AIBU to be amazed my friend does all her laundry in one day?

I called over to a friend yesterday evening with my dc. She was just coming down the stairs with an empty laundry basket when she answered the door.
she took a few minutes to answer the door so as she opened the door, she apologised and said she was putting away the laundry.
I jokingly said oh no bother I must put mine away, It’s been sitting there all week I need to clear the basket for the next lot.
she then proceeded to tell me she does ALL her laundry on a Saturday- washes, dries, irons and puts away! IN ONE DAY! I nearly fell to the floor. She said she had two and a half loads.
I was even more baffled because she couldn’t have us round until 7ish because she had a crazy busy day. Her dd had training, her ds had a friend over for a playdate, her dd then had an appointment in the afternoon. Then she had to collect her dh from the train station. My mind is blown! She fits her laundry in between doing all of this…and she irons! 😅 where am I going wrong?

I can get all the clothes done by Saturday lunch and the bedding towels etc over the rest of the weekend and it doesn’t stop me doing anything else I want to over the weekend!
I then do the ironing Sunday afternoon watching trash tv when nobody is allowed to disturb me! It’s not a job I mind doing and I can’t stand unironed clothes

The planet really is doomed.

It really is. I once started a thread on another website asking how long people's showers are, and many, many people answered 40-45 minutes. 😱 Mine are 7-10 mins if washing my hair, and about 3 mins if not. I don't spend any more time in there than it takes me to actually wash. But it seems people stand there for ages under the running water. I had a friend to stay, and I couldn't believe how long her showers were. Twenty minutes if she wasn't washing her hair and forty minutes if she was. There was no water left for anyone else!

Justploddingonandon · Today 12:26

When I worked full time in the off blitzed the laundry at the weekend, but don’t understand how anyone with a family only does 2.5 loads! My bedsheets take up a load on their own.
I have been trying to convince the children that they don’t need clean clothes ( apart from pants and socks) every day, but DD is still at the age that she often spills stuff down herself and DS is a sporty teenager.

Bin off the ironing. Bin it off.

I enjoy ironing, and clothes definitely look better for it imo.

How do you get everything washed and dried in one day? Even with two clothes lines and a sunny day in the summer I couldn't get it all done.

I use my tumble dryer, unless it's sunny enough to dry laundry in 1-2 hours. I always tumble towels to keep them fluffy and my bedding because of pollen allergy

PurplishGemstones · Today 12:32

Why did twin tubs need to be monitored?

Because they don't work automatically. You have to manually fill it with water and transfer the washing from the tub to the spinning tub, turn the spinner on and off and manually pipe in the rinse water. You virtually have to stand over it the whole time. Pausing only to fill your wine glass.

Absolutely agree!

Obviously OP’s mate doesn’t do unnecessary washing like washing towels and pyjamas and tops after one wear. Good for her

intrepidpanda · Today 12:34

Clearinguptheclutter · Today 08:59

Well she is totally mad IMO because she is presumably using her dryer a lot which is costing a small fortune

this time of year I hang out everything. Yes that means some days are unsuitable but most are. Other stuff gets hung up in the airing cupboard. I’ve got a dryer and used it twice this year so far.

she is spending all day doing a rather tedious chore. Far more normal to spend a bit of time sporting it out throughout the week than basically devote a whole day off to it when you could be doing something more interesting instead

eta 2.5 loads is not very much. I can wash and dry that when weather is good. Most of us deal with far more!

Edited

I dried 3 loads outside the other weekend. I dont have a dryer.
Washing doesn't actually take much time. Put in machine and press start then 10min to hang out and take in.
You all washing a load of stuff by hand or something?

1x sox & pants
1x delicates (my shirts)
1x jeans & t shirts
1x towels
1x bedding
And there's only 2x of us!
AND I can wash more of MY stuff later in the week too!!
What am I doing wrong then?

Sorry, is this daily washing? I'm getting that from the 1 x sox and pants. It sounds like you're washing everything you use every day. Have I read that right? If so, you don't need to wash bedding, towels, and jeans after once use. More like once a week. And most people save up their smalls and tops and wash them when they have a full load. It's not a case of just washing everything you used yesterday, today.

Sorry if I read it wrong!

Fridge freezers are as much of a risk as washing machines and nobody is turning those off when they leave the house.

Not according to the fire service statistics.

Dressfinder · Today 12:36

I've got a 10kg machine and do 2 loads a day as a minimum. Bedding would be 3 loads alone.
We're a house of 5 and aren't doing anything special to generate the amount of laundry we have, just normal uniforms, towels, pyjamas etc.
Is your friend a nudist?

Rocket surgery is a well known deliberate mixed metaphor. It's been used on the interwebs for years.

& still sounds as stupid as it did the first time.

user2848502016 · Today 12:37

I did 2 loads yesterday, washed and dried outside. I don’t really iron though and they do need putting away tonight- usually Sunday evening job so everyone gets their school uniform ready for the week
I have way more than 2.5 loads a week though so washing is done on weekdays too

Ncisdouble · Today 12:37

I belive one of the top 3 are dishwashers as well. Fridges are top 6? If I remember top 10 correctly

Why are you washing cycling gloves???

Controversial on MN but I often peg our washing the night before, if the weather is going to be good. Then bring it in the next morning. I realise this leads to it being “darker on”.

Being darker on? What does that mean?

Darked on. It's a silly MN joke from an ancient thread.

I do mine in one day, I WFH so once every hour or so I leave my desk to stretch my legs & load/unload machines as required. I'm not sitting in front of them being hypnotized by watching my knickers go round and round

that's brought back a memory, my Ted & I doing that when I was little. I think I must have been about 3, nearly 4 when we got our first automatic machine & the twin tub went. I lived watching the clothes & all the soap bubbles splashing around 🤣

Yes, I remember that old thread. Also your undies will fill up with insects if you leave them on the line overnight 😁

My MIL (mother of 7!) used to do all washing in one go on one day. If your washing wasn't in the pile by, say, Thursday, then tough you'd have to wait another week!

I find laundry the only household task that we haven't yet got a good system for. We are a 'wash when it's dirty' family, and we have an ironing lady who comes every other week, but still it's always the task that's left until last to do!

NoMoreSocks · Today 12:46

I don’t know how people get laundry done in a day. It’s a never ending story here, I don’t think it’s ever really done except in a heat wave and then it ends up hanging round waiting to be ironed and put away for days.
We seem to have a lot of time sensitive sports kits that require immediate attention, DH for example has one pair of running shorts he prefers and likes to wear them three times a week, one teen has training kit that is required twice a week, one teen has swimming 6 times a week, I have two sets of gym kit but it’s needed 5-6 times a week.

The stats I can find now all lump washing machines and dryers together.

The information I'd seen reported had tumble driers as highest/high risk but then washing machines, dishwashers, fridges and freezers all at the same level of risk.

Ovens and microwaves were the lowest risk.

My husband does the laundry. I just asked him how many loads per week. He said between 3 and 4 (family of 4 though eldest away at uni some of the time).

He is astounded to hear about those who do 2 loads a day. Are those families who soil themselves daily and piss the bed every night?

yes 2 disabled children who do just that. And sometimes more than once. And thank-you.for putting it so compassionately !
Anyone who is aghast at a family doing more than 4 loads of washing a week must have a v poor imagination imo !

1 for socks and pants for a start! Why separate them?!

Yes, I separate by colours, not clothing type. So in my darks load there will be socks (mine are all black), dark jeans, dark T-shirts, dark undies, and dark tops. And my colours loads will have undies, tops, T-shirts, and pale-blue jeans too. I do have a delicates load.

I also separate by temperature, so I have hot darks, hot whites, and medium colours. (No hot colours, as they will fade.) The hots are for the things that need to be washed on a hotter temp, like towels, pants, socks, bedding, and pyjamas. Everything that's either slept in or worn on your feet or undercarriage, basically. So a hot darks wash will include my black towels, dark undies and socks, and my dark bedding. Medium darks are dark jeans and tops. Hot whites includes the white bedding and underwear. But low or medium whites will be things like tops with lace - actually, the delicates wash.

I'm single. It's still complicated!

P.S. My categories are:

Hot darks
Hot whites
Medium colours
Medium darks
Dark delicates
Coloured delicates
White delicates
