What's the most ripped off you have ever felt?

Now I don't mean something that was expensive but you really enjoyed, but where you felt ripped off.

I'll start.

26 euros for two Sprite's in Paris.

And this was circa 2014.

£9 for a small (330ml) bottle of fruit cider at an open air Tom Jones gig about 10 years ago. Had to queue for ages first and to add insult to injury, the drinks hadn’t even been refrigerated and the bar had run out of ice.

£9.50 for a glass of wine in a posh Scottish hotel. Doesn’t sound too bad now, but it was twenty years ago.

Similarly, I paid £16 for a small glass of house wine and a diet coke in a hotel bar in Leeds 20 years ago. I don't drink so I was shocked at how much they charged for wine.

I was having a 6-session beauty treatment course, and during my 5th session she told me she’d honour an additional 3 sessions at the same reduced rate of £50 per session that I’d already been paying.

However, when I came back for my 6th session, she seemed to have completely forgotten saying that and told me any further sessions would now be £100 each instead. Needless to say, I didn’t go back after that, cheeky so-and-so!

Well I’ve looked at these posts, crunched the numbers and here are my recommendations:
Don’t keep a pet
Don’t t go out for drinks- a tin of beer in a brown paper bag in the park is an acceptable substitute
Don’t bother with gigs - just use Spotify
Avoid anyone who tries to upsell - make up counters, hairdressers especially dangerous

And avoid taking taxis, especially abroad.

...

It was a light hearted comment, what's with the rudeness?

Oh, ffs, lighten up. Hardly rude. More of a vague comment on how it wasn't a very good quip.

Everytime I pay £300 a month council tax

Lairymary · 07/05/2026 15:17

I went to a gig about 20 years ago and spent 50quid on a band hoody, which still smarts, but i just had to have it. My friends were incredulous. I have no idea how much they would be these days.

Amberlynnswashcloth · 07/05/2026 15:17

The fairground with DC. £5 to toss a couple of bean bags at a hole and then that was it. Over in seconds. No consolation prize - not even a sticker or lollipop. DC stood there a bit stunned as this woman just reset the bean bags and said "thanks, bye!"

What a rip off!

EnglishBreakfastTea1 · 07/05/2026 15:17

A couple of years ago DD and I “popped” into a pub in Cheapside City of London for Sunday dinner only to find it was £27 each and consisted of two bits of meat, a couple of carrots, a couple of potatoes and a tiny pudding. I’m still annoyed.

London is a very expensive place, which is part of the reason I moved away.

LoyalMember · 07/05/2026 15:18

The £7 Drop Off Fee on a taxi fare to Glasgow Airport, which I believe is the highest of its kind in the UK. It's not the Taxi Co's fault, it's pure profiteering from the Airport owners, and unadulterated greed.

£55k to renew the lease on my flat before selling. When buying the flat, I could have extended the lease for £5k, not only did I not have that extra money at the time, but I was young and didn't understand about leasehold flats.

By the time I had the cash, the lease was under 75 years, so the marriage value came into play.

Massive lesson learnt!

SunnyRedSnail · 07/05/2026 15:21

I fell for one of those diet scams (Herbalife) where you do a 21 day challenge.

It was a couple of tubs of this shake powder, some vitamins, a free plastic milk shake thing and a tape measure, plus a motivating coach who would check in with you every now and then. It was over £200!!! WFT!?!? I ended up paying it as they put so much pressure on and made it really hard to then say no and implied I'd already agreed. I was such a mug!

A few weeks later I overheard the lady in charge laughing about how much money she was making each month. It's a bit of a pyramid scheme I think as if people who buy the shakes start selling it themselves they get a huge discount (and she gets a cut of each sale).

Five years later (and still annoyed I got scammed) I spotted her the other week (she still sells diet stuff) and I was amazed to see she was STILL massively over-weight. She clearly doesn't use her own diet product!!!

£5 .75 for a pint of lime and soda in 2011.
I refused to pay it. ( so I guess i didn't get ripped off)
I was really outraged as Dhs pint of beer was £3.80.

idontknowhowtodreamyourdreams · 07/05/2026 15:21

£9.75 for two poached eggs on one piece of toast (London 2 weeks ago).

The eggs were hard. Tiny amount of margarine (not even butter) on the toast, not spread out to the edges.

£26 for a Singapore Sling cocktail at Raffles in Singapore - in 2005, God knows what it costs now.

Wow more than 20 years ago! I suppose that is where they were invented so there is always a steady trade regardless of what they charge.
When we were at Changi for a stopover last year we had a slot at the rooftop pool and ordered a Singapore Sling each from the bar. £25 each so £75 for me, H and our adult son. It was quite nice (and strong) but in plastic glasses, definitely not a posh experience.

I thought it was quite reasonable comment. If it was 4 glasses of wine for 27 that’s 7.20 each glass and only really expensive if it was 4 glasses of water. I thought that’s what the pp meant.

Similar here, our solicitor failed to explain the implications of buying a leasehold flat with 81 yrs remaining . Still rankles.

£4.99 for a bottle of water in Smiths the other day at the airport.

€43 for a piece of nougat at a French market!!! Was so shocked but did the typically British thing and paid!

NewGirlInTown · 07/05/2026 15:24

Right now, especially with Council Tax and utilities. I feel ordinary people just exist to be ripped off by those in power.

F…ing hell at the nougat. Use this as a learning opportunity and resolve your say non to any further such rip offs.

TheLivelyAzureHedgehog · 07/05/2026 15:26

Getting crap advice from a supposedly hotshot tax lawyer which meant we had to pay her fees (£800) plus all the extra tax she said that we owed.., then having to pay another (much better and cheaper) tax advisor to undo the mess she made 🙄😵‍💫🤯

SpaceRaccoon · 07/05/2026 15:26

It's definitely a specific sick, sinking feeling that you get, and you feel almost mugged.
We deliberately opted to pay Eu7 a pint on a barge bar thing in Paris that overlooked Notre Damme (15 years ago so it seemed pricey then), but they had the prices clearly marked at the entrance so you could decide if it was worth it to you or not.
It's the sneakiness and dishonesty that stings.

The amount of income tax I pay. Annoys me every month I see my pay cheque.

Same here I have £1800 deductions every month makes me so annoyed.

Not surprised about the nougat. Some stall holders are just lying in wait for tourists: see also artisan bread and pain d’épices 🙄
