undecided. It’s not like we have a good choice.

Which party will get Labour out where you live? I assume you will vote for them??

Nicewoman · 02/05/2026 08:05

West Streeting will make a move

God if you think Keir is slimey, Wes is far worse. Not a single word comes out of his mouth that isn’t a lie.

AImportantMermaid · 02/05/2026 10:34

The party in power almost always takes a bit of a hammering in the mid term locals, particularly if they’ve ‘over elected’ at the general. I guess the question is how bad is ‘too bad’. Tell you what though, if it’s bad enough that Burnham eventually becomes PM I’d vote for him in a heartbeat. He has been a phenomenal mayor for Manchester. A shining example of what a directly elected mayor can be.

Realitybitesyerbum · 02/05/2026 02:42

Me too. If I could get a ticket I’d go to the count to watch their real time downfall.

The only question is how many council.seats they lose.

My guess is 1,700. So many good local councillors losing their seats because of idiocy, dishonesty and hypocrisy in the cabinet.

Stnam · 02/05/2026 10:35

I hope conservatives get back control of our council. I think they are in with a pretty good chance as reform have hardly any support here and I don't think labour will get much of a turnout.

ProudAmberTurtle · 02/05/2026 10:35

Sounds like from the papers today that both Streeting and Burnham are making a move and are competing to be installed as PM before the summer break

Moll2020 · 02/05/2026 10:36

Labour will be finished in Wales

Burnham has one hell of a hill to climb to make that work. I doubt the timings would even allow it.

Eskarina1 · 02/05/2026 10:36

I'm very much hoping Reform win several Councils. The more they have to actually deliver, the less people will vote for them in the GE in 3 years time.

How anyone can have lived through the last 15 years of politics and think Labour will be finished by local election protest voting when they have a strong majority in Parliament and by law 3 years until the next General Election is beyond me. They don't even have any reason to get Starmer out, because they have time to choose the right successor and probably nearer the General Election for the "bounce". Public opinion does not need to matter to them at this point.

MyFellowScroller · 02/05/2026 10:39

Afterwards they will be fighting for power. I think Red Ed Miliband will get support.. He is not tainted by Mandelson, is Left wing and has experience of being close to power.
If more comes out about the story of Angie being falling over drunk in Westminster it will be difficult to support her.

Lou7171 · 02/05/2026 10:40

I'm voting Labour 🙂

pinotnow · 02/05/2026 10:41

Well if it's Reform you're voting for they've been an absolute shambles here. Council tax up 4%, half-mast flags installed all over the place and potholes still as prevalent as ever and not a lot else to see. The Greens are no better as far as I can see and just as extreme the other way.

Labour will do badly I suppose as they inherited an absolute shit-show (and yes, the Tories kept on about their inheritance right up until the 2015 election and probably beyond, even though it was mainly the result of the global financial crash of 2008) and are operating in a ridiculously hostile media environment. I just hope they will have the sense not to oust Starmer as that will lead to more chaos and would be incredibly irresponsible of the party.

To be honest, I am sick of Labour backbenchers doing all they can to undermine the government and I wish they would stfu and show some loyalty and maturity. Most of the ministers I feel have done a good job but I suppose like the Tories the party has some more extreme and less sensible people in the background who stir up shit all the time. Anyone who thinks that if Starmer went Rayner/Streeting/Burnham/whoever would suddenly be able to transform the country and the press would give them a fair shot at it is living in cloud cuckoo land. The stories will already be lined up to release on day one of any new premiership that transpired.

Labour will still be in control until 2029 but the last thing the country needs is for the party to focus on a leadership election rather than running the country.

WildGarden · 02/05/2026 10:42

This is an interesting summary of how Reform councils are doing so far.

"Reform intended to slash council tax, fix potholes, and cut council waste by emulating Elon Musk’s ‘DOGE’ drive in Donald Trump’s White House. Yet even in these areas, our analysis shows it frequently fell short on its promises.

Instead, Reform raised taxes in every council where it holds or shares power. Potholes continue to cause accidents and damage, and councillors’ struggles over where to make promised savings have put much-loved local services at risk of closure.

For some Reform councillors, the broken promises were too much. The party has lost more than 70 of its elected local politicians in the space of a year"

Broken promises, rising taxes: Inside Reform UK’s first year in power

Reform has run councils for a year. As local elections near, we ask: how has the party performed in power?

At their worst, the tories lost 500 council seats. If Labour lose double that or more, I don't think Starmer could claim to represent the people or have the popular vote anymore. Even he would know he was no asset and the party would be looking to replace him pretty quickly so a new leader could get into their stride before a GE.

Cornflakes44 · 02/05/2026 10:47

Well then what? Reform? The Greens? You think Labour is bad then let’s see what those twats do. Honestly the glee over the first left wing government we’ve had in years not performing miracles in their first two years is insane. Labour is the only credible alternative to the racist alt right which is about to take over many councils in this country and completely destroy any community cohesion we have left.

Albertroad · 02/05/2026 10:47

keepswimming38 · 02/05/2026 07:44

Reform will probably do quite well unfortunately seeing as their average voter age is 61 so they have time on their hands to vote.

Noone else has time to vote? Oh please.

Labour will be finished in Wales

That’s probably the most important outcome of these elections, and Starmer’s farewell card. Losing 1500+ seats in England would be bad enough, but losing Wales is a death knell for him.

Scotland might have been better for Labour, except for Starmer and Miliband, but a bad result there is really just a re-run of their troubles from years ago.

WildGarden · 02/05/2026 10:49

Nicewoman · 02/05/2026 08:05

West Streeting will make a move

Most interestingly the Daily Mail have this spelling mistake in one of their headlines today.

"Starmer enters the endgame: West Streeting 'has enough MPs to challenge for leadership' as Andy Burnham plots return to Westminster 'within weeks'"

It's almost as though somebody has made a typo on the general 'anti Labour' propaganda release for today.

pinotnow · 02/05/2026 10:52

Also, I don't know much about this, but I'm not sure how much you can learn from how many seats they lose as isn't this dependant on how many they had in the first place? So comparing it to previous losses could be a little misleading. That doesn't change the fact that they'll almost certainly do very badly, I know.

Agree on Wales especially as a poll had them as only above the Lib Dems, so near last.

CotswoldsCamilla · 02/05/2026 10:55

I hope you’re right OP but I’m not convinced. London loves Labour. Wandsworth will be an interesting one. They were Tory run for about 24 years and Labour for the last 8 or so, a Brexit punishment from an electorate which was 75% or so Remain.
Richmond will be another interesting one as they’re historically Conservative. Buy ultimately, inner London will always vote for the Labour Party.

ConcernedForWales · 02/05/2026 10:56

Moll2020 · 02/05/2026 10:36

Labour will be finished in Wales

They will probably still be in government, thiugh. The D'Hont system means coalitions are inevitable. Likely outcome is Plaid/Labour/Green coalition. Maybe even Lib Dem too! Reform/Tory probably won't have enough seats between them.

It is all bum-squeakingly tight though.

tulippetals · 02/05/2026 10:57

How pathetic you all are

Albertroad · 02/05/2026 10:57

Hopefully the results will herald the downfall of Starmer...awful man.

pinotnow · 02/05/2026 10:59

What is so awful about him? I can't get my head around the vitriol that he attracts, I just can't. He hasn't been perfect and there have been missteps for sure, but I don't get attitudes like @Albertroad 's.
