To prefer YouTube to TV?

Does anyone else find they watch YouTube far more than TV? I didn’t make a conscious decision to do so. I just noticed a while ago that I no longer watch the BBC. I switch on the TV and automatically go to YouTube. Maybe it’s to do with getting older, but I love clips of the sun rising on a beach in Hawai, or rain falling on a forest, etc. I can watch that stuff for ages. I also find a lot of YouTubers/vloggers much funnier and more entertaining than mainstream comedians.

youtube is not only for doom scrolling!!

Lots of old programs, comedy clips, music exercise classes, you can learn foreign languages etc

fourquenelles · 14/05/2026 18:16

70 year old here and my guilty pleasure is watching studio apartment tours the smaller the better (preferably in New York and Paris), Rewilding Jude in his Scottish cottage and film reaction channels especially Reel Review and Badd Medicine all middle aged girl dads. I rarely watch terrestrial telly these days.

No, are you seven? 😭 The only people I know who genuinely prefer YouTube over actual TV/movies are middle schoolers and younger.

YouTube is so much more than people like you think.

There is so much quality content. I pay for the premium non-advert tier. We probably watch it as much as normal TV and follow quite a few people.

It's not all just short clips of people falling down holes and people setting light to their farts.

To be fair I used to think the same until I did a premium trial. Without the adverts every few minutes it opens everything up.

The stats disagree with you, even 55+ are switching to YouTube.

58 year old here 🙋🏻‍♀️ and pretty much all I watch is YouTube, I watch travel vlogs, hotel reviews, (Hannah Ricketts is my favourite) true crime documentaries, air crash investigations, paranormal and ghost programmes, home design and gardening, lifestyle vlogs, history, the list is endless, my latest interest are the programmes on skyscrapers across the world which are leaning or sinking, it’s so interesting and something you just don’t find on normal tv, I pay for premium and it’s worth every penny, love YouTube.

Yep we watch more YouTube as well. Shout out for Wildbeare for anyone who likes wild camping and hiking - she’s superb

Haha. Wildbeare is fantastic.

Take a look at Itchy Boots and Joe Ryan, if you like that sort of travel / adventure stuff.

Also Outdoor Boys, although he has stopped now I think, but there's still 100s hours of content.

I watch Hannah too! I like that she’s honest and doesn’t give just give glowing reviews.

I’ve resisted paying for Premium so far but the ads are getting a lot now (4 ads per breakI remember when it was a maximum of 2).

QuintadosMalvados · 14/05/2026 18:33

Classic British Telly on YouTube is full of classic old programmes.
As is Classic British TV. Forgotten British TV.

She’s fab isn’t she, she always makes me laugh as she’s very self deprecating.

With premium it’s more than just not having adverts, you can also have YouTube playing in the corner of your screen whilst you are mumsnetting for example and YouTube music as well, I’ve downloaded so many albums, plus downloading the content I watch so I can catch up when offline which I did when I went on a cruise, if you use all of the services I think it’s pretty good value.

Yes I love watching travel vlog channels like Steve Marsh, Walk with me Tim, Ash & Kels. Also home renovations & van life like Camper Vibe, Jacob Harrel, Ben & Emily.

I still watch a bit of BBC, Netflix etc but not daily.

Love all these and Visit with Rich and Helen, fraser at sea and a few others. Moat of the youtubers I watch are at least 50+ and often 65+

fourquenelles · 14/05/2026 18:52

Another one with a lot of love for Hannah Ricketts. In fact she has helped me decide which posh hotel I stay in for my 80th.

UniquePinkSwan · 14/05/2026 19:19

Nearly 50 and I have premium. It’s way better than tv. Loads of interesting content on it now for all ages.

Oh, I agree there is a load of dross on YouTube (but then you can say that of TV as well. BBC1 is shite these days), but buried down if you look for it there are some seriously good creators there e.g.
Jago Hazzard, Lord Hardthrasher, Cruising the Cut, Brandon Fisichella and Drachinfel to name only a few.

I love Jago Hazzard! Also The Behaviour Panel, Gary Eats, Greeno, and a more recent uploader with old Diagnosis Murder episodes, and more! I am on youtube most evenings because there is so little appealing on 'normal' tv. If you put thought into it, youtube has loads of decent content, and it's very easy to avoid the dross.

PuttyTat · 14/05/2026 20:01

Do people seriously still watch the BBC???

CheeseWisely · 14/05/2026 21:01

AnotherEmilee · 14/05/2026 14:59

You should try it. Any hobby or interest you have you can find you tube videos relating to it.

DS (military history nerd) watches history documentaries and theme park reviews, DD watches art shows and how to draw tutorials, I watch a lot of book tube and DH watches electric car reviews and other car shows. We all watch WhamBam Tesla cam and travel blogs and me and DH make ourselves hungry in the evening watching Harrison Webb review restaurants and dream about eating out without fussy children 😀

Thanks, I might. I guess it’s like anything, I listen to millions of podcasts and my friend has never listened to one despite my recommending those that suit her interests. Funnily enough one of them is Dish, that it turns out she watches on YouTube but I never have (I listen to podcasts because I have more time to listen when doing something else than to sit down and watch).

You don’t know until you dive in.

Less and less but there are still some gems on there. Little Prophets recently, and the David Attenborough documentary marking his birthday, and then Secret Garden which I think is his most recent series.

RACanGoGetFucked · 14/05/2026 22:05

We watch YouTube more too, I’m 46 and dh is 50 and most of my friends also mainly watch a lot of YouTube, my 90 year old neighbour watches a lot history content on there.

My dd is is early 20s and there’s a few people we all love to watch together.

clearlyy · 14/05/2026 22:12

YANBU I only watch YouTube! DP and I watch channel 4 together for the comedy stuff but really I only watch YouTube. I’m watching something on the Incas right now. I like my 6 hour video game retrospectives and history documentaries.

Edited

I use Brave browser (free) to watch and it blocks video adverts as well as letting you lets you lock your phone screen and still play audio.

I cast from my phone to my smart tv if we’re watching in the tv.

ComedyGuns · 14/05/2026 22:15

I tend to watch YouTube more and I haven’t watched TV for a couple of years. My DH likes dystopian sci Fi type series which he can find in abundance, but watches on his laptop as I don’t like them.

The last series I tried to get into was Vladimir, but I kept getting distracted by other things and never got past the first episode.

I tend to read newspaper articles on my phone or watch YouTube, Instagram and occasionally TikTok. What often happens is an article will link to a YouTube or TikTok clip and I go from there.

Not at all. I'm late 40s and I know exactly what OP means. Podcasts are entertainment these days and most of them are doing exactly what traditional TV isn't. So I'll watch these long-form interviews, classic programmes, or music videos. I'll watch normal telly in the evening with my husband but when he goes up to bed (he has an earlier start than me AND I work from home), the TV goes off, my tablet goes on and I'm all set. Pretty sure YouTube is the No.2 global media brand behind Netflix.

PollyBell · 14/05/2026 22:32

We are all adults at home and we all prefer youtube over tv these days, and there is actual tv shows on there and shock horror not all youtube creators are young themselves, not that it matters we watch heaps of variety

Chocolattcoffeecup · 14/05/2026 22:34

I used to watch a lot of reviews and vlogs on YouTube. I like fitness and some true crime videos.

SnowFrogJelly · 14/05/2026 22:34

Laiste · 14/05/2026 14:32

God yes i watch loads of youtube!

The creepy camping channels. The wild camping videos. The horse training videos. The oil painting restoration videos. DIY videos (doing kitchen floor) Soap crushing. Make up repair. Gel nails (japanese, no talking) product reviews, hiking in the wilderness looking for bigfoot videos, a few i watch with DD (11), and space exploration.

Actual TV these days is just cooking shows and Design Masters.

If you actually watched actual tv you would realise there is far more on than cooking shows and it’s all way more interesting than creepy camping 🙄

You Tube for crochet or sewing tutorials. Or when I worked how to do most IT repairs.
