Why does a politician need to be exciting.?I want serious grown ups in charge who have a track record of holding down serious, grown up jobs. I want a political party that will make unpopular choices that might fix the economy long-term. A constant merry go.round of leaders and governments weakens the ability of anyone in charge to do anything g other than the popular thing. Im not saying I support Starmer or Labour generally but I wouldn't not vote for them on the basis of 'dull'.

Absolutely agree. A 'character' leader is the last thing we need. I'm in Scotland. We've had nearly 20 years of SNP who've made a massive mess of things but will get votes again due to nationalist sentiments. Whatever you do, don't vote Reform 😬

CurlewKate · 02/05/2026 07:48

So what do you think will happen post election?

I think some people think Thursday is some sort of General Election. Probably because of Farage's Get Starmer Out campaign.

I have many issues with Starmer and will be voting Plaid Cymru, but I hope he stays on. It will piss off the right massively and that would be amusing.

WolfDaysOfMoon · 02/05/2026 08:38

I think it’s because a lot of the criticism of Labour and Starmer is at such an asinine level, with names frequently misspelled etc, that it doesn’t always look entirely genuine.

TBF when the Tories were in there were an awful lot of badly written, wild and frothing anti-Tory posts from Labour supporters. And, like some current anti-Labour posts, they promoted a lot of falsehoods.

Dollymylove · 02/05/2026 08:50

TheFirmForeheadofHarryMcGuire · 02/05/2026 07:58

Labour will be fine. They are internationally respected and that goes a long way.

Are you serious? I feel embarrassed to be British right now. We cant even defend ourselves from invaders.
We have the likes of Zack Polanski in charge of one of the political parties, we have....no actually I wonr go any further. The mention of Polanski as a serious politicians is enough to have the rest of the world laughing their heads of at us 😡

Oh, if it is in the Telegraph it MUST be true. 🙄The Guardian says there is plotting to Bring Burnham back. The Mail is suggesting Rayner is on manoeuvres.

You do understand that Labour will still be in government? If Starmer goes, what if his replacement actually turns things around, hmm? It happened with the Tories when May was ousted.

Agree. My local councillor wrote a list of social media about what she was campaigning for and what she has achieved over her year in council. Someone asked what she was doing to “stop the boats” and she had to explain she wasn’t a MP.

sunnydisaster · 02/05/2026 08:53

What do you want? Reform or Green? We are in for a big shock and it won’t be a good one.
I’ll be voting for whoever can keep Reform out of our local Council - Greens have no chance thankfully 🙏

FormerCautiousLurker · 02/05/2026 08:54

All it will do is cause uncertainty, interparty politicking and a leadership battle. We had 8 years of those before Labour. It’s a pyrrhic victory for those hating Labour (of which I am one). It will be a huge ‘bloodbath’ but we’ll be wading through the detritus for 3 more years. There will be no winners here.

HoraceCope · 02/05/2026 08:54

the rise of reform is worrying me

It’s a technique used by lots of parties’ ‘supporters’ and ‘activists’ - they’re told to get online and write like ‘grassroots voters’. The result is a flurry of asinine insults and faux errors, because that’s how these prats imagine ordinary voters to be.

Ilovegolf · 02/05/2026 08:59

Labour will face significant losses, but who will take over is anyone’s guess. Worrying times.

keepswimming38 · 02/05/2026 08:59

@Dollymylovesee I’m quite proud to be British right now. That’s how much the electorate differ. I certainly won’t feel proud if Reform do well.

Clearinguptheclutter · 02/05/2026 08:01

I agree they’ll do
badly at the locals but that’s not the same as being “toast”.
no way will there be a GE anytime soon

I fail to see how any other party can do better, apart from the Lb Dems who are doing a fairly decent job of running our council as far as I can see

I always vote Lib Dems in local elections as they are good at dealing with the small stuff and getting things done.

I just don't feel confident to vote for them in a General Election.

I wonder what will happen with the Tories. They're predicted to lose 1000+ seats. Will Kemi be walking the plank too?

StainedGlasses · 02/05/2026 09:10

keepswimming38 · 02/05/2026 07:34

Who do you want to win then?

The OP doesn't say, but I could make a guess.

summershere99 · 02/05/2026 09:11

It’s one thing to want rid of labour but who on earth is capable right now of running the country / local councils any better? Reform? A complete joke. I don’t think I’ve heard any positive stories about a reform led council. There are just no good options … I’m not sure anyone could have done any better with the world the way it is.
Our council is labour led and very well run so I’ll be voting for them.

SkipAd · 02/05/2026 09:16

These are local elections. We all know they will be used as a protest vote against the current government as they often are, but it would be really great if people would vote for the local councillors who they believe will do the best job in their local area.
I live in hope.

northernballer · 02/05/2026 09:22

We have a Reform council and honestly there is no difference from the last lot as far as I can tell, services are still shit and council tax has been hiked an extortionate amount. Plus they put all the parking up illegally then had to take it back down again so not sure they have much to offer.

Autumngirl5 · 02/05/2026 09:24

keepswimming38 · 02/05/2026 07:44

Reform will probably do quite well unfortunately seeing as their average voter age is 61 so they have time on their hands to vote.

What a silly post! Most 61 year olds are just as busy. I’m older than that and still working.

Locals are also used as another opportunity for the undiscerning to vote for the ‘traditional’ party of choice. Where I live there are three unshakeable Labour councillors. They’re worse than useless. One of them only ever appeared in the local press or social media when he got the post as Mayor so could prance about in a silly gown and chain. After the year he vanished again.

The council has been Labour forever. It’s also worse than useless.

All this is true of all parties somewhere.

So few people bother to ask themselves what’s best for the area, rather than what they’re used to.

researchers3 · 02/05/2026 09:26

Tillow4ever · 02/05/2026 07:35

Be careful what you wish for. I can’t see ANY political party in this country right now that would make people happier. I can, however, see at least one that will make things worse.

Exactly. People say they're all as bad as eachother but that's really not true.

keepswimming38 · 02/05/2026 09:28

@Autumngirl5well most 61 year olds I know have retired so there you go!

Blogswife · 02/05/2026 09:29

How can labour be finished? . It’s not a general election !!
This is local politics- you should be voting for the most appropriate candidate to sit on your council not the party !!

Upstartled · 02/05/2026 09:30

ConcernedForWales · 02/05/2026 09:09

It's highly unlikely that the Tories will lose 1000 seats. But the reason why these losses will be significant to Labour is because many of these seats which are vulnerable were taken for granted a heart beat ago. It speaks to a loss of the confidence in the party generally. That, and Labour will be wiping the sweat off their collective brow if they only lose 1000 seats at this point.

Labour are totally toast in Thursday’s elections
