AIBU to be amazed my friend does all her laundry in one day?

I called over to a friend yesterday evening with my dc. She was just coming down the stairs with an empty laundry basket when she answered the door.
she took a few minutes to answer the door so as she opened the door, she apologised and said she was putting away the laundry.
I jokingly said oh no bother I must put mine away, It’s been sitting there all week I need to clear the basket for the next lot.
she then proceeded to tell me she does ALL her laundry on a Saturday- washes, dries, irons and puts away! IN ONE DAY! I nearly fell to the floor. She said she had two and a half loads.
I was even more baffled because she couldn’t have us round until 7ish because she had a crazy busy day. Her dd had training, her ds had a friend over for a playdate, her dd then had an appointment in the afternoon. Then she had to collect her dh from the train station. My mind is blown! She fits her laundry in between doing all of this…and she irons! 😅 where am I going wrong?

Nah this must be fake. It isn’t possible to put washing away on the same day it’s dried, I actually think it’s illegal to wait any fewer than 5 days.

🤣🤣🤣 down with this sort of thing! It’s the law to wait until one of the arm chairs is overflowing with clean and dry clothes!

I just do laundry as and when I can be arsed. The thought of spending a whole day focusing on laundry sounds very boring.

Exactly how I feel. I'm not going to work - or anywhere really, in creased and crumpled clothing.
Maybe people avoid ironing by only wearing polyester, and clothes like leggings?

No I'm just very mindful of not over loading the washing machine, taking clothes out of the machine as soon as it stops & hanging them up carefully on the line then when dry putting them straight on hangers or folding them properly to put away.

i used to iron school uniform shirts & other bits when the kids were here.

because if my disability I do wear a lot of leggings, but NO polyester 🤣

Looked in to it how? Because in my looking in to it, a well maintained, relatively new appliance isn’t any more of a risk than any other electrical appliance.

Fridge freezers are as much of a risk as washing machines and nobody is turning those off when they leave the house.

Rocket surgery 🤣 Do you mean rocket science?

It's a joke. Like "does the pope shit in the woods".

Franjipanl8r · Today 11:48

Maybe they do no sports, we do 2 loads of washing a week just on gym kit and sports kit plus giving the swimming kit a rinse.

Rocket surgery is a well known deliberate mixed metaphor. It's been used on the interwebs for years.

One benefit of.our bath sheets is i am militant on them not being washed frequently and I regularly have words with the dc if they are sneaking towels into the washing basket. Its a huge towel. You are clean when you get out of the shower. The bathroom is well ventilated and we have a heated towel.dryer that goes on for a couple of hours morning and night. Those bloody towels can be used for weeks! 🤣. Its the one redemption!

Weeks ewww nope weekly is my limit.

I do mine in one day, I WFH so once every hour or so I leave my desk to stretch my legs & load/unload machines as required. I'm not sitting in front of them being hypnotized by watching my knickers go round and round

Kitchenbattle · Today 11:50

For shits and giggles, I went and got all the laundry in my house after I did all my laundry yesterday. This is what we have. Neither pile warrants putting on a wash…I really don’t understand how families of 4 are creating 2.5 loads A DAY!!

I do at least a load a day. Usually 2, so no way I could get it all done in a day. I don’t iron

Maybe she is of the "wash it when it's dirty" approach rather than wash it just because it has been worn for a short time. Or is happy to use towels for a week rather than washing every day.

Who doesn't use towels for a week??? You wash towels every day?? I do replace hand towels every three days. But are you saying that your towels are basically single-use???

I do roughly 4 loads a week as a single person, how is someone with kids managing 2?!
I don't have a dryer so although at this time of year I can get a wash dried in a day out on a line, I can't generally get more done as I just can't get it dried to make space for the next lot.

You probably have a small washing machine if you're a single person.

There are currently 3 adults in my house. I washed all the dark stuff yesterday and will do all the lights today. Bedding and towels and other miscellaneous bits (tea towels, dish cloths, bath mats etc) get done mid week. Probably 3 loads of these a fortnight. That's 3.5 loads a week for 3 people. When DD comes home from university we will probably go up to 4 loads a week.

Unless you are changing your bedding multiple times a week, or wearing and 4 separate outfits in a day and washing after each wear, you wouldn't get to 4 loads a week for a single person with our washing machine.

I was using a certain amount of hyperbole! :)

Yes, I aim for weekly. Although what actually happens is the children leave the old towels still hanging up and bring up new ones and so we do it fortnightly, but it's about 8 towels by then! Grin

sittingonabeach · Today 11:51

@BoredZelda most fire services recommend you don’t run washing machines, dryers or dishwashers overnight or when out of the house. Obviously fridges and freezers have to be run constantly

Many fires are due to electrical faults. I’m guessing most people don’t have their electrics and electrical goods serviced on a regular basis. Apart from our boiler we don’t (and that is actually gas!)

We have just had some electrical work done and we were advised to upgrade our fuse box, and it’s not that old a house. If we hadn’t had the work done it would never have occurred to us to have it upgraded and checked

I find people who struggle with laundry absolutely baffling.

but then I think I'm just organised and they’re not.
we have multiple laundry baskets so clothes get sorted into whites, colours, heavy duty workwear etc at removal. Means it’s easy to grab a particular basket and load the washer without needing to ‘sort it’.

i load the washer on say a Friday night and set it to start and finish by let’s say 07:30 on the Saturday. Out it goes onto the line, clothes horse or dryer and in goes another load.

generally the 1st load is dry by the time the 2nd load is done and it’s swapped out.
we don’t iron and things are folded or hung carefully and put straight into drawers or the wardrobe.

job done. Probably takes a total of 20 mins of my time to do.

Sounds like you live in a big house though. We’re in a 3 bed London semi and I don’t have space for any more than the two laundry hampers we already have (one for kids, one for me and DH).

Also, we don’t have a utility room or a spare bedroom. There’s a washing machine under the counter in our kitchen and the heated airer and dehumidifier are permanently in mine and DH’s bedroom. I could obviously get everything done a lot quicker if I was just transferring from washer to dryer and hitting a button. But I have to hang each individual sodding item out by hand, or peg it out on the line. And then the same in reverse, then fold and put away. It just takes time.

I actually have to be very organised in my approach because of the lack of space otherwise we end up with clothes drying all over the place and massive piles of clean laundry everywhere.

Im so jealous of my friend who has a big utility room. She just has separate baskets on the counter for each family member and everyone’s dry clothes go in their respect baskets and just stay there until someone needs something. I bet she would be posting on here saying laundry is a piece of piss.

Laundry hampers go in the bedrooms here.

I do most of ours on a Sunday, it's usually about 5/6 loads, I don't iron though and sometimes the folding and putting away gets left until Monday.

In the same. At a minimum a load a day and I’ve a 10kg machine. Find it’s less l in the summer as lighter clothes etc but in winter time it’s definitely 10 maybe more depending. Because as well as day to day to day clothes, towels and bedding, also have the uniforms, PE kits, sports clothes etc.

Also I couldn’t abide the thought of leaving damp towels mouldering for up to a week waiting to be washed

My towels get washed at least once a week
(they get done on a 'good drying day' not on set days)

bur WHY would towels ever be left 'festering' mine now go in the heated towel rail after a shower (which is cold in summer as it comes on with the heating) or sometimes I put them
in the line for a blow.

As a child they either went on hooks in the airing cupboard or over the bannister. (Different houses)

various other arrangement when there were too many of us for the heated towel rail, but always somewhere fir them to dry out properly.

Schools are despicably dirty places and trousers/skirts cannot be reworn

What nonsense!

At DD's school, PE was usually so tame, they never worked up a sweat.

That’s a bit shit @SonnyandChair

We just have one laundry hamper for all of us in the bathroom. Nothing is separated for washing though, so it’s just easy to grab it each morning and chuck it all in the washing machine.

Changing pyjamas every day ffs . . .

I don’t actually wash pyjamas every day, I was explaining how washing builds up when you wear multiple outfits every day, but if that’s all you’ve taken from my post and still made a rude comment then… lovely!
