The head teacher of local primary has "disappeared" and bit been seen the last couple of months. Staff are seemingly unaware of the reasons why (or unable to speak about it)
Deputy has been acting head ...

What kind of reasons would there be for this?

Id imagine health

Possibly a section under mental health

It itb we anything criminal it would be everywhere...just mind your own business

TicklishMintDuck · 08/05/2026 17:12

How is it any of your business? There are any number of reasons that people can be absent from work, eg. health, bereavement, accident.

bangalanguk · 08/05/2026 17:14

It's none of your business. The staff do know why but they are not sharing that information with parents because it's confidential.

Mh67 · 08/05/2026 17:17

Sickness, Illness, bereavement, disciplinary. Secondment.

Primary I was previously governor at had head mysteriously disappear, along with another tecaher. Turned out to be sick leave for mental health needs after their affair with each other was discovered.
Private school in our county had headteacher suddenly disappear and no one would say why, went on for months. Rumours were an affair with staff member.
Last month a court report appeared in the press "A former head teacher at a private school has denied misusing school funds to buy cricket tickets and to pay parking fines."
I believe the affair rumour in that case may have come from the fact that the former headmaster appeared in court in stereotypically female clothing, with longer curled hair than he had in the initial press report photos when the news finally broke. I wonder if someone saw him going into his house on the site in those clothes and thought it was a woman that wasn't his wife!

😂 I am a member of staff

So what?

The reason is absolutely none of your bloody business. All you need to know is that she's not working at the moment. Speculating like this on Mumsnet about it and gleefully trying to get people to come up with ideas for reasons someone might be having a very difficult time that stops them from working is really unpleasant of you.

Has the school recently been taken over by an academy? In a school i know, when this happened it was because the ceo of the academy basically bullied the school head to the point she went on sick leave and then agreed an exit package. The academy ceo then brought in a new head.

Not the only one by a long, long way.

LetMeGoogleThat · 08/05/2026 17:36

Could be any number of reasons, and none of them are your business.

cinnamontroll · 08/05/2026 17:37

This exact situation happened when my own DD was at primary school. Head had been gone for months, deputy head was now acting as head. No mention to parents etc, but eventually was told privately by the deputy head (I was on the pta at the time) that she was battling breast cancer .
She was gone for over a year, then came back, cancer free to resume her role!

MaryBeardsShoes · 08/05/2026 13:32

Obviously parents don’t need to know specific but they should know who is in charge. If a head has to take a leave of absence the parents should be told there will be a change.

And they know that the deputy is acting as head for the time being

Reallyneedsaholiday · 08/05/2026 17:38

They were obviously an undercover agent or maybe a call girl on the run from the mob 🙄

allthingsinmoderation · 08/05/2026 17:44

There could be any number of reasons.
Has there been any explanation as to the heads long term absence at all?
Sick leave,unpaid leave,a sabatical?

StickChildNumberTwo · 08/05/2026 17:47

When it happened at my kids school everyone assumed stress. Didn't take long for the rumours to start that although not accurate in every detail turned out to be true in outline, that he'd been suspended due to financial fraud. Ended up in court so it's now a matter of public record.

ToffeeCrabApple · 08/05/2026 17:49

Ime when someone is ill (physically or mentally) someone usually just says its that. They are unwell.

If people are being very hush hush and no one is saying anything at all there's a reason they don't want to say and that usually means its a bit salacious or embarrassing or something very sensitive/personal like a bereavement. Alternatively its a management cock up of some sort - schools never admit to these unless forced to.

TotallyAddictedToCoffee · 08/05/2026 13:31

does the schools name begin with N* M**?

Was going to say the same thing?

Not your business either way.

HelenaWilson · 08/05/2026 17:59

But yanbu to wonder. A lot if not most people would.

Wondering is one thing. Gossiping and speculating publicly is something else and very unpleasant for the head and his/her family if they hear of it.

Nothing to gossip about I shouldn't think.

I would suspect finally tipped over the edge by crappy parents, OFSTED or other personal reasons.

Probably speaks for itself then. Likely trying to get away from gossipy, unprofessional staff.

Hollowvoice · 08/05/2026 18:14

Honestly! The HT could have "disappeared" for any of the same reasons anyone could "disappear" from any job.
It's no one else's business what the precise reasons are, everyone knows the DHT is now in charge and what is the point in speculation?

Allrightonthenight1 · 08/05/2026 18:22

It's none of your business. Do you ask at the doctors, the supermarket, the bank? I thought not.

slackademic · 08/05/2026 18:24

Nonsense10 · 08/05/2026 13:32

Staff will have been given a reason. They won't tell you and rightly so. Stop being nosy.

I can stay from personal experience that isn't the case - I'm sure there are cases where the reason is known but in general I wouldn't assume that any of the staff know anything - the absent member of staff has a right to have their private life kept private. In rare, uncertain and unprecedented situations it's no surprise that the school might not know exactly how a situation is going to develop or work out so they might have to delay making any decisions or announcements until it's clear what is going on.

Well, with staff like you they’ve already got enough issues. You intentionally posted that like you’re a member of the community. Goady post-let’s hope the rest of the staff are more supportive.

TheKitchenLady · 08/05/2026 18:58

Imagine you were off work for personal reasons and all your clients were told why, by your employer or your colleagues. You'd be up in arms - and rightly so - because your confidentiality had been breached. This is what you seem to be expecting the school or its staff to do.

BreatheAndFocus · 08/05/2026 19:00

Nasty, OP. I suggest you upload all of your medical records and those of your close family so we can all have a good look. No? Then keep your nose out of other people’s private business and try to get some empathy.
