Supermarket meat

Friends inviting us around for BBQ.

I don't eat supermarket meat, do I just bring our own stuff?

Well you either eat their meat or you take your own, it's up to you.

TheyGrewUp · 12/05/2026 12:44

No, you accept what you are given with good grace, or say you are a vegetarian in advance.

emuloc · 12/05/2026 12:44

Just eat whatever vegetable option then, that is what I would do, if I did not want to eat their meat.

Getmeacoffeenow · 12/05/2026 12:45

Could you go veggie for the day instead? Say you’re cutting down on meal altogether.

coulditbeme2323 · 12/05/2026 12:45

The invite says no need to bring anything - but I might - I mean it can't hurt.

You can't take your own meat to cook on their BBQ without looking very rude, unless they've asked for contributions and you're going to share.

But even then, they'll notice if you don't eat any of theirs.

SJM1988 · 12/05/2026 12:47

But if you take your own, how do you know it won't get mixed with everything together. Can you really tell the difference when they are cooked and on a plate next to each other.

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 12/05/2026 12:48

You decline the invite.

emuloc · 12/05/2026 12:50

That is true, someone else could end up with your organic, farm shop pork chop, once it is all thrown together on the barbecue OP.

I could buy things that are unlikely to be there.

OP dont be weird....either go and eat the meat or politely decline

MyCatLooksHappy · 12/05/2026 12:53

Can’t see any way to take your own meat and expect them to cook it, without looking like you don’t like the food they’re going to provide. I’d expect them to be a bit offended. Telling them in advance that you’re cutting down on meet and will bring your own veggie food would be less likely to offend

emuloc · 12/05/2026 12:53

Of course. Better still, ask for your premium meat to be cooked first, so that it is not tainted by that supermarket meat, huh?

HalzTangz · 12/05/2026 12:54

Maybe decline the invite, supermarket meat won't kill you to eat just for one day

Skippp · 12/05/2026 12:55

I have a family member who has similar ideas over supermarket meat and they just say that they’re veggie, or having a veggie week etc and bring halloumi, mushrooms and aubergine.

I am not that weird haha! I just don't like to eat it!

How close are you to these friends? Because my friends would understand that I have my specific quirks. You can say that you are only eating corn fed blah blah blah or organic blah blah blah because of some health issue. As long as you’re not coming across snooty I think it’s fine

And it really isn't snooty!

Fair enough, as posters have suggested, just go for the vegetable option. I would not want to offend the host.

StressyMcStressFace · 12/05/2026 12:58

This is Peak Mumsnet if true! If you're not careful OP you'll "out" yourself as a Mumsnetter at the barbecue!

JC89 · 12/05/2026 12:58

Probably best to go veggie? It's a bit more diplomatic than saying their supermarket meat isn't good enough! And tell them in advance so they're not overcatering.

IglesiasPiggl · 12/05/2026 12:59

I'd say this is a time to either eat the meat provided or stick to the bread and salads. Bring loads of crisps and crudités as extras, but they have specifically said not to bring anything for the BBQ.

bugalugs45 · 12/05/2026 13:00

What’s your reasoning ?
My friend only eats organic and British meat , so for these reasons goes ‘veggie’ when eating out majority of the time

swqa · 12/05/2026 13:01

Why are you asking us instead of the friends who invited you?

Bit odd?

Probably a bad experience, the smell and look of supermarket meat just turns my stomach.
