Paris and New York for me. They don't appeal at all. Not just the amount of tourists but when I've seen of them on tv and videos they don't look attractive. I'm open to being told I'm wrong. I don't like London but would visit if I had to. I've been a few times for shows and sport etc. I always feel grubby after a visit.
I do like some cities. Favourites are Edinburgh and Barcelona. Barcelona is rife with pickpockets though so you have to be on your guard.

My ideal holiday is walking in the lakes but I still enjoy the odd city break.

So is there anywhere that is popular that doesn't appeal to you?

Yes agree about NYC. I actually cried when someone wouldn’t help me on the tube and was thoroughly unpleasant. I was at the end of my tether by then. I sat in a park crying!!

I’ve lived in London for ten years (which I loved and still do) so I’m used to cities.

Also - hugely controversial but I like LA…

maftaz · Yesterday 13:47

Benidorm and similar sardine packed roasting hot beach places, together with AI resorts.

Other than that I'll go anywhere that doesn't have the above.

I spent 5 weeks in New York one summer and ended up hating it. I guess it’s fine for a weekend visit. But I felt so claustrophobic , it was like walking through treacle, I found people unfriendly and it was pretty dirty with rubbish everywhere. I thought it would be like SATC! But with two young children it was hard work.

Don’t like Barcelona. Has a strange undercurrent.

Edited

But it's a difficult place in high summer, because of the heat and humidity and the freezing aircon indoors. To expect otherwise would be like going on holiday to the west of Ireland in February and complaining about the rain. I love NY, but I wouldn't go there voluntarily in the summer and expect to have a good time, any more than I'd go to Delhi in monsoon season! That doesn't mean these places aren't a wonderful place to be at other times.

Spidey66 · Yesterday 13:54

I’d definitely not go back to LA or Las Vegas. In fact until orange man has gone I probably won’t go back to the US!

I went on an AI once and wouldn’t repeat it either. (St Lucia…the island was ok but the resort was quite isolated and we didn’t see much of it).

Yes I know. It was definitely the wrong time of year to go. But it wasn’t just the weather so unfortunately I’ve been put right off.

I could go back for the weekend in autumn maybe and not hate it. But the love has gone .

To be fair I could appreciate the beauty of Ireland in the rain!

I just realised there was no way I could ever live in NYC. Whereas I could in other cities.

Not if you literally can't see it! There's something quite difficult about escorting a load of disappointed tourists around the Ring of Beara saying 'Well, there's a wonderful view of Hungry Hill from here, or there would be if you could see further than three feet. And over there is Dunmanus Bay. You will have to take this on trust as it's invisible...' Grin

I do want to visit Riyadh and Jeddah

Same. Saudi Arabia is on my list too.

christmaspudding43 · Yesterday 14:31

There probably aren't many places I wouldn't go if I was given a (decent) free trip. There are quite a few I can't see myself spending my own money to visit.

It's if I've visited the centre. Might be because I live next to the sea and green areas? My skin is always dirty when I've had to visit the centre. Maybe it's better now as it must have been pollution? I visited this year but just the outskirts. Previously was years ago.

I've heard people say this about London before and it's such nonsense. The air in London is way better than it was years ago! That doesn't mean that there isn't air pollution but I'd hazard a guess that it's less than in some smaller UK and other cities.

I am not a massive fan of London although there's loads to see and it doesn't have to be expensive, but the idea that it's dirty is rubbish. Litter yes like everywhere else because of disgusting litterbugs but not dirty.

I loved Las Vegas but agree with you about not going to the USA until the orange guy has gone

Having been once, Edinburgh. I hated it, very weird vibe and hugely unwelcoming. I wouldn’t go if I was paid to go!

I've been loads of times though not recently and people have always been very nice. It's a fantastic city.

I need to go back (and to Glasgow).

Australia. Everyone else seems to rave about it but it's so far down my list of places I want to visit that if I die without going i won't feel regret. With the exception of gaining understanding of the indigenous people, I dont see what culture there is there? Similarly nature outside of the great barrier reef. My ignorance is know. Also everything wants to kill you lol
I am fully aware I'm writing off a country 50 plus times larger than the UK in one fell swoop.

I’ve been once to visit some relatives and have no desire to ever go back, so I’ve written it off as well. Seem crazy right but it just didn’t give me any feelings, unlike parts of Asia I lived in and would move to in a heartbeat.

Love museums and art galleries, New York and Paris have some of the best in the world.
The architecture and bridges in Paris are beautiful I could wander around for days!

Jaddf · Yesterday 15:27

Probably OTT I'd be scared of a gunpoint robbery in NYC. And they have higher knife crime than in London.

The murder rate is declining. If it goes down by the same rate as it did last year (down 18% from 2024), it will be roughly the same rate per 100,000 inhabitants (2.6) as Toronto (1.6) and Berlin (3.2).

As with London, while you're always at risk of someone with significant MH issues running amok with a knife on the subway, most violent crime is in specific areas of the outer boroughs, and highly unlikely to involve tourists.

Jaddf · Yesterday 15:49

The NYC subway terrifies me. I feel mostly safe on the tube 95% of the time.

catbb85 · Yesterday 16:12

Paris lover here, I go every year because I love it so much but think it depends on the area; I always keep to the left bank…
Loved Tokyo, Copenhagen, Bordeaux, Vienna, Chicago and Sydney.
Didn’t love Ho Chi Minh, Barcelona, Rome.
No desire to visit LA, Miami or big US Southern cities…

It"s like when people say the Thames is dirty. No, it isn't but it's tidal and the tide stirs up the river bed so it can look dirty - it's.actually one of the cleanest rivers in Europe.

Another racist. "Doesn't feel French/like London anymore" is racist code, usually coupled with tropes like "dirty" and "violent." Reported.

Paris. Filthy smelly smoke filled city full of the rudest people imaginable. Once was too much

Always. So cowardly too. They can just be honest.

Dubai. I’m far too classy to ever visit Dubai. And I’m not very classy at all.

Jaddf · Yesterday 21:34

Fare evasion, shoplifting and general theft is super high in London. People are unwilling to pay what they owe.
