Friends inviting us around for BBQ.

I don't eat supermarket meat, do I just bring our own stuff?

Have you known this friend long?

I pretty much know of my close friends likes and dislikes and wouldn't be bothered at all if they wanted to bring their own meat/food, I'd be more upset knowing you didn't/wasnt enjoying the event. Just make sure you're loitering by the BBQ while it's cooking or trust your friend to keep it separate

No - if it was a close friend they would know.

It's a friend from hobby of one of my children.

Ahh just tell her you're veggie then to save pissing the woman about with separate cooking.

I'm not!

Then how do you know about the smell, texture and water content.

I buy meat from Waitrose, Tesco, Saibsburys and it isn't like that.

Manyleaves · 12/05/2026 13:29

I really.douby that by the time it's been marinaded and barbequed you'd be able to tell the difference. You're not going to see any water etc if you aren't cooking.

You can't go and tell your hosts that their food isn't good enough so you've bought somethign superior.

Either go with am open mind, try a bit and don't have more if it's really that bad or tell them you need vegetarian (and offer to take that) or don't go.

NellieJean · 12/05/2026 13:30

Waitrose, a supermarket, sells Duchy Organic meat, is that safe to eat?

It's not about being safe, it's just a quirk of mine

Has she said that she is buying from a supermarket or are you making assumptions?

Assumptions, and I am obviously not going to ask!

I think it is inevitable that the host will take it as a judgement that the food that they have provided is poor quality and not good enough for you.

Most people would take it as a slight.

I would probably go for the veggie option.

Newnamesarehard · 12/05/2026 13:38

What would you take? And would it be enough for only you?

If it's just for you, no chance, that is so rude

If it's taken to share and you don't mind missing out if you miss your food, then YANBU

I never eat at BBQs because I can't eat food I haven't prepared myself. No ones ever minded and I've never not been reinvited, but everyone who knows me knows what I'm like!

Take a sandwich.

If I took a sandwich I would look insane!

I was thinking of taking a few smoked lamb shoulders for everybody.

Offer to buy all the meat as they are hosting and providing everything else

Not if they know you well enough!

But taking some lamb sounds fine, if it's for sharing I'm sure they won't mind at all

Buuuut, for my own curious mind, what you gonna do if they don't cook it?

Lamb is expensive, you could take tofu or chicken skewers kinda thing.

Is it a basic burger and hot dog BBQ normally?

I am thinking lamb shoulders are big and they take lots of hours of smoking - so I would do at ours and there would be enough for everybody if I done 3.

How do you know they’ll be serving supermarket meat anyway? They might buy from their local butcher.

Op I’d say vegetarian options or don’t go. Giving them more to think about isn’t fair

I buy meat from Lidl and Aldi and it's not like that!

StarDolphins · 12/05/2026 13:54

Not a meaningful contribution but this reminded me of my friends BBQ. She told us to just bring our own food/whatever we’re eating. I took some lovely butchers burgers/steak and she took it off me, put it in her fridge and gave me an Iceland minted lamb burger🤮

I could buy things that are unlikely to be there.

Like what?
