Now I don't mean something that was expensive but you really enjoyed, but where you felt ripped off.

I'll start.

26 euros for two Sprite's in Paris.

And this was circa 2014.

It's outrageous, isn't it? I think it started in the days before you could download tickets online and venues somehow thought that the cost of providing a box office to sell the tickets wasn't a basic essential part of their overheads to factor in to their prices. Just like tipping or adding extra charges for service in restaurants, in fact.

When you booked over the phone and didn't live near enough to collect them in person, they would charge you more than it cost them for sending them out to you, as an added earner. Once they no longer needed to pay people to deal with selling the tickets, they were reluctant to give up the extra money. I reckon they hoped that people would be so used to paying an extra charge that it wouldn't occur to them that they were now paying extra for nothing at all.

Sadly, if they did the honourable thing and scrapped the hidden charge, and added it to the actual face value price of the tickets... after a couple of years, somebody would dream up the idea of charging a spurious extra fee, so you'd just end up paying the unjustifiable extra twice!

You see similar with ebooks, whereby Amazon and others will charge you exactly the same price (or even more) as they would if they'd had all of the considerable extra costs of supplying and delivering a physical book. Corporate greed means that nowhere ever passes the obvious savings back on to you, once they've got you into the habit of choosing a new option that is much cheaper for them as standard.

I agree, the money-for-nothing ticket booking charges are inexcusable. If there are no circumstances in which you can buy a ticket for the advertised price (e.g. by going into the venue and paying in person), then the charges ought to be illegal.

5 mins for vet consultation as cat had upset stomach. 1 anti sickness injection.
£115.

I feel you. But we had an out of hours appt for the cat with a urine infection (also 5 minutes) and the bill started with a 4!

MadisonAvenue · 08/05/2026 17:57

I’ve just thought of another. Not a huge monetary rip off in the grand scheme of things but still a charge which shouldn’t be there.

The main car park in town has now changed so that you can only pay via an app, all ticket machines have been removed, but there’s a ‘Convenience Fee’ of 25p on top of the parking charge for using the app which, should you choose to park there, you have no choice but to use.

Cats vets bills are a nightmare. With my old cat I forget the amount of times I was there with him for antibiotics as he ate poisonous flowers, got infected abscesses from fighting, you name it he had it. Plus Noel Fitzpatrick practice. Almost cleared out my savings at the time! Thank god my current cat is sensible and boring!

£32 for 2 vodka and cokes in a hotel in London a couple of months ago - one last drink before going to bed! Can’t bring myself to tell my dad, he’d keel off his perch! 🫣

This should also be illegal. (Bangs gavel)

Car Hire abroad. They seem to make the price up on the spot and then add a huge amount on for insurance or pay €700 deposit.

$10 for a bottle of water from a hotel vending machine in vegas I was just recovering from the $60 taxi fare🙄

On my 1st trip to Vegas many years ago, the first thing I noticed in our hotel room was a small bottle of water at $4, the tap water was perfectly drinkable🙄😬

$90 dollars for 2 double Jack Daniels and coke and a tub of popcorn last month watching a show on Broadway.

Tell me about it. Avis cancelled my 1st contract for car hire in Italy and asked me to take out another one on arrival, which I did. They never refunded the 1st one, never answered emails, never answered the phone So I paid twice . I had to go via my credit card and finally got it back after I proved I’d exhausted all avenues to contact Avis.

£38 for a rum and coke and a beer at the Shard in London. 🤬

$50 for a rum and coke and a vodka and tonic in Vegas.

$10 for a shite cup of coffee in Vegas

We all also got a healthy dose of food poisoning last time I went 10 years ago. Food & service was shit and the prices totally not worth it, even without the d&v

With the new rules, vets have to be transparent with their pricing. I'm not saying it's ever going to be cheap but when my cat needed medicine, they have to tell you if you can get it cheaper elsewhere, like online. They directed me to petdrugsonline which were cheaper. Of course, once the vet charges £27 to write a prescription for a different company there wasn't much in it but for repeat prescriptions you would only pay it once. Apparently

Legoland. It was overcrowded to the point of unenjoyable. Plus charging for the car parks (I know it’s a Merlin thing) is a joke, it’s not like you’re dumping your car there to go and piss all your money away anywhere else is it?

Following on from Disney in USA, really annoys me

did LL always charge?

some hotels do this as well

ConnieHeart · 08/05/2026 18:30

£3 for 2 lettuce leaves with which to feed the giraffes at Longleat. Of course you're paying for the experience but I reckon the lettuce was about the same price as gold, pound for pound 🤣

Similar here came down one Sunday morning cat wasn't moving at all, rushed to vets kept in for 5 days on drip etc - turns out she was constipated - but they wanted 1,200e for the week treatment. Husband kicked up a stink and got it down to 700e. That was over 10 years ago now so god only knows how much it is today, now more clued in before i rush to the vets

Ever had a constipated cat turn into an obstipated cat , and do you know the difference?

suburburban · 08/05/2026 18:35

Went to a spring fair recently run by church for charity

it was so nice to have a burger for £3.50 and had a great time

no I don't but I think after 2 full days in the vet they should have identified that it was constipated and provided treatment that we could have done some at home instead of keeping her in for another 5 days and charging huge day rate for it.
my cat was very well.looked after and survived a healthy life untill she passed last year at 18 years of age
