What place/city would you never visit that others love?

Paris and New York for me. They don't appeal at all. Not just the amount of tourists but when I've seen of them on tv and videos they don't look attractive. I'm open to being told I'm wrong. I don't like London but would visit if I had to. I've been a few times for shows and sport etc. I always feel grubby after a visit.
I do like some cities. Favourites are Edinburgh and Barcelona. Barcelona is rife with pickpockets though so you have to be on your guard.

My ideal holiday is walking in the lakes but I still enjoy the odd city break.

So is there anywhere that is popular that doesn't appeal to you?

The Middle East, North Africa, South Africa, New Zealand, China and India. I know I’m wiping out big sections of the world! Not saying I’d never visit, but have no particular interest at present. I’ve been to Australia twice, I think it’s overrated. Not particularly keen on the Greek Islands either. Absolutely love Italy, the US and the UK.

I would never go to Australia. Too hot in many places, plus everything seems to want to kill you - sharks, spiders and snakes. Incidentally, why is it that whenever someone who is in Australia comes on the radio, they always start boasting about how hot it is there? We're not all heat freaks, loving 35 degrees! I also have zero interest in visiting Paris. I know it's meant to be a beautiful city with loads of culture but it strikes me as being too touristy.

People always go on about “everything in Oz wants to kill you” but in a decade I never encountered a snake, a shark and never a poisonous spider. If you are in cities / city suburbs these things just aren’t a consideration.

I don’t think it is. Everywhere I travel in London feels quintessentially London / UK to me. I have lived in South East London, North London, back in South and spend time all over. All of it simply feels like “home”.

I agree. Plus people who complain about London not feeling like the UK usually mean "too many Black and Brown faces". Same seems to apply to those on these sorts of threads who write off the entire continents of Asia or Africa!

Threads like this always amaze me, so many people writing off entire continents and iconic cities based on preconceptions and prejudice or maybe just a lack of curiosity or sense of adventure. I’ve been to 130 countries (mix of travel, work and living in six different countries so far) and I can genuinely say there’s nowhere in the world I wouldn’t want to go at least once, time and money permitting, and almost all the places I’ve been to I would love to go back to (Scarbados aside 😂).

You have my chosen life - give it to me!

Africa probably has a fair few of my bucket list locations followed by Asia. Over the next few years I really want to visit: Ghana, Botswana, Namibia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Egypt, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Japan.

However my finances want me to pick 2 max and be happy with that! 😄

LaurieFairyCake · 28/04/2026 18:22

I have little interest in most of the world. I have no interest in going anywhere where animals are abused on the street for entertainment or anywhere where human rights abuses are awful.

my list I’d actually visit is VERY short : Finland, Iceland, possibly interested in Japan

To refute this. Dorothea Mackellar says it best:

The love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded lanes.
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins,
Strong love of grey-blue distance
Brown streams and soft dim skies
I know but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!

A stark white ring-barked forest
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon.
Green tangle of the brushes,
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When sick at heart, around us,
We see the cattle die -
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady, soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the Rainbow Gold,
For flood and fire and famine,
She pays us back threefold -
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze.

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land -
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand -
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

One of my favourite poems. Makes my heart sing.

Florida, particularly the theme parks. Spending a fortnight queuing and paying a fortune for the privilege to do so. No thanks!

Dubai. Just looks grim.

We were there for 4 days and had 4 incidents with dodgy men - trying to steal money, marauding through the train, continually pestering us to buy tat and following us if we said no, ditto demanding money.

The kids found it really scary. Wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

I've been to loads of other places and not had one similar incident.

Why are the people like this I ask

JMSA · 28/04/2026 21:40

I don’t fancy Blackpool. Even as a child, I disliked tacky places.
India holds no appeal for me.
I live in Edinburgh and love it here.

Bumblebeeforever · Yesterday 06:44

There’s loads of places I have absolutely zero interest in going to. Australia, South Korea (I think North Korea is a given), India, Canada, Sunderland. Theres no particular reason other than they don’t appeal to me so I’d rather spend my money and time going somewhere else.

As somebody who lives in London I find it very rude that you feel “grubby” after visiting our wonderful capital city. Maybe if you visit places with an attitude like that you get the welcome you deserve. If we’re that unclean, please feel free to not visit again and leave its beautiful parks and buildings, theatres and fascinating history for people who are less ignorant.

New York. Hated it. Biggest let down ever.

Central London (and many parts of greater) are absolutely amazing

It's if I've visited the centre. Might be because I live next to the sea and green areas? My skin is always dirty when I've had to visit the centre. Maybe it's better now as it must have been pollution? I visited this year but just the outskirts. Previously was years ago.

So you live in a field with nothing to do?

Most of the popular ones to be honest.

🤣 No I'm not far from a nice city. I'm not a hobbit.

Gorgeous weather today. I'm off for a beach walk soon.

But you don't live in a city, and it'll never have what London has

I know I never feel this in Edinburgh. But when I've had to visit Central London and cleansed my skin at night it's been so dirty. I've been to cities all over the world, lots in the US and never experienced it.

There is a reason people call it 'The Big Smoke'
Last time I was there I was only travelling through and what I blew out of my nose that night came out black 😳
Always wanted to visit Edinburgh, it looks beautiful.

Oh Edinburgh is my spiritual home. You have to go. If you aren't easily creeped out go in the vaults. You can feel the history. It's sad though but such an interesting experience. The castle is fantastic but expensive to visit. Arthur's seat is a must if you are ok mobility wise. The hop on hop off bus tour is a great way to see lots.
Oh I feel a trip coming on. I have family living there so that's a good enough reason to visit.
