To prefer YouTube to TV?

Dappy777 · 13/05/2026 22:58

Does anyone else find they watch YouTube far more than TV? I didn’t make a conscious decision to do so. I just noticed a while ago that I no longer watch the BBC. I switch on the TV and automatically go to YouTube. Maybe it’s to do with getting older, but I love clips of the sun rising on a beach in Hawai, or rain falling on a forest, etc. I can watch that stuff for ages. I also find a lot of YouTubers/vloggers much funnier and more entertaining than mainstream comedians.

I only watch mainstream TV for football, darts & a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon to watch New Tricks, otherwise I watch YouTube. I watch all kinds of channels, everything from Narrowboats, Class 1 HGV driving, Campervan self building, travel, DIY, podcasts on anything from football to politics, cooking, product reviews & even a plasterer whose commentary on plastering is my bedtime story, his voice overs chill me out.

It is brilliant that people can create their own content, it broadens our horizons away from mainstream media which is so heavily regulated.

There is so much good drama on the BBC

10 or so years ago I would have agreed

SemperIdem · 14/05/2026 22:49

I’m quite chronically online but YouTube doesn’t feature at all.

What are you watching on YT that surpasses all over platforms?!

Are you in a retirement village?

God yes i watch loads of youtube!

The creepy camping channels. The wild camping videos. The horse training videos. The oil painting restoration videos. DIY videos (doing kitchen floor) Soap crushing. Make up repair. Gel nails (japanese, no talking) product reviews, hiking in the wilderness looking for bigfoot videos, a few i watch with DD (11), and space exploration.

Actual TV these days is just cooking shows and Design Masters.

What are the creepy camping channels?? I’m thinking Blair Witch Project…

I watch youtube or netflix. Its not random vloggers though its channels where I learn something or get motivation. I follow some home making channels. I like Healthy Elizabeth, scandish home, Jonna jinton has a lovely channel also. Quite a few others too. If you are a Christian... Faithful Legacy channel is lovelgly, also if you like the nordics that lady who lives in Svalbard, Cecilia blomdhal.

YouTube is everything and anything - you can’t just categorise it or dismiss it.

Whenever I have an evening in and go on it, I’m reminded of the brilliant Microsoft adverts from the late 90s, when the internet was in its infancy and it said “Where do you want to go to today.”

I love Jago Hazzard! Also The Behaviour Panel, Gary Eats, Greeno, and a more recent uploader with old Diagnosis Murder episodes, and more! I am on youtube most evenings because there is so little appealing on 'normal' tv. If you put thought into it, youtube has loads of decent content, and it's very easy to avoid the dross.

Let's give it a go.

binliner · 15/05/2026 06:25

I don’t watch Youtube very often apart from exercise videos.

Things I’m currently watching on TV are Amandaland, The other Bennett sister, Chesnut man (?) & can’t wait for Rivals.

DH likes watching those mechanics who fix cars, don’t get it myself.

binliner · 15/05/2026 06:28

Gary Eats

One of my colleagues watches him, again I don’t get it. He seems a nice chap but I don’t find it interesting to watch someone eating food 😆

Shatandfattered · 15/05/2026 06:35

I watch gardening programmes on youtube, diy, history, alternative news, science and other educational programmes, and many more... But yes YouTube has become my new home for TV the past year.

I love Gary. He doesn't dumb things down yet is honest, polite and upfront.

His episode eating daal is one of the funniest things I've seen.

QuintadosMalvados · 15/05/2026 06:41

whispersred.
Can't be her only fan.

What a lovely lady.

Cheesipuff · 15/05/2026 06:46

Of course YouTube is great -it’s drawing from stuff globally for a start and not just UK, and from filming produced since 1950 when cine and home movies started - to sneer at U.K. tv when it’s providing a huge amount of the content is a bit petty

Monty36 · 15/05/2026 06:46

Youtube is full of AI nonsense. You can get some useful diy content. But generally I find it awful.

DavidStopActingLikeADisgruntledPelican · 15/05/2026 06:52

Thinking about it, it’s about 50/50 in our house between YouTube and streaming services. The only normal tv we watch is probably the news occasionally and CBeebies for the toddler.

YouTube has loads of interesting content on it. We watch everything from politics related stuff to random mad shit and loads in between. I had no idea some people see it as something just for kids 👀

Love his channel! It’s one of those things that’s easy to watch while you eat your tea.

No, are you seven? 😭 The only people I know who genuinely prefer YouTube over actual TV/movies are middle schoolers and younger.

There's loads of brilliant documentaries on YouTube, just because you haven't discovered them doesn't mean there's only rubbish on there.

Oreosareawful · 15/05/2026 10:50

We're a Youtube over TV family too.

My husband likes to watch vlogs of car shows (Adam C), people buying and repairing cars (Matt Armstrong), food challenges (Beard meets Food) Auditors (DJ Audits)- We know so much about the legalities of flying a drone now! The chap who stands with a sandwich board against trans people- the people who go for him are unhinged!

I watch lots of equestrian influencers- and have met many of them in real life as I fence judge for BE. I watch Cross Stitch vloggers and have dabbled in it myself.

We watch travel vlogers- Walk with me Tim helped us to choose our family holiday last year as we loved his video so much. The kids watched it over and over as they were so excited we were going there too.

Endless entertainment.

Arlanymor · 15/05/2026 10:58

I don't follow any YouTubers - except for The New Bee Reviews - as he's a very funny guy who reviews movies. Bit ironic given that I don't often watch movies, but his content is really good fun and he's such a genuine guy. Plus he has three cats who appear from time to time... what's not to like? Oh and That Chapter.

I mainly watch it for old TV content that is no longer available via the main channels - such as Blackadder, Monty Python, lots of old Discovery Channel documentaries - you name it, really good for vintage stuff. I watched Little Shop of Horrors on YouTube last night because I was in the mood for something absurdist and easy to watch.

And maybe some people have missed this? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0q4521pg28o
