Whilst she went into side to drop of her children. It was off nursery premises and she works part time and children attend the nursery as well.

Aibu to report it? She does it daily.

Is there any reason why you can't just ask her not to leave her car running and let her know why it's a bad idea?

When she could report them (to who knows who - the police, their boss, the council, idk)? You absolute spoilsport!

B1anche · 06/05/2026 10:44

It might have been helpful if you had mentioned the kid in the back seat in your original post 🙄

Why? The point is the car is on, no driver. How is that not dangerous

She drops her own kids off at t he e nursery where she works? I’m confused

MrsChristmasHasResigned · 06/05/2026 11:04

I hate people who leave their cars idling around kids. There are several parents who do it while their kids are playing football at the playing fields near us and I am constantly amazed that they think it is ok.

tooloololoo · 06/05/2026 11:07

What’s the crime?

Leaving the car running when you aren't in it

Just asked my echo the definition of busybody, maybe just get busy!

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 06/05/2026 11:19

I am aghast how many people on this thread have asked what the crime is.

"Highway Code Rule 123
You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road. Generally, if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution. However it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or for diagnosing faults."

LeaderBee · 06/05/2026 11:20

Unless i'm missing something here, since when has it been a crime to leave your car running?

EDIT: Since 1988 apparently

Seeline · 06/05/2026 11:23

So is the car on the public highway?

Please confirm that there is actually a child left in the vehicle, and the age of the child.

MotherofPufflings · 06/05/2026 11:24

Taking the handbrake off with the engine running is no more dangerous than with the engine off though. The child in the back would also need to put it in gear, engage the clutch and accelerate, no? I'd be super-impressed with their driving ability if they managed to hit a child. Even if it's an automatic they'd still need to do two of those things.

Leaving a car running..... Yeah all well until her kid in the back of the car goes on the handbrake and her car crushes a kid????

Ah yes, the infamous drip feed. Write a post deliberately designed to get lots of people to answer in a particular way, come back an hour later with an attempt at a ‘gotcha’ follow up post.

Its illegal it idle your car like this.

Do you report all idling cars then?

Whats that got to do with anything? I am fortunately not around places where kids are and if one parent wants to poison the air that their children and others are breathing, I have no buy in. I also think if people are assholes enough to do this they are not likely to be open to a stranger telling them to stop. But if I had kids playing and another parent was doing this - yes, I would report, tell them to stop, whatever.

SapphireSeptember · 06/05/2026 11:37

FFS, I've never driven but even I know it's illegal to leave your car running. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Agreed, I am completely astounded that so many people who apparently hold a driving licence don't know this.

Bromptotoo · 06/05/2026 11:40

I suspect it's illegal to leave the engine running while unattended.

Some councils have policies/penalties for cars left idling.

If it's pinched insurance will tell her to take a running jump.

BleedinglyObvious · 06/05/2026 11:42

Leaving a car engine running. Road Highway Act - 123.

The car could roll forwards or backwards, get stolen etc.

@MidnightPatrol, @tooloololoo and others.

As for leaving a child in the car - words fail me!

The level of ignorance on this thread amazes me.

It is surprising isn't it.

CoralOP · 06/05/2026 11:44

Just concentrate on your life, understand you share it with billions of other people who are all on their own journeys, you will have a pretty miserable existence if you spend your time and energy trying to report people/catch people out/ get them in trouble because they are doing something you wouldn't do.

Or you could care about the welfare of a child left in a car.

Not sure who you're thinking of reporting her to - but if you're really concerned about the child, you'd be better having a word with her thus:

"Jenny, I noticed yesterday that you left Bilbo in the car and left it running whilst you dropped Nimrod off at nursery. I hope you don't mind me saying, but you mustn't do that - it's not only illegal to leave the car running, it's dangerous for Bilbo. I could help you by...!
