AIBU to find it weird he sits on an open loo?

What it says really.
We both perch on the loo when we are giving the children a bath. I always put the lid down (like a normal person). I discovered yesterday than he is just merrily sitting on the open seat - with his trousers on, I should add - with nothing between his suspended bum and the cold depths of the U-Bend from which Anything might Emerge.
I’ve been thinking about it all day.
You think you know someone and then…

YABU: DH should carry on as he is, unafraid of bog snakes!
YANBU: 🤯 DH should put the lid down before sitting, the weirdo. Consider LTB.

I wouldn’t consider the lid strong enough to sit on

Arlanymor · 01/05/2026 15:59

Get him some life insurance so that you are properly taken care of when the bum crocodiles get him. RIP.

Legomania · 01/05/2026 16:01

Ew, I am far from fastidious but don't think my trousers would remain very clean doing that.

dontmalbeconme · 01/05/2026 16:05

You're not supposed to sit on the closed lid, they're not built to take the weight.

EatingAJacketPotato · 01/05/2026 16:07

I always sit on an open loo. I’d be worried the lid would break.

Lomonald · 01/05/2026 16:09

Sitting on the lid is treacherous you could slip and fall,😯 it could break. I wipe the seat and sit on it if need be.

WellThatsAlrightThen · 01/05/2026 16:09

Everyone knows you only sit on an open toilet with a bare bum. The threat of being pood or peed on scares away all toilet goblins!

TheJoyousHiker · 01/05/2026 16:11

I’d never sit on a toilet lid as I wouldn’t think they would take an adult weight. We had a stool in the bathroom to sit on when kids were younger and we had to do bath-time with them.

Laiste · 01/05/2026 16:13

I thought you were going to say he sits on the loo (to go to the loo) with no seat!

I did this accidentally while pissed as a fart and got stuck

Legomania · 01/05/2026 16:15

I (and more importantly my 85kg husband) have been sitting on various loo lids for 10 years of supervising bath time, and I am happy to say that neither of us has ever broken one

Grabity · 01/05/2026 16:15

Shouldn’t you be giving the loo a good scrub while the dc are in the bath, not just sitting there idling? Tut tut. Are you the type that scrolls on your phone while the kettle boils instead of quickly scrubbing the oven or polishing the fridge?

TeenLifeMum · 01/05/2026 16:17

How flimsy are people’s loo seat lids? Of course you sit on the lid.

Balloonhearts · 01/05/2026 16:21

I sit on the lid but then, I buy the solid wooden ones, not cheap plastic crap ones.

Plastic seats arent made to be sat on. Wood or other solid lids be ok.

7238SM · 01/05/2026 16:22

We recently renovated and the plumber was very insistent that people shouldn't sit on closed lids. Ours weren't cheap seats either, but I had a vision of it breaking and my bum becoming trapped in it! 😬

I have one plastic and 2 wood ones, all can take my 11st weight. The plastic one is 22 years old and I would love it to break (I hate the shape but it’s an odd loo to find one that fits). I’ve sat on it while all the dc bathed. Maybe buy better quality 🤷🏻‍♀️

FeliciaFancybottom · 01/05/2026 16:26

Do not under any circumstances show him the latest episode of The Boys!!

honeylulu · 01/05/2026 16:28

Wow i had no idea you aren't meant to sit on the lid. I've always sat on ours during kids bathtime, to trim my toenails etc. When i was pregnant and regularly dizzy (low blood pressure) i used to sit on the loo lid to clean my teeth etc. They are wooden seats though so maybe that's why I have not broken one yet!

It really wouldn't occur to me to open the lid and sit on the seat if I wasn't actually using the loo. It stays shut all the time apart from then.

DaisyChain505 · 01/05/2026 16:30

Yeah that’s just gross.

Wingedharpy · 01/05/2026 16:31

Lids with a soft close mechanism don't always respond well to being sat on.
Normal type, never had any problems.

They arent made to sit on means if it broke you couldnt complain as they arent been used at intended. Its nothing to do with quaility or price. I just dont sit on them. Baths too far away and shower door in the way of it

whichwayisuptoday · 01/05/2026 16:36

You're not supposed to sit on a toilet seat for a long time as your pelvic floor needs support.

I sit on the close toilet seat all the time and never broken one yet!
