To feel upset about post on local fb group

I live in a fairly small village where people are super nosey but I keep myself to myself. Recently I chose to participate in no mow may (I did start a bit early) where you don’t mow your lawn to encourage wild flowers and bees / butterflies. I have also build a small hedgehog shelter.

today some busybody from down my road has posted on the local fb group about people needing to mow their lawns short and not have any wood in the garden as unsightly and attracts pests and rats. Now I know this is aimed at me and I feel upset.

i don’t want to mow it but they’ve got all their cronies making comments as well. I’ve got a friend coming to mow the lawn now in a few days as I can’t face the drama. We can leave a few patches where the lovely wild flowers are.

Funny how you only picked out my comments when there are numerous other people who have pointed out that it’s an offensive insult and shouldn’t be used

Yours was the first

Yes I didn’t realise it was such an insult.

Why did you use it then, you clearly didnt think it was a positive word

zingally · 03/05/2026 15:55

To be fair, it's only 3rd May, so your lawn has probably been looking unkempt for quite some time...

That being said, it's no one else's business!

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 03/05/2026 15:55

You'll never please everyone and especially not people online.

As per this thread… she didn’t know Karen was offensive, she edited to correct once told… have a day off.

redfairy · 03/05/2026 15:56

I'd do as another poster said as link to No Mow May. I left my front lawn last year in May but intentionally carved out shapes with the mower lest people think I'm just a lazy cow.

Doidontimmm · 03/05/2026 15:56

She used it as an insult so was fully aware it was offensive

I do no mow may and the last three years haven't mown until the end of june because I don't give a duck what randoms think about it.
They can slag me off behind my back and live their petty little lives through local facebook whinging. I'm not on it and quite frankly I don't care.
Grow your grass for the month OP and help nature, it won't encourage rats unless there is food and rubbish that they can eat. Your wankerish neighbours need to educate themselves if they think it will.
Before any wag says it, I'm perfectly calm and relaxed thanks.😋

Meadowfinch · 03/05/2026 15:58

Sounds like you have a bunch of Hyacinth Buckets in your village. They are shallow and ignorant, and their views count for nothing.

Ignore them and enjoy your wildlife garden.

Sux2buthen · 03/05/2026 15:58

ffs, OP knew it was a term but not how personally some people take it. As soon as she did she changed it and people are still banging on 🙄
I would just ignore it OP, pretty soon some tedious online person with nothing better to do will be posting on your local group about parking or whatever these people get off on. Embrace the grass!

If it wasn't edit wasn't available to see noone would have been any the wiser.🙄

BerryTwister · 03/05/2026 15:59

I did no mow May last year. Big mistake. Loads of weeds took over and the lawn hasn’t looked nice since then.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 03/05/2026 16:00

Stick a flag in the lawn saying ‘no mow may’, ‘bee food’ and ‘hedgehogs live here’ etc.
if you make it pretty, children will stop to look at the flowers.

FinchiePink · 03/05/2026 16:01

I'm old and ugly enough to remember when "Wendy" was the choice of insult on MN. So give over with all the sniping about "Karen".

Honestly I'd just mow the lawn but then not mow it for the rest of the month - you're still basically doing no-mow May.

Charlenedickens · 03/05/2026 16:02

It’s hardly no no mo may if you’ve not done it for some time and it’s 3rd may, just own it if you’re not cutting your grass instead of pretending it’s something it’s not.

and yes people will think it looks a mess, if it’s just overgrown. And hard to respond on 3 may and say you’ve left it weeks for no mo may. And yes it can attract pests.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 03/05/2026 16:03

It depends on where you live

Wealthy area - no mow may

Poor area - lazy cow

Sorry girl, i'd just get it mowed, its not worth the stress of being labelled as dirty

CDTC · 03/05/2026 16:03

Either comment and say why you're not mowing or ignore and move on. Why are you letting some people you don't even know, dictate what you do with your life?

DuskOPorter · 03/05/2026 16:04

People who do these no mow things here stick a little sign in their garden to stop the nosey busybodies commenting. Even the council have to stick the sign up to stop the comments.

whothehellisstillwaiting · 03/05/2026 16:04

Why does it bother you so much what other people think? It's your property and your business. You're doing a lovely thing for nature. Grow some
balls and grow your grass. Fuck them.

Get one of these

Yep that is similar to the ones the council give out here.

DeskGnome · 03/05/2026 16:07

I've got no sympathy for you, given this sort of wet lettuce behaviour, it's clear you weren't serious about the nature thing anyway.
