I'm voting Labour .
Our local Labour councillors have done a decent job for the last few years so I don't feel the need to change.
I think Reform will make huge gains in my city, all I hear is " stop the boats" . I wish people would realise that city councillors have no powers over immigration and just concentrate local issues!

Firetreev · 02/05/2026 09:31

Sadly, they probably are. However, PLEASE remember these elections are about who are going to run YOUR local services. It's not just a protest vote. If you want to vote Reform only as a protest vote, look at Reform run Councils and the utter misogynistic shambles they have been. Every one has increased council tax and been mired in scandal in one way or another. If you genuinely like Reform, fair enough you deserve the shambolic service you will receive. But if it's only to give Labour a kicking, perhaps think twice as you'll be giving yourself and the most vulnerable people in your council area a kicking too.

keepswimming38 · 02/05/2026 07:44

Reform will probably do quite well unfortunately seeing as their average voter age is 61 so they have time on their hands to vote.

Wondering why 61 year olds who are probably working, looking after elderly parents and providing childcare for grandchildren would have more time to vote than the next woman.

Edited to add. I'm 61 and would sooner eat my gardening shoes than vote Reform.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/05/2026 09:31

And Reform will be toast once people get to see their bullshit in action locally -

Monty36 · 02/05/2026 09:32

If Rayner returns it will be a disaster for Labour. She is complete Marmite for voters. And that level of division does not relate into votes come a general election. Nor, does it bode well optics wise that you get rid of someone for failing, then oh, two minutes later all is forgiven.

Burnham on the other hand is interesting. And would be a challenge to opposition. A good speaker. Can manage a place like Manchester.

But Rayner. No.

DierdreDaphne · 02/05/2026 09:33

Olderkids · 02/05/2026 08:05

Well they certainly couldn’t do any worse!
I don’t think anyone on the international stage has respect for Starmer. You can see how he is sidelined when they meet. Labour has turned our country into a laughing stock. I am gutted that we have no election in our area so I cannot contribute to his demise.

That was Brexit followed by Johnson and Liz Truss. Labour have not made things particularly better and I share much of the dislike for Starmer, but the previous Tory administrations did the really spectacular damage.

DierdreDaphne · 02/05/2026 09:33

..turning the country into a laughing stock I mean

Firetreev · 02/05/2026 09:34

Crikeyalmighty · 02/05/2026 09:31

This is the only silver lining. It gives people time to see what utter clowns and toerags they actually are prior to the next general elections. They're clowns, racists, failed Tories and imbeciles. The track records of current Reform councils are shambolic.

MsGreying · 02/05/2026 09:34

Non labour local authorities have real problems as they are very unionised.
You can take the left out of the councillors but not the council.

So Labour aren’t going to do badly, it’s all the bots stirring things up.

GirlsInGreen · 02/05/2026 09:35

I am in Birmingham and absolutely dreading whats coming.
Labour are done here & snakeoil salesmen to the left & right abound.
We are a city on the edge of utter catastrophe, whatever happens.
I'm really fearful for those who rely on public services (all of us) but in particular social & childrens services. We are gutted as it is.
Labour fucked the city for sure but I feel sick at what comes next.

WildGarden · 02/05/2026 09:35

Nicewoman · 02/05/2026 08:21

Angelor Raynor is desperate to become Prime Minister, and Andy Burnham already has Labour MPs ready to give up their seats for him.

Is there any reason you keep spelling politician's names incorrectly?

We've had West and now Angelor Raynor.

keepswimming38 · 02/05/2026 09:36

@WildGardenbecause they still have more flexibility to pop into their local polling station than a 38 year old trapped in an office all day then going to pick up their kids after work. It’s not rocket science!

Frankenpug23 · 02/05/2026 09:37

Be careful what you wish for, I live in a reform area…. they lack any real experience, have poor understanding of health and social care…. and have just put our council tax up significantly more than the labour/ conservative predecessors.

There is no current political alternative to Labour…. their best bet is to let Burnham back in and push him into contesting for leadership. Possibly with Streeting and Rayner supporting.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 02/05/2026 09:38

I think Labour will do very badly in the local elections, yes.

I'm extremely concerned about who we will get in their place. A combination of Reform and Green, I'm guessing. I won't be cracking open the champagne.

ConcernedForWales · 02/05/2026 09:39

Upstartled · 02/05/2026 09:30

It's highly unlikely that the Tories will lose 1000 seats. But the reason why these losses will be significant to Labour is because many of these seats which are vulnerable were taken for granted a heart beat ago. It speaks to a loss of the confidence in the party generally. That, and Labour will be wiping the sweat off their collective brow if they only lose 1000 seats at this point.

I am not downplaying the disaster that is facing Labour. As per my username I am in Wales and it is going to be slaughter here for Labour.

But I have definitely seen a prediction that the Conservatives lose 1,000+ seats. Will try to find it again.

PonyPatter44 · 02/05/2026 09:40

I'd still like someone - anyone, really, - to tell me how they think voting Reform will improve the lives of ordinary British people. Noone can tell me.

AnticsNShenanigans · 02/05/2026 09:41

Our local Labour councillors are brilliant, dedicated and have made real, positive change in my area (outer London), so I’ll be voting for them regardless of my dissatisfaction with the government.

The local Tories are and have always been a hideous bunch. Lib Dems are OK, but never seem to make any ground. Nobody had heard of the Reform or Green candidates until about 2 weeks ago and they have done fuck all for the area, so they can all piss off back under their rocks after this election. Chancers.

Upstartled · 02/05/2026 09:42

This is why we have a postal voting option. There are some people who are disenfranchised because of circumstances, people who were caught out because they ended up in emergency care on voting day and such like but painting yourself as a victim to the voting system because you are busy with work and kids is a mighty stretch.

It’s a bit difficult to do the usual bots on mn stuff when the local elections will show otherwise. Unless you think Labour will do well.

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 02/05/2026 09:43

TheyGrewUp · 02/05/2026 08:03

I have no truck with the wider labour party and consider them an unmanageable bunch of loons who never should have been voted into power. They have unilaterally shown their true colours and have destroyed the UK economy more quickly than I anticipated. Oh how I was shot down by other MNetters when I predicted this.

Kier personally I think is pretty decent and unlike Bliar, one of his predecessors, he hasn't taken us into an illegal war, or sold the gold like Brown, oh but there's no gold to sell - they fucked that up last time.

The best result for us locally will be for the Residents' Association to be trounced. There is something particularly nasty about standing on an independent ticket to hide your left wing core.

I agree. They are ungovernable as a party. Whoever takes over ( especially Wes Streeting Streeting or Shabana Mahmoud) will face the same endless backbench battles that Starmer has had. Burnham isn't even an MP so he won't be able to take over. Even if he does, who knows which Burnham he will be- the arch Blairite, the arch Brownie or the arch Corbynite? He will have to make his own decisions once he's got his wish. I suspect he will go back to his Centrist roots which again will cause uproar in the CLP and on the backbenches. Rayner or no Rayner.I voted for them thinking this was no longer true. Unfortunately I have been proven wrong.

Maray1967 · 02/05/2026 08:07

No elections here. Most of the Merseyside Councils aren’t up for election this year.

Liverpool isn't but Sefton is all out and most other councils are 1/3 seats. I think Labour/Lib Dem are in for a shock and a lot of seats will turn Reform.

StephQ1 · 02/05/2026 09:47

Thankfully I’ve never lived in an area with a Labour MP or councillor. They have never been anywhere near winning seats however if that ever changed I’d vote whichever way was needed to keep them out.

Pearl69 · 02/05/2026 09:47

ParadiseIsNoBunker · 02/05/2026 08:37

Well, I’ll be voting Labour in my local election 🤷🏼‍♀️

Probably the same. Our long time Labour council does a pretty good job.

posters on here have short memories and are falling for the right wing press screaming (often untrue) headlines. John Majors interview is also worth a listen.

Smeuse · 02/05/2026 09:51

Who are you voting for @Nicewoman ?
