AIBU to be amazed my friend does all her laundry in one day?

I called over to a friend yesterday evening with my dc. She was just coming down the stairs with an empty laundry basket when she answered the door.
she took a few minutes to answer the door so as she opened the door, she apologised and said she was putting away the laundry.
I jokingly said oh no bother I must put mine away, It’s been sitting there all week I need to clear the basket for the next lot.
she then proceeded to tell me she does ALL her laundry on a Saturday- washes, dries, irons and puts away! IN ONE DAY! I nearly fell to the floor. She said she had two and a half loads.
I was even more baffled because she couldn’t have us round until 7ish because she had a crazy busy day. Her dd had training, her ds had a friend over for a playdate, her dd then had an appointment in the afternoon. Then she had to collect her dh from the train station. My mind is blown! She fits her laundry in between doing all of this…and she irons! 😅 where am I going wrong?

DD very sporty but her gear didn't bulk out the washing machine!

So can you still “not get my head around” people doing lots of washing when we have more than 1 child who doesn’t break a sweat in PE and her sports gear is very light?

SonnyandChair · Today 12:03

my husband does all the washing in my house

Same! Women like to think their partners are useless but really it's just women enabling men.

I'm old enough to remember my mum doing all the washing on a Monday. And probably ironing it all too as she watched Coronation Street.lol.
All the laundry for 6 people in a non automatic washer.

I wonder how Monday came to be washing day!

happysunr1se · Today 12:06

What you need to do is lower your standards!

For eg I only do 2/3 loads a week, I don't buy white clothes so everything goes in together.

When I exercise I don't have special clothing I just continue to wear the same outfit and then wash them after ( I have a rower and bike at home).

I don't wash towels after every shower
I don't change bedclothes every day
We don't change PJ's everyday

My DD and DH don't have any sports clubs so there's no extra washing from that.

As a family we have a neater style habit and eat at table for all meals/snacks so there's minimal clothing stains and no spillages on cushion covers etc. no tea or breakfast in bedrooms.
We don't use a tablecloth or napkins.

There's probably habits you can change to reduce the amount of laundry you create.

How do you get everything washed and dried in one day? Even with two clothes lines and a sunny day in the summer I couldn't get it all done.

Last Saturday was a lovely sunny windy day here so I got my two loads washed and dried outside. They were all inside by 5 o’clock then I did my ironing and put it away.🙌

happysunr1se · Today 12:08

Also I run the washing machine on its timer over night on economy 7 so can hang it up before work

We are a family of 4 and I do two loads a day at least. Sometimes one member of the family wears per day: pyjamas, school uniform, swimming kit, football kit and Beavers uniform.

I bet they don’t do grassroots sports as players or coaches. In the winter my dc can wear 20 items of clothing for one training session.

Don't tell me the pyjamas are single-use. 🙈 Also, do you wash trousers and skirts after one use??

And you don't need to launder swimsuits/trunks after every use. Just rinse them in cold water to get the chlorine out, in order to make them last longer.

PurplishGemstones · Today 12:09

No. MOst people who are doing mindboggling amounts of laundry are making work for themselves by washing things which aren't actually dirty

My mil always tells me I wash too much, but it appears I don't wash things half as much as reported on here!

I do similar once a month as it's just me alone these days.

I have three loads a month to do (clothes, towels, bedding) and have colour coded baskets for each. They all tend to fill on the same day so I get them all washed and dried in one go and then put it away so I don't need to think about it for another month. You just need to start first thing and set timers to remind you something's done, and motivate yourself to do it immediately otherwise you run out of time.

I don't buy anything that would need ironing though. I can see how a family could easily do the same with once a week.

Even by myself I do at least 2 a week and I don’t wash stuff that isn’t dirty

weekly - at least 7 knickers and socks, flannels, 2 towels, kitchen towels, bedding, maybe a throw or blanket, couple of pairs of pjs, bath mats
then I’ve got work clothing, weekend clothing and gym clothing
I wash the mattress and pillow protectors monthly too

I need to stop reading this thread for my blood pressure. So before I depart I’ll just say it one more time..OPs friend had 2.5 loads to do that day .Not every week.

Oh my god it’s almost like we all live differently…funny thought isn’t it.

  1. I wouldn’t dream of putting my washing on while the house is asleep.
  2. As I said my washing machine takes 1.5hours min.
  3. I am getting ready for work and making breakfast/lunches In the morning (no school dinners here)
  4. I live in Ireland by the sea, the weather cannot be trusted most of the year.
so yep it’s not something that I want to make possible. It wouldn’t help me anyway. 2 loads on a Saturday isn’t back breaking for me.

Yeah & it's almost like some of us like clean clothes & bedding.

I don't agree. Laundry is a massive fucking ball ache and takes ages.

We are a family of five and all of us do sports four nights out of seven, so the washing is endless. Gym kits, karate gi, football kits, netball kits, cycling gear, plus PE kits, plus all the usual laundry, means I have to do a load a day. I don't have a tumble dryer, so hanging it all out takes ages - in particular all the fiddly underwear and socks, cycling gloves, shin pad sleeves, running belts. Such a faff. Then once it's dry, folding it all up and putting it away so you can hang out the next lot.

Sticking it in the machine and hitting the 'on' button is only about 10% of the overall job.

But does ALL that stuff need to be washed after one use? Running belts and cycling gloves? And how dirty does a kid's karate kit get in one session? And do you need to wash a netball skirt/tracksuit bottoms after one use?

Butterme · Today 12:15

I would prefer to do this but don’t have enough space to dry anything.

My clothes can take a couple of days to fully dry and so I’ll typically do it on a Sunday and Wednesday to ensure there is enough room to dry everything.

I don’t see how she’s managing to dry everything so quickly - surely she’s not drying it all in a tumble dryer!

Youcancallmeirrelevant · Today 12:16

4 loads a week here, 1 for each child, 1 for me and 1 for bedding/towels. I rotate whose bedding gets washed so only 1 set to go in, and there's only 3 towels a week plus a few tea towels.
First load goes on Friday eve, then out on the line Saturday morning and second load goes in, repeat for 2nd and 3rd loads. Use inside heated airer if needed for space, iron anything that needs ironing as it comes off the line. And put all away Saturday eve/Sunday morning

Looked in to it how? Because in my looking in to it, a well maintained, relatively new appliance isn’t any more of a risk than any other electrical appliance.

Fire service mainly.

I just do laundry as and when I can be arsed. The thought of spending a whole day focusing on laundry sounds very boring.

You don't "focus on laundry" though. You put a load in the washing machine overnight so you hang it up to dry when you get up and are doing morning jobs and then you put a 2nd load on. 15 minutes. you then get on with your morning. By lunchtime (or if you notice earlier) the 2nd load will be finished, so you bring in the first load, fold it up, hang out the 2nd load and put a 3rd load on. 25 minutes. By dinner time (or if you notice earlier) the 3rd load is finished, so you bring in the 2nd load, hand out the 3rd load and put the 4th load on. That then gets hung out (or inside dryer) before you go to bed.
So you've spent an hour(ish) in total doing the washing spread out across the day, in conjunction with other jobs you would be doing anyway.
And then the laundry is done for the week, so you don't have to constantly think about it across the rest of the week.

(I'm assuming a good drying day here, or it wouldn't be so many loads).

That reads to me that the OP's friend does do all of her laundry once a week on a Saturday, wether it's 1 load or 7, how could it mean anything else? I think people are commenting on both the frequency and amount of laundry they personally do so lots of crossed wires on the thread now.

So a white t shirt would go in with a red dress?

What I'm getting from this thread is that many people use things as single-use when they shouldn't be. The only things that are single-use for me are knickers, socks, and tops. Also, WFH in the winter means not much sweating so I might re-wear some tops once. I wear a bra for about three days, pyjamas for a week, jeans and trousers for at least a week, and skirts are lucky if they see a washing machine once a month! Towels and bedding are also a week. Swimsuits not very often, although I rinse the chlorine out with fresh water. Gym kit tops are single-use, and gym bottoms maybe 2-3 uses.

PEOPLE ARE DOING TOO MUCH WASHING!!!

MayDaySunshinePlease · Today 12:23

Kitchenbattle · Today 10:58

Yeah but I don’t have a billion washes a week so I don’t have the need. I wake at 6:30, I get myself ready, I wake my dc at 7 and then we have brekkie and make lunches etc. we leave at 7:30 and 8 depending on what’s going on. My washing machine takes an hour and a half…I’m not adding another factor to my morning for no reason.

Whatever works for you.

i don't even remember if it was you or someone else saud it wasn't possible to do
laundry in the week because 'she works'. that's just not true she/you may choose not to, but many of us do (well 'did' until I became disabled & currently not working)

100% agree with this! We’re a family of 6, multiple outdoor sports activities and I don’t need to do a clothes wash every day even with only an average sized washing machine.
