The head teacher of local primary has "disappeared" and bit been seen the last couple of months. Staff are seemingly unaware of the reasons why (or unable to speak about it)
Deputy has been acting head ...

What kind of reasons would there be for this?

Mental health problems?

BareBelliedSneetch · 08/05/2026 13:28

All sorts of private reasons that parents have no right to know.

you do have a right to know that the school is still being run adequately, and actions are being taken to ensure proper cover is in place.

Dearg · 08/05/2026 13:28

Illness - including Mental Health issues; family issues; caring for a relative.

My sister was a Head and took a leave of absence when our mum was dying.

Many innocent reasons, which are not the parents’ business

BrucesTooth · 08/05/2026 13:29

A family member had died or is ill, she is ill, she won the lottery, she is having an affair with the leader of the council and they've all found out, she been abducted, she's run off to the circus..
I mean, because she needs to step away. She will then either leave permanently or come back. Like a human would.

ArchieStar · 08/05/2026 13:29

A big dose of nonya I guess.

aka nonya business.

MaryBeardsShoes · 08/05/2026 13:29

I work in a school and the head was sent to another school in the trust for a whole term to help them turn things around. I think parents should have been informed though!

mumofoneAloneandwell · 08/05/2026 13:30

Illness likely - i'm going physical 👀

Impaled himself whilst partying in ibiza?

Partying it up with a leader from the council that theyre also having an affair with!

WongLynchFellini · 08/05/2026 13:30

It could be anything at all but when it happened at my school, he had been accused (and was subsequently convicted of sexually assaulting boys at the last school he had worked at.

SillySeal · 08/05/2026 13:30

There could be many reasons. The head could be sick, having family issues, taken leave for mental health problems or there could be a LADO investigation.

Its too easy to speculate and I am not sure there would be even a way to find out or that its anyone's business. Hopefully the deputy is doing a great job in the interim.

TotallyAddictedToCoffee · 08/05/2026 13:31

does the schools name begin with N* M**?

SandwichSuperstar · 08/05/2026 13:31

Oh not this again 🙄

The other week it was a class teacher.

How on God's earth would anyone here know why they've 'disappeared'?

MNetters had no clue on the last thread and they'll have no clue on this one either.

tiramisugelato · 08/05/2026 13:32

The headmaster at the school I used to attend recently “vanished” and was later sacked for gross misconduct and misuse of funds 🤷‍♀️

It could be anything though and is just as likely to be because she’s unwell or something.

Obviously parents don’t need to know specific but they should know who is in charge. If a head has to take a leave of absence the parents should be told there will be a change.

HelenaWilson · 08/05/2026 13:32

What kind of reasons would there be for this?

Reasons that the head would like to keep private and not be the subject of school gate chat, I expect.

It might concern a member of his/her family and be none of your business.

Mcdhotchoc · 08/05/2026 13:32

Loads of reasons
I'll health
Looking after terminally I'll parent
Any reason that any one would be on long term leave.
As long as the school is being run properly by deputy head/governors will have oversight its hardly a problem.

Nonsense10 · 08/05/2026 13:32

Staff will have been given a reason. They won't tell you and rightly so. Stop being nosy.

Holdinguphalfthesky · 08/05/2026 13:33

Illness, either mental or physical. None of anyone else’s business.

Illness or bereavement of a family member- also no-one else’s business.

Other personal issue which means they need a leave of absence.

Secondment elsewhere is unlikely because that isn’t private and personal so parents could be informed.

Basically, if school staff aren’t sharing, it’s a private matter and you should MYOB.

AnotherNC22 · 08/05/2026 13:33

Has the school recently been taken over by an academy? In a school i know, when this happened it was because the ceo of the academy basically bullied the school head to the point she went on sick leave and then agreed an exit package. The academy ceo then brought in a new head.

Member984815 · 08/05/2026 13:33

Whatever the reasons it's private . We are not entitled to know everything

VillageMilton · 08/05/2026 13:34

Sick to death of gossiping parents?

They know who is in charge. A member of staff is acting head. They’re not running headteacher-less. OP said above there is an acting head.

They do know who's in charge?

WearyAuldWumman · 08/05/2026 13:35

She might be ill. A spouse or a parent might be ill. She might have suffered a significant bereavement.

Staff probably do know, but the only answer that you can give when a nosey child or parent asks is "I don't know."

It’s really none of your business.

I had time off due to a mental health crisis caused by my rape. That isn’t anyone else’s business.
