestyle vloggers of a similar age to me (mid 30's), tutorials for things like drawing/painting/procreate or whatever hobby I'm currently engaged in. I find the short-form content more enjoyable and am not fussed about keeping up with whatever's on the TV.

Most people I know nowadays watch more You Tube than tv - we’re all late 30s / early 40s

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 13/05/2026 23:17

My partner watches fishing programmes on YouTube. I think we have YouTube on more than regular TV now.

Yet I’ll bet you watch loads of TikTok?

I don’t even have live TV anymore, anything we watch is streaming. I probably watch an equal mix of YouTube, Netflix, HBO and Disney.

Davros · 13/05/2026 23:21

I’ve got an aversion to YouTube, DH was obsessed with it and was going through severe mental breakdown. I can barely look at it unless I need to know how to tighten a widget or something

GodDamnitDonut · 13/05/2026 23:24

Yes, I don’t watch tv at all but watch you tube nearly every day. I watch vlogs and videos specific to my interests. I find tv boring. I’m in my 40s.

WhySoManySocks · 13/05/2026 23:25

Mind your attention spans, people. I've seen teenagers who can't focus for more than a 2 sec TikTok.

I can't believe these days TV looks good in comparison with these scrolling apps.

This makes no sense. You can watch any genre of video on YouTube. I watch lots of old documentaries and old BBC content from their archive, various podcasts and stand up comedy. The entirety of Taskmaster and Would I Lie To You are on YouTube. There are millions of amazing things on YouTube.

Tink3rbell30 · 13/05/2026 23:38

Yes I'm currently watching Sarah from Coronation Street's teenage pregnancy storyline from 2000 on there 😂 I mainly use it to watch old TV shows.

Soooo you’re talking about actual former TV shows, documentaries, archived performances, etc. Yeah, obviously that’s not what I meant. I have Broadway bootlegs and performance clips saved on YouTube too. I’m talking about actual YouTuber content. Like fully adult people whose primary entertainment is watching a 32-year-old man scream at Fortnite beneath RGB lighting for six consecutive hours. And let’s be real, when most people say “I watch YouTube,” that is usually what they’re talking about, not “I once watched a Something Rotten! bootleg uploaded as ‘tap dancing eggs the musical.’”

I was 70 last birthday and I much prefer YouTube to "actual" TV. The quality of many of the historical YouTube playlists is far superior to anything TV has put out since the days of "Chronicle" and Magnus Magnusson.

Aside from "Only Connect" and certain favourite old movies, the TV is rarely on in this house.

Oh, I agree there is a load of dross on YouTube (but then you can say that of TV as well. BBC1 is shite these days), but buried down if you look for it there are some seriously good creators there e.g.
Jago Hazzard, Lord Hardthrasher, Cruising the Cut, Brandon Fisichella and Drachinfel to name only a few.

TheSoapyFrog · 14/05/2026 00:47

This has happened to me too recently! I listen to a lot of stories when I'm at home - usually horror related, or fake news reports involving various apocalyptic scenarios. And at night I listen to sleep stories to help me nod off. I also like videos about gardening, space, and history.

I do still watch TV, but despite all the streaming services we have, I'm finding a lot of it quite dull.

Before, I would only really use youtube for instructions on stuff like how to fix a dripping tap.

There's more to YouTuber content than that, there are loads of cooking channels like Sorted, there are people like Tom Scott/Map Men who just tell you interesting things... The list goes on. Also that sort of gaming content is thoroughly outdated, there are plenty of channels like Gameranx offering proper in depth looks at upcoming games etc.

Sartre · 14/05/2026 12:44

I don’t watch it alone but there’s a few channels I enjoy watching with DH in the evening sometimes just to unwind really. Big fan of Daily Dose of Internet, Meditations for the Anxious Mind, the guy who walks around Manchester making everyone look like a buffoon, there’s a guy we watch who makes curries in fluffy slippers… I’m not great with channel names. I also love Garron Noone (follow me I’m delicious!). Oh and the BBC Archive videos are amazing- really enjoy watching Tomorrow’s World.

But as I say, it isn’t something I do alone. I just never really got into it, ditto Vine when that was a thing and I’ve never used TikTok.

My DS loves and is about to do A Level Geography so he’s into Map Men. I liked Tom Scott’s video in the paternoster lift in the Arts Tower (can confirm it’s terrifying). He’s mega nerdy but harmless enough.

PhantomErik · 14/05/2026 14:01

Yes I love watching travel vlog channels like Steve Marsh, Walk with me Tim, Ash & Kels. Also home renovations & van life like Camper Vibe, Jacob Harrel, Ben & Emily.

I still watch a bit of BBC, Netflix etc but not daily.

Laiste · 14/05/2026 14:32

God yes i watch loads of youtube!

The creepy camping channels. The wild camping videos. The horse training videos. The oil painting restoration videos. DIY videos (doing kitchen floor) Soap crushing. Make up repair. Gel nails (japanese, no talking) product reviews, hiking in the wilderness looking for bigfoot videos, a few i watch with DD (11), and space exploration.

Actual TV these days is just cooking shows and Design Masters.

Laiste · 14/05/2026 14:33

Oh yeah and the 'straight line' bloke who walks across the country in a dead straight line come what may.

I doubt many seven-year-olds are watching the kinds of stuff I do on YouTube, which is mainly old cult TV shows that you can't find on regular streaming, serious documentaries, astronomy content, dog training videos, and creepy true stories. There's more to YouTube than annoying influencers.

HobGobblynne · 14/05/2026 14:35

Can confirm I am not seven, but do also prefer YouTube.

Loads of podcasts I listen to have filmed versions on youtube, channel 4 always put full episodes of documentaries on there etc. I don't have to worry about adverts etc.

UpDownAllAround1 · 14/05/2026 14:36

yep youtube premium for me. No adverts and so much content
