Now I don't mean something that was expensive but you really enjoyed, but where you felt ripped off.

I'll start.

26 euros for two Sprite's in Paris.

And this was circa 2014.

I'm roaring at the guinea pig with chapped lips! 😆😆😆

Cazz1953 · 08/05/2026 18:41

When I see what people have been charged for alcohol, I’m glad I don’t drink. No doubt soft drinks will be ridiculous prices too.

Charlize43 · 08/05/2026 18:49

Thames Water. My bill increased by around £200 last year and my property cannot be metered. It's not like we live in Spain or Morocco where there is risk of drought. It fucking rains all the time here. Water in the UK is a resource that is in abundance!

Shocking that all the money we are forced to pay goes on CEO bonuses and shareholder holder dividends. Absolute crooks!

Morgan37 · 08/05/2026 18:56

£3.95 for a bottle of water at WH Smith in Manchester airport

TheQuickSloth · 08/05/2026 19:01

A 'tin of crisps' at the theatre when we took the kids to a show. It was £10 for not a lot of crisps (the tickets weren't much more!)

Mskittenheels · 08/05/2026 19:04

£84 a month for 9 years for critical illness that wasn’t worth the paper it was wrote on.

BoarBrush · 08/05/2026 19:12

28 fecking quid for a 4 mile taxi journey in Edinburgh. This was midmorning so not even night rate. Was outraged.

At a Christmas market, that is a totally normal price. Would be a rip off in Tesco but not at a Christmas market. You pay a big mark up there and everyone going to a Christmas market knows to expect that.

Clearly not everyone. It's about feeling ripped off; pp felt ripped off. Understandably.

Auburngal · 08/05/2026 19:26

I do hate card fees when the only way to pay is by card!!!

GinPin2 · 08/05/2026 19:27

Back in the mid 70s I was a student teacher and fiance a teacher in his first year. We went out with his school staff for a Christmas meal.
We chose the cheapest meal each and drank water.
At the end of the evening the bill was split equally between everyone.
We learnt our lesson!!!

£180 for some fairly basic handyman work that took him 90 mins max. No repeat business there!

I can better that.....or worse it; £80 for 15mins. He stated on his website 'no call out fee', then pointed out that he had come to me specifically. Never again.

Auburngal · 08/05/2026 19:29

I’m still upset about paying £4.50 for a J2O in a pub 20-22 years ago. I was driving.

Ladygodalmighty · 08/05/2026 19:31

Charged £7.90 in local hospital shop for chocolate that cost £1.80 in the supermarket. The gun and mask were conspicuous by their absence. 😳

TheDevilWears · 08/05/2026 19:41

A trichioigist in New York maybe twenty years ago. He took five minutes to look at my scalp under a magnified lamp and tell me that I was allergic to sodium laurel sulphate … $150. Hr wasn’t even embarrassed off trying to drag out the appointment 😂

KatiePricesKnickers · 08/05/2026 19:47

Long taxi ride in Mexico. Should have been about $80, paid $200

Sueandthegoldfish · 08/05/2026 19:58

There are many, but always remember paying the equivalent of £10 for a pint of warm lager at a post F1 concert in Dubai about 10 years ago. It was my friend (who lives there’s) birthday and we were determined to have a drink.
Same friend once sent a load of cowboy roofers up to my house - they’d “done” her gutters and she was very happy with them. They took one look up a ladder , said mine were fine and demanded £40. And they wouldn’t leave until id paid and shown them the transaction on my phone. I know I should have told them where to go but I was on my own and felt vulnerable.

Good Earth Chinese meal for two: entree and main; no drinks £94 .. almost fainted.

Yup, I live in Edinburgh and feel your pain. I took a longish taxi journey in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago. £13. What a difference!

AlwaysHungry123 · 08/05/2026 20:10

Legoland, Disneyland - you pay the entry price but get no value if you have to stand in a queue for 90min with small children unless you pay extra to skip the queue which still gets you like 4 rides only. It should be illegal! I’ve boycotted these sort of places now.

saw a private consultant about my wrist, he didn’t have my notes or xray because his PA was on holiday, took 2min looking at my wrist, said the pain would hopefully go away now that I’m off work, the whole visit was like 7 min, £250! That was 10 years ago!

Two or three years ago at a fancy supermarket paid €24 for 6 passion fruit. Hadn't checked the price per fruit...😳

This was Cameron toll to the western. Was shitting myself watching the meter. I can get to the Borders hospital for that, a bloody hour away!

Tbf it's still about a tenner for a pint nowadays. Fucking extortionate but...

ThePandoricaAwakes · 08/05/2026 20:23

£750 to get my roof and solar panels cleaned, then £1400 to get the roof fixed 😩

Fireangels · 08/05/2026 20:23

DD got married in her dream location. A beautiful barn in the countryside. Catering was all in house and we chose a lovely menu that included wines and canapés etc. We had about 25 extra people for the evening and chose what I thought would be sufficient buffet food for this.
Oh no, said the caterer that won’t be enough, we ran out last week and the hosts were soooo embarrassed! You must order more. So we did.
on the night the buffet was barely touched. The day guests had eaten a very filling meal already, and it was way too much.
At the end of the evening I watched as platter after platter was returned to the kitchen.
Next morning (we stayed at the venue), I thought they’d box up the leftovers for us, but they just brought out the cake. My DH wouldn’t let me ask about the food because he was worried they’d start an argument, so we left without it.
I estimate they overcharged us by around £2000.

celticprincess · 08/05/2026 20:35

Can’t quite remember the price, but something stupid like the equivalent to £50 for 3 bottles of water and 3 croissants at Dubai airport by the gates and then not being allowed to take the water through to the plane.
