How much would you guess I earn?

I took redundancy from a very corporate job a few years ago. Very respectable job title with a big company.

I decided to have a go at home dog boarding. So I look after dogs in my home for people who don’t like kennels. I also do a bit of doggie day care. It’s all just in my house.

It obviously doesn’t carry the same respect that my corporate job did! You don’t need any qualifications.

If you had to guess, what would you think I earn a month?

I say, good for you. Much nicer than working in an office and the company is better! Enjoy

Whatdoyouthinktothis · 13/05/2026 12:01

100k plus a year ?

Beatriz85 · 13/05/2026 12:04

Well done OP! You dint actually work any hours if you do what you enjoy 😉

FruAashild · 13/05/2026 12:17

So you're earning about £50kpa? Tp put that in context that's more than a lot of vets!

DeathBanana · 13/05/2026 12:23

Honest open conversations about earning potential is really important!

also, as an aside, it says so much about our society that dogminders can earn so much more than childminders.

DeathBanana · 13/05/2026 12:25

Also, I woudl assume that the OP is responsible and reliable hence long term regular clients.

I’ve used a few dog walkers over the years and each and every one was flakey and I’m not paying someone I can’t trust. So like all things there are those performing well and being compensated accordingly and those taking the piss who probably are not

80smonster · 13/05/2026 12:48

Are any cat sitters able to confirm if that too is a boom industry?

Decacaffeinatednow · 13/05/2026 13:04

@purpleme12
Less than an hour.

If they’re all walked by 9am and then you loll about until you feed them at 3, what are the poor dogs doing in between?
Do you really only walk them once a day? I hope your clients don’t find out!

Possibly? Although I think dogs are the boom industry in the UK £££.

BeardySchnauzer · 13/05/2026 13:53

My friend uses a cat sitter but they only go in once a day so it can’t be as lucrative I would have thought

Oh that’s a shame. I’d love to know what it is. Is it the sort of thing that could be ruined if anyone in the country did it or are you worried local people might compete?

Anyone in the country as it’s online. I’m sorry 😭

I usually have about 7 a day, which will be a mix of day care and boarding. On a quiet day 2/3. On a busy day 10/12.

Do you provide all the food for them? Or is that extra?

Agree. No idea why some people have been arsey about it. No one is stopping anyone from setting up a similar business if they have the facilities.

WeatherOrNothing · 13/05/2026 14:53

Good for you op. A lot of spiteful replies here, cant understand why? Not like op is stopping anyone from doing it too.

usernamemustnotcontainspecialcharacters · 13/05/2026 14:54

Don’t care.

House doesn’t smell really! I keep it clean. I make £4000 a month usually, but summer peaks at £5000. I think that’s pretty good given that I have no boss! I am done waking them by 9am. Then I don’t have to do anything till their afternoon feed at 3pm. I’m free to sit in the garden and chill. I love it!

Don't you walk them??

Eta = if by waking you mean walking by 9am ok. Only 1 walk a day?

Bluedenimdoglover · 13/05/2026 15:17

You could say whatever figure comes into.tour head, anyway. We wouldn't know if we guessed correctly or not

Dogladyloveswine · 13/05/2026 15:38

WhosThatGirI · 13/05/2026 14:26

Do you provide all the food for them? Or is that extra?

Everyone provides their own food. Means they are less likely to get upset tummy, as they aren't changing diet, but it makes business sense for me, as my profits are larger.

Thank you! I do think we should be more transparent about things like this. There are ways to make a good wage, without being in the rat race. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to get out, especially if you're older and would like something less fast paced, or even to supplement retirement.

Do you walk them all together?

Friendlygingercat · 13/05/2026 15:46

People who are negative about self employment are probably very jealous of the ability to be your own boss and not have some micromanaging oik telling you what to do. The OP has to change accordingly bearing in mind there is no sick or holiday pay. My only caveat is that miserable and snitching neighbours can inform the LA about home run businesses if they impact in any way, including noise, smell and parking issues. The safest businesses are run online and kept strictly private from prying eyes.
