Whilst she went into side to drop of her children. It was off nursery premises and she works part time and children attend the nursery as well.

Aibu to report it? She does it daily.

I might start cycling on the pavement if we're letting things go

Legal to do exactly that in lots of places

AgnesMcDoo · 06/05/2026 16:27

It’s real easy to see why totalitarian regimes are so stable because so much of the population love to report things.

ButterYellowFlowers · 06/05/2026 16:28

Technically it’s illegal if on a public road. Though not a private driveway.

SingedSoul · 06/05/2026 16:23

It's not Herbie went Bananas or Kit from Knight Rider. I assume the handbrake is on, it's in neutral and she hasn't put a brick on the accelerator or tied an unsuspecting infant to her gearstick.

And it's nursery so parents will be with the small children, lots of them strapped into buggies, holding hands, being carried etc...

It's not like a madman is driving through a school field at playtime in a tank....

Tekknonan · 06/05/2026 15:05

Apart from the fact it's illegal and adds to the pollution of the environment, what is there to worry about here?

A lot of entitled drivers on this thread.

This isnt the only thread with entitled drivers alas

Makes a change from entitled cyclists then.

A car was left running by a man on my road a few years ago and someone got in it and smashed it into another car. Leaving the car running means other people can drive it.

Catwalking · 06/05/2026 16:33

have any of you read your highway code?
“Rule 123 of The Highway Code looks at ‘The Driver and the Environment’. It states that drivers must not leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary on a public road.”
And if i do it in my car an alarm sounds!!

This. I wouldn't personally do what this particular driver has been doing, but I'm rolling my eyes at all the posters desperate to tell tales on the naughty rule-breaker. Ostensibly because they have the best interests of asthmatic children at heart but in reality because they like feeling superior.

In Highway Code speak Must Not means its illegal Should / ShouldNot is a reccomendation

Why did OP suddenly have a child in the back seat when the thread wasn't going her way

No. It doesn't matter.

Ultimately a car shouldn't be running regardless if it's empty or not.

The women was no where to be seen.

I'll keep checking the tabloids for this headline! 😆

Leaving a car running..... Yeah all well until her kid in the back of the car goes on the handbrake and her car crushes a kid????

But it will move if the kid takes the handbrake off whether or not the engine is running? I agree the engine shouldn't be left on but your point doesn't make sense to me as you agreed with another poster it was safe to leave them in the car but not with the engine running?

TeaPot496 · 06/05/2026 17:12

A well timed visit from parking enforcement or PCSO will deal with it..

outdooryone · 06/05/2026 17:26

Wow. Mumsnet is full of mums who would rather defend poor driving than consider that a civil society may ask drivers to take care, likely increased care, around children / early years setting.

I think a few on this thread have outed themselves as having very different values to me about risk and safeguarding.

End of the day the driver leaving a car running is both breaking the law and opening up all sorts of scenarios that can lead to harm of children. Surely as fellow parents you would want to push back against that and suggest a better standard?

Does it? Cyclists usually get their arses handed to them on here, even when they’re not being entitled and 100% in the right.

But the greatest risk was the woman driving to the nursery...

We all drive out kids every day knowing they could be killed.

But oh no .... An idling car is the real danger and police matter 🤔

Fairly sure children got run over at a school just a few months ago after a car ploughed through a window. It was headline news

maudelovesharold · 06/05/2026 09:17

Presumably she wants to report that the car is left belching fumes next to a.nursery? It’s illegal to leave your car with the engine running in the uk. Also to sit in the car with it idling when you are parked up.

How I wish everyone adhered to this.

tnorfotkcab · 06/05/2026 17:32

Do wish everyone adhered to the parking overnight rules too....?

They do in our area. The school alert them to consistent illegal parking on the school run too. Great deterrent, easy money with a PCN.

As someone whose brother died because of pollution induced lung disease I can assure you I don’t feel in the least bit superior.

Idling engines:

  • pollute
-add to global warming -cause illness -make the local environment unpleasant for all

Is thst reason enough?
