AIBU to be amazed my friend does all her laundry in one day?

I called over to a friend yesterday evening with my dc. She was just coming down the stairs with an empty laundry basket when she answered the door.
she took a few minutes to answer the door so as she opened the door, she apologised and said she was putting away the laundry.
I jokingly said oh no bother I must put mine away, It’s been sitting there all week I need to clear the basket for the next lot.
she then proceeded to tell me she does ALL her laundry on a Saturday- washes, dries, irons and puts away! IN ONE DAY! I nearly fell to the floor. She said she had two and a half loads.
I was even more baffled because she couldn’t have us round until 7ish because she had a crazy busy day. Her dd had training, her ds had a friend over for a playdate, her dd then had an appointment in the afternoon. Then she had to collect her dh from the train station. My mind is blown! She fits her laundry in between doing all of this…and she irons! 😅 where am I going wrong?

I have 3 dc and do a load a day in this nice weather I’m also hanging it all on the line. The putting it away is the bit I hate the most!

Elishiva · 03/05/2026 18:41

I did 2 loads on Thursday because it was sunny and windy so it dried outside, I don’t iron anything though and some of it is still in the basket.
I do 3 loads a week just for myself, 4 or 5 when youngest is home.

I don’t own a tumble dryer if that helps cheer up those who hate the fact I do 14 plus machine loads a week.

Not really, there's the electricity used to heat the water and do the wash, not to mention the huge amount of water you're using which in many places is a valuable resource.

Edited to add not to mention the extra wear and tear on clothes and the leakage of microparticles of plastic.

minipie · 03/05/2026 20:05

I have 4 loads a week, occasionally 5 if I’m doing delicates.

Darks, lights, bedding, towels. I have a 12kg machine 😍 so I can fit a week’s worth of darks or lights in a single load, and the bedding and towels also fit in one load each. Family of 4 incl plenty of sports kit etc.

I have noticed the load size is creeping up as the DC get into teenage years so it may be this won’t last forever…

XenoBitch · 03/05/2026 20:06

My mum does this but she has free electricity on Sundays, so she makes the most of it.

@likeafishneedsabike what do you actually think will happen if your children wore their school trousers and sweater/sweatshirt for 5 days and just wore a clean shirt?

Edited to apologise for using the wrong person's quote 🙄

Scabbyhands · 03/05/2026 14:37

You only change your towels and bedding once a month?

Nope. I have multiple sets. Towels and bedding can do a week each easily and I’ve only one double bed to change.

Well I’m not going to wear dirty clothes and not are my children so machine or hand washed that’s how much washing we have.

Amba1998 · 03/05/2026 20:47

Well it was 2.5 loads so not that wild

Wheras I have probably 7-8 loads a week.
so it really would be jaw dropping if I washed dried and ironed in one day

Skippydoodle · 03/05/2026 20:54

I wish! I have a home plus 2 holiday lets, sleeping 12 (mostly 2 night stays) so average around 25 washes per week 😊 I get everything done in a day. Just have to be organised.

Getting my eco credits in 😅 We also don’t fly anywhere 😇 and we grow fruit and veg. Just to rub my own halo some more 🤣🤣

🤣 Brilliant!

I have never owned a car. How about that, then??

Well, nothing would happen obviously. It’s just that they would be a bit grubby.
Laundry is my chosen domestic high standard.
I’m grubby as hell in other ways. I must clean the cutlery drawer on the bank holiday tomorrow as it shocks me every time I open it……

I don’t drive either never had a driving license 😅 I wouldn’t be safe on the roads lol

Foodstore1 · 03/05/2026 21:09

More like one a day for us. DC is outside everyday after school.

Kid‘s clothes with grass stains and mud
Sports kit
Our general stuff
Delicates/whites
Towels on a hot wash
Bedding.

Mostly air dry at least

Well she is totally mad IMO because she is presumably using her dryer a lot which is costing a small fortune

this time of year I hang out everything. Yes that means some days are unsuitable but most are. Other stuff gets hung up in the airing cupboard. I’ve got a dryer and used it twice this year so far.

she is spending all day doing a rather tedious chore. Far more normal to spend a bit of time sporting it out throughout the week than basically devote a whole day off to it when you could be doing something more interesting instead

eta 2.5 loads is not very much. I can wash and dry that when weather is good. Most of us deal with far more!

Exactly, pop wash on delay so it is ready for getting up, hang on line, go to work. What a waste of a day!

vladimirVsvolodymr · 03/05/2026 21:21

Family of 5. Two very sporty kids, I teen, I tween. We wash every second to third day. I put on the wash to finish at 5am when I get up, spin it again for 15 mins. Put dryer stuff in the dryer and non dryer on the clothes horse. Dryer is on at 5:30, DH leaves home at 8:30 and by then dryer is finished. My cheap electricity finishes at 8am, and I fold and put the clothes away when I get home whilst watching tv. We have on average 4 loads a week. We use the dryer always as we suffer from hayfever and use an air purifier inside in the summer. Laundry is so easy these days 😂

BooBooDoodle · 03/05/2026 21:41

2 loads a day and 3-4 at weekends. Don’t get it unless her family repel dirt and smells!

take10yearsofmylife · 03/05/2026 21:42

Laundries are effortless until you have to iron them!

IfyouStealMySunshine · 03/05/2026 21:46

I can only imagine someone doing 2.5 loads a week lives alone - any more than one person them or house must smell. Or no one in the house does any exercise.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/05/2026 21:49

MayDaySunshinePlease · 03/05/2026 14:38

I do one towel wash a week.

3 bath towels, a bath mat, about 4 bathroom hand towels.

7kg machine, that's a full load (without over filling)

I've just put a towel wash on: 2 x bath sheets, 1 x bath towel, 4 x hand towels, 2 x bath mats, another mat and a couple of cleaning cloths. That's a full load in a 10kg machine.

How anybody thinks a towel wash doesn't fill a machine, I'm not sure!

Namechangee11 · 03/05/2026 21:50

Mine is 8-10 a week..... I cannot even imagine a life with 2.5 loads a week!!

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 03/05/2026 23:10

Loading and unloading a washer is no big deal. Neither is drying if you have a tumble dryer. The real.killer for me would be ironing and putting things away

It also depends on how often you wash your clothes, towels, bedding etc.

Each to their own!

Saturday eas wall to wall sunshine. Why do you think she wasn't hanging it out?

PurplishGemstones · 03/05/2026 23:30

I'd say the same about my Bosch and it's half the price of a Miele

I got a Bosch 6 months ago and it's the best machine I've had.
