Now I don't mean something that was expensive but you really enjoyed, but where you felt ripped off.

I'll start.

26 euros for two Sprite's in Paris.

And this was circa 2014.

Nearly £7 a drink's standard now, is it? The world's gone well and truly mad.

Edited

Of course it is

asdbaybeeee · 12/05/2026 06:10

28 euro for a pint and a half of lager in Barcelona fifteen years ago

Bought a dress on Vinted and when it arrived the lining which showed through the lace was a peach colour instead of the grey that was on the photo they had posted. I didnt realise at the time you shouldnt post photos of advertisements and not the real thing. £70 wasted.

My glasses - decided to use a local optician rather than Vision Express / Specsavers etc to support the high street blah blah...... Got told I needed office lenses - whatever they are - and then that'll be £598 please - i was so stunned i just handed my card over. 3 years later, went to Specsavers for eye test - "what are you wearing these lenses for - totally unsuitable!", and I paid less than £40 for 2 pairs!!

Years ago,I was a skint single mum

My dc needed an eye test and my mother was adamant I had to take them to this optician ('support independent!' which im all for) which she went to herself

I made the appointment and rocked up,they had the test, needed glasses and as I walked out the receptionist snatched the prescription out of my hands with the words 'i'll sort this for you' (I didnt know i could say 'no,i'll go elsewhere' she wouldnt get away with that now)

She got them to choose frames and sorted everything out

'£290 please'

I did pay but it wiped out my savings and took me months to re-save that money

Ended up at specsavers for the next test-not only would the frames and lenses have been free at their place but the kids didnt even need bloody glasses in the first place

I was fuming and all my mother could say was 'opps, independents are a bit more expensive'

Total rip off more like

Legomania · 10/06/2026 15:01

DS needed special lenses that his (local independent) optician quoted £350 for but Specsavers had the identical lenses for a third cheaper. I felt bad but no way was I taking that kind of hit (magnified over time) to shop independent.

igelkott2026 · 10/06/2026 16:06

This is going back a bit now but we stayed in what looked like a lovely B&B from the outside. DS was a toddler and we took a travel cot and sleeping bag for him.

The B&B charged us £30 extra for him. All he got for that was a bowl of cornflakes for breakfast. They weren't very friendly either.

I don't know if it's still there but it was in Burton Bradstock in Dorset.

£7 for a bowl of 'homemade' vegetable soup in a cafe in York about 5 years ago, it was absolutely Heinz Big Soup chunky vegetable. It's the only bad review I've ever left.

I remember having an argument at a service area over homemade soup! They were bemused at the idea that heating up tinned soup didn't make it "home-made". Admittedly it wasn't £7 though.

Every time I've ever had to pay to use the toilet in a train station concourse. I'm already paying a fortune for the train, and now I have to pay 50p for a wee!!

It's free at Waterloo now. I think I actually preferred paying the 30p (as it was before they made it free) because there were no queues. Now every Thomasina, Wilhelmina and Harriet uses it and I have to wait!

Although they now have more loos than they used to.

The amount of income tax I pay. Annoys me every month I see my pay cheque.

I don't mind month to month but it's annoying when you get a bonus and see the massive chunk that gets taken off.

igelkott2026 · 10/06/2026 16:12

I now pay £89 for a 20 minute dental hygienist appointment. Before COVID, I paid £28.

igelkott2026 · 10/06/2026 16:16

On the loo thing, not ripped off but thought it was very odd. I was staying in a hotel where you got a "free" breakfast with the room. Many if not most hotels ask for your room number when you go for breakfast but they didn't.

However if you wanted to use the loo near reception, you needed your room key to get in.

So they were more worried about someone having a free wee than a free breakfast!

Monty36 · 10/06/2026 16:39

By Trailfinders. Didn’t see the price of our flights until late. Paid for a superior room and got a dingy small one with no view at all.
Never will I use them again.

My dentist has started charging £50 for the actual appointment. Before you even go and they see you.
Refundable but they then book you in again so just carry it forward.

I paid £10 in a pub in stoke-on-trent that was 100% a ready meal that I regularly bought for £1 at tesco (going back a few years)

They tried to tell me it was homemade-bollocks it was,all they'd done is warm it up and slap it on a plate-the pitta bread was thrown on top

I'd had the exact same meal two nights earlier at home

For another £10 (two meals for £20 deal),my ex got a lovely pie and veg with gravy

Im still fuming and we broke up 12 years ago!

Legoland Windsor.

I was underwhelmed by Lego land, but most theme parks are just places made to part you with your money. 💵

You used to get this a lot when choosing the veggie option in a pub - it would be veggie burgers that were easily recognisable as the ones from Tesco's freezer. Now at least they are veggie burgers (or other veggie food) that is bought in from pub wholesalers and not ones you regularly buy yourself... a minor improvement!

Oh for homemade pub food!

Had 4 kittens booked in for neutering. They said they had to have a precheck. Took all 4 in for the check and they charged me just under £50 per kitten.. just to look them over, whole appointment was less than 5 minutes. They didn;t check tummies or teeth or anything. I was distraught but had my disabled son with me and didnt want to upset him to cause a fuss. I'm still upset about it VETS4PETS - Hull. bastards!

This is worth complaining about of it's at all recent. They must have fixed rates for this kind of thing

I think the CMA needs to look into this sort of thing. Presumably it's so if you cancel at short notice they can charge you. But what about if they cancel at short notice. Why do they assume their time is more valuable than yours?

menopausequeen · 11/06/2026 17:59

£44 for two people to have a kebab in Dalaman airport

ImWearingPantaloons · 11/06/2026 18:01

My dental hygienist- paid £60 for an appointment for her to poke about in my mouth for five minutes, give my teeth a quick clean for another five, then told me I’m doing a good job and ushered me out the door.

I ordered the veggie curry at a restaurant. I actually saw the "chef" go to the Sainsburys opposite and come back carrying a cheap veggie curry ready meal! He did sprinkle some parsley on it before serving. 🤣

My says that you don't need to worry about it. They will just hold onto the deposit while you rebook. But if you dont rebook in 2 months you lose it. 🤨 Even though it's their fault...

Did you pay for it? I would have refused! Or rather, I would have paid the Sainsburys price!
