To prefer YouTube to TV?

Dappy777 · 13/05/2026 22:58

Does anyone else find they watch YouTube far more than TV? I didn’t make a conscious decision to do so. I just noticed a while ago that I no longer watch the BBC. I switch on the TV and automatically go to YouTube. Maybe it’s to do with getting older, but I love clips of the sun rising on a beach in Hawai, or rain falling on a forest, etc. I can watch that stuff for ages. I also find a lot of YouTubers/vloggers much funnier and more entertaining than mainstream comedians.

I watch quite a bit of Youtube, it's a great selection and you can avoid the DEI rubbish that TV insist on. Haven't watched much TV for twenty years and haven't even had a telly for at least a decade.

nomas · 14/05/2026 14:38

YANBU, OP. After BBC, YouTube is the most viewed service.

My remote has a YouTube button, I now often just go straight to that.

Nihongo · 14/05/2026 14:38

Yes, I only watch a mixture of youtube and streaming platforms so I can pick and choose shows to watch complete with ad blocker, that way I don’t to sit through constant ads on normal tv.

There’s loads of good documentaries and old shows on there.

UpDownAllAround1 · 14/05/2026 14:36

yep youtube premium for me. No adverts and so much content

I use Brave and don't get any adverts.

ThisSpoonyCrab · 14/05/2026 14:39

Most of my friends prefer YouTube now as well. Especially travel stuff!

And no, we aren't seven

No, are you seven? 😭 The only people I know who genuinely prefer YouTube over actual TV/movies are middle schoolers and younger.

The stats disagree with you, even 55+ are switching to YouTube.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/05/2026 14:41

You are allowed to have your own likes and dislikes, @Dappy777 - I don’t judge people for making a choice that doesn’t harm anyone else. We are all different and make different choices - I don’t see anything contentious about that.

I'm almost 40, don't have a TV licence and exclusively watch either YouTube or one form of subscription service or another.

Broadcast TV has become garbage and the BBC in particular is a long long way away from their motto of "Inform, Educate, Entertain"

With YouTube I can do all 3 of those without paying some national company to curate what I watch.

CheeseWisely · 14/05/2026 14:45

I’ve genuinely never watched anything on YouTube aside from instructional videos if I need to build / clean / repair something I’m not sure how to. We’ve got the app on the TV, it would just never occur to me to open it.

OonaStubbs · 14/05/2026 14:48

Modern TV is crap. Youtube is much better, you can find just about anything on there.

Realvintagewrinkles · 14/05/2026 14:49

WhySoManySocks · 13/05/2026 23:25

Mind your attention spans, people. I've seen teenagers who can't focus for more than a 2 sec TikTok.

I can't believe these days TV looks good in comparison with these scrolling apps.

I’m currently watching the book club podcast, a whole hour and twenty minutes long!!! So I think we’re all good.

Isobel201 · 14/05/2026 14:50

Yeah, I watch youtube more than actual TV these days - I don't watch the news and 0 live TV channels. I watch films on prime or netflix

LeaderBee · 14/05/2026 14:53

pinck · 14/05/2026 00:20

Soooo you’re talking about actual former TV shows, documentaries, archived performances, etc. Yeah, obviously that’s not what I meant. I have Broadway bootlegs and performance clips saved on YouTube too. I’m talking about actual YouTuber content. Like fully adult people whose primary entertainment is watching a 32-year-old man scream at Fortnite beneath RGB lighting for six consecutive hours. And let’s be real, when most people say “I watch YouTube,” that is usually what they’re talking about, not “I once watched a Something Rotten! bootleg uploaded as ‘tap dancing eggs the musical.’”

Bullshit.

I watch:

  • Tasting history with Max miller which is a cross between a cooking and history show
  • Mark Felton Productions, a world war 2 historian
  • The Critical drinker - amongst other film reviewers and critics.
  • XKCD: What if, and Physics girl - both Physics/science communicators.

I do watch lets plays and video game content too, but your view of what people are watching is narrow -minded and outdated.

I’m in my 60s and definitely prefer YouTube to tv, especially broadcast tv. I’ll take my chances with my attention span.

IHateEmptyPockets · 14/05/2026 14:57

Yep we watch more YouTube as well. Shout out for Wildbeare for anyone who likes wild camping and hiking - she’s superb

Max Miller is really good, I made his Parthian Chicken which was nice but a bit odd which isn't surprising for a 1500 year old recipe. Have you tried The Townsends. Early US settler food most of which is quite British/Irish, I'm thinking of making one the clay ovens they show you how to build this summer.

You should try it. Any hobby or interest you have you can find you tube videos relating to it.

DS (military history nerd) watches history documentaries and theme park reviews, DD watches art shows and how to draw tutorials, I watch a lot of book tube and DH watches electric car reviews and other car shows. We all watch WhamBam Tesla cam and travel blogs and me and DH make ourselves hungry in the evening watching Harrison Webb review restaurants and dream about eating out without fussy children 😀

OonaStubbs · 14/05/2026 15:03

Why is it that Youtube channels can be far more interesting than "proper TV" despite having (at a generous estimate) a hundredth of the budget? How can the BBC justify their multi-billion pound budget when they put out so much crap?

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/05/2026 15:06

I watch YouTube quite a bit and barely watch tv. There’s rarely anything I actually want to watch on tv, whereas I can find things I am interested in on YouTube any time I look.

zingally · 14/05/2026 15:14

Yep!

We moved into our house 18 months ago, and there was no tv aerial. It wasn't high up the list of things to sort, and still isn't to this day. If there's something particular we want, we use catch-up services, and you can watch things live on iPlayer.
I watch a lot of YouTube. I love the variety. There's a lot of interesting documentaries and people doing all sorts of interesting things. I've learnt about things I'd never seen on traditional tv.

fantam · 14/05/2026 15:16

Another non TV watcher. I have my subscribed channels and love them. Of course the algorithm will suggest others, but usually of a similar nature, which is fun to either follow or discard.

The only thing that bothers me about YT is the preponderance of quick clips, but they are easy to avoid, tempting sometimes (which is the point I suppose), but not mandatory.

Travel, (Phil Carr especially), medical stuff, how to fix the washing machine/vacuum cleaner, unblock the loo etc. ha ha, aviation and watching planes take off and land, and lots of other things. Far far better than any TV for me.

Yes I have watched the townsends before.

Pro tip: Only try making the baked onions if there's nobody else in the house.

they're a bit farty.

Rainbow1235 · 14/05/2026 16:06

U tube is fab . I’ve watched some great series on there and love the cleaning shows etc

Nopenott0day · 14/05/2026 17:59

Tods workshop amour Vs arrows series is fantastic. For so long TV has been using cheap aluminium butted mail and naff quality plate. It's great for some people to actually care and show it.

I'm 53, partner 64 and we watch much more YouTube than TV. The algorithm has worked out what we like and we subscribe so no ads.
