Now I don't mean something that was expensive but you really enjoyed, but where you felt ripped off.

I'll start.

26 euros for two Sprite's in Paris.

And this was circa 2014.

You must have great fun at pic n mix stands 😬😂

I avoid them now as I can’t trust myself 😂

Veiledveritas · 07/05/2026 12:28

@Splat92 similar to my post upthread?
Out of interest did your cat also give you evils for days afterwards for taking them to the rip off vet??

Wishitsnows · 07/05/2026 12:28

The amount of income tax I pay. Annoys me every month I see my pay cheque.

WhatAboutSecondBreakfast86 · 07/05/2026 12:29

7.50 euros for a small bag of potatoes from the local farmer's market. I just walked away!

Lomonald · 07/05/2026 12:32

I was ripped off at a Christmas market for Turkish delight it was £15 for a bag i was to stunned to argue so just paid and scuttled off.

Bristolandlazy · 07/05/2026 12:34

Went to a free taster session at a gym when I was eighteen and felt pressured to sign up and they told me I needed ten sessions on a toning table. Signed the direct debit and regretted it straight away. Only went a few times, hated it and it was a lot of money to me at the time.

Yes, your post reminded me of it, I had put it out of my mind until then 🙂and yes, he was certainly not as appreciative as I would have hoped.

At a Christmas market, that is a totally normal price. Would be a rip off in Tesco but not at a Christmas market. You pay a big mark up there and everyone going to a Christmas market knows to expect that.

£9.50 for a glass of wine in a posh Scottish hotel. Doesn’t sound too bad now, but it was twenty years ago.

rainbowunicorn22 · 07/05/2026 12:36

My dog was running about happily on the Sunday but on Monday panting a bit so thought her heart pills needed altering. took her to the vet left her while they had a look at her, at work i received a call saying she had cancer one lung collapsed and other full of cancer. sadly it was time to say goodbye but after I received a bill of 250 quid for her xrays and putting her to sleep then 300 for having her cremated talk about cashing in on someones grief

hellospring26 · 07/05/2026 12:38

Burger King in Ibiza Airport. 2 normal adult meals and 2 kids was something like £55.

Freshstartyear25 · 07/05/2026 12:38

There’s a butcher next to my daughter’s nursery. I’ve heard nice things about butchers but I always buy supermarket meat. I decided to try the butcher one evening. 2 slices of steak was £43.
I was too ashamed to ask him to return it. It tasted good and I’m sure that’s about what things like this cost but that’s normally what I’ll spend on meat for a week, it wasn’t even enough for a meal for a family of 4 at the time.

MidnightPatrol · 07/05/2026 12:39

My nursery costs ~£28,000 per year, but if I could claim free childcare hours it would be ~ £13,000.

I feel ripped off by the government, rather than the nursery.

LordofMisrule1 · 07/05/2026 12:42

You know those market stalls with loose sweets where you/they fill a bag, then they hit you with the cost and it's ASTRONOMICAL but most people are too socially awkward to just laugh and say no, put it back?

We once went to one at a Christmas fair and they rang up a bag of loose sweets and claimed it was £15 haha. Obviously they rely on people being too soft to let down their kids or risk being shouted at by the stall owner cos they have to put tt all back.

I had my card ready to scan, heard the total, and quickly put it away and said no thanks and left. But that was the closest I've ever been to being ripped off I'd say!

Buying slightly more than a basket-full of food at Waitrose about 10 years ago. "That's £88.10, please".

Going to "the tallest cinema in Europe" in Glasgow a few years ago and paying £7 for "nachos with sour cream". I got a tiny tray containing maybe half a packet of Doritos, plus a small container of dip which was made of water and yogurt with a hint of sour cream. I have never been back to the tallest cinema in Europe.

SwirlyGates · 07/05/2026 12:47

£24 in a bistro recently, for a cheese platter. When it arrived it was a few crackers with some teeny tiny squares of cheese.

That's awful. Sad

My glasses - decided to use a local optician rather than Vision Express / Specsavers etc to support the high street blah blah...... Got told I needed office lenses - whatever they are - and then that'll be £598 please - i was so stunned i just handed my card over. 3 years later, went to Specsavers for eye test - "what are you wearing these lenses for - totally unsuitable!", and I paid less than £40 for 2 pairs!!

$10 for a bottle of water from a hotel vending machine in vegas I was just recovering from the $60 taxi fare🙄

Doesn’t Vegas have strict regulations about taxi prices? It’s something I was impressed by the one time I went there.

blueberryfields · 07/05/2026 12:55

Accidentally turned into a 'school road' picking my child up earlier this week.
7 months ago it was decided to make this 100m stretch of road a 'school road' and fines apply for driving down it between 3-4pm. My child doesn't attend this school but it was the most logical way home from where I met him and I turned into it without even realising as it's not a route I usually take.
Now I'm due a £70 fine for 5 seconds of driving down an empty road, 40 mins after the school in question finished! My own fault but bloody annoying.

Every time I've ever had to pay to use the toilet in a train station concourse. I'm already paying a fortune for the train, and now I have to pay 50p for a wee!!

Toilets are train stations are all free now aren't they?
