AIBU to be shocked by public celebration of Michael Jackson?

Now the MJ film is out my social media feed is flooded with people doing the dances and talking about the movie etc. My local cinema is holding special events and screenings.

I personally have no doubt that he was a predatory paedophile. All the signs are there, especially how he talks about how he would never hurt a child and sharing a bed with them is the "most loving thing you can do in the world". He manipulated the world into thinking he had a "child-like persona" but was able to manage a music career worth millions... which someone who is naive would never be able to manage.

I also do not judge people who enjoy his music. It was very popular at the time, and would be associated with all types nostaligic memories. I listen to problematic artists all the time, but I don't pretend that they weren't abusive.

AIBU to be astounded that any business/media outlet would be seen dead even associating with him let alone celebrating such a horrifically abusive man.

What’s a more realistic option is that the adults who’re turning out in droves to see the film can separate the wonderful music and genius from the crimes he may have committed. It’s not a novel concept, regardless if the perpetrator has been convicted or not e.g. Polanski, Bowie, Allen, Lennon and many more. Or they don’t care.

There's no real evidence that he did anything despite years and years of investigation. Pretty much all the alleged victims stuck to one story for decades, throughout their adult life, and then suddenly changed it. There are no reliable witnesses. We'll never know for sure if he did it or not but on balance of probabilities, I'd say he didn't. The only other option is he was an absolute genius at concealing evidence and brainwashing victims and whole families, the likes of which the world has never seen before.

Does anyone else find it weird Michael had an amusement park on his property?

Perhaps the perfect excuse to lure children to his house. In my opinion, it’s a larger version of the stereotypical “want some candy/come see my puppy” child predators use to trick a child.
I hope I’m wrong.

Of course it’s weird, all of it.
Sleeping with little boys.
Sleeping with little boys after you’ve been accused of SA multiple children.
Using a surrogate when he was clearly unfit to be a parent.
Dangling a baby by the neck from a balcony in front of the world and people making excuses for it.
Owning a chimpanzee.
Building Disney world in your backyard.
He genuinely makes me want to throw up, vile vile monster of a man.

And the rest of it?????

EDITED:- Actually youre laughing hilariously but whether it was the "neck" or not I remember seeing that on the news at the time and my heart being in my mouth.

All it would have taken is for the child to wriggle the wrong way ir slip out of his grasp and it would have been a terrible tragedy. It was very high up.

Bit yeh have a good old chuckle.

What’s so funny?
Just an every day picture of a man and a baby.
If anyone else on planet earth carried on like this, the entire world would be horrified for this baby.
But awwww poor Little Peter Pan Jackson.

I don’t get it, I mean I am a fan of Take That, go to the concerts the lot since the 90s.
If any of them admitted to sleeping with children etc that would be it, gutted but yeah I wouldn’t make excuses for it, completely insane.

I can see why folk want to celebrate his music, but to think hes an innocent childlike persona is way beyond my understanding!

And while im here our friend laughing at the neck comment....maybe should take a lookie at the photo you posted

Add to this, taking tween boys to events as your+1 /best friend and holding hands with them.

Of course none of this proves hes abused boys but why would you want to look this much like a paedo if you weren't?
And what are the reasonable, innocent excuses explanation for it all....

Of course it’s a bit weird
HE was a bit weird
His whole life was weird
Having all those sleepovers was weird and foolish at best

There still is no concrete proof that he was a paedophile though and that’s after being under FBI surveillance for 10 years and a criminal trial

theodextrey · 10/05/2026 20:03

Respectfully, I am curious when people say MJ wasn’t “proven” to be a pedo.

If the abuse is being done behind closed doors with small children, it isn’t recorded, there are no other witnesses, no hospital exam then how would it ever be proven?

Especially since MJ never confessed to being a pedo.

Genuinely curious what concrete evidence people are looking for to prove he was a pedo, aside from the victims testimony.

This is the problem though isn’t it, there never will be proof, the man is dead.
This is what a lot of people are saying- me included. I just don’t know, nobody knows apart from MJ himself.

I’m not an obsessive die hard fan but I like his music, I’m going to keep listening to it.

theodextrey · 10/05/2026 20:21

Granted, when Michael Jackson was alive, if he had confessed to being a pedo, he would’ve been thrown in jail, so if the allegations were true, he had to lie to avoid jail time/further harming his legacy.

If he did it (which I think he did) then plenty of people know, such as the victims and people who witnessed it.

Sure, I was just pointing out that of the millions of adults choosing to watch the film that it’s more likely they could compartmentalise rather than be convinced he was innocent, because they don’t know. None of us do, because, as you say, there is no real evidence.

There’s a shit ton of circumstantial evidence, enough to convince me 10 times over.

Yes but nobody knows if they’re telling the truth though do they.
A jury came back with a not guilty verdict after a lengthy trial.
Obviously that doesn’t prove he never did anything to any of the accusers, but it doesn’t mean he’s definitely guilty either

No, there isn’t. The ‘evidence’ some people here have presented is risible and has been quickly rebutted.

We’ll see what comes of the Safechuck and Robson trials.

Someone who sat in court, under oath, at the age of 22 and said that a 13 yo cancer survivor was lying, kept that same line for many more years, and is now saying they made that up is very unlikely to be taken seriously at trial. It's undeniable that all the current alleged victims coming forward are prolific liars.

Grooming can do that to you.

This is my take on it. A few of the boys were paid off and the mother of one had another similar case going. I personally think (and I don’t want to think this) that he probably did do something wrong to/with some of the boys. But I think some of the accusers lied and because others accused MJ then they thought they could lie too and get money from MJ. Corey Feldman is a very strange man and an accuser.

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 10/05/2026 23:34

kkloo · 10/05/2026 23:17

Grooming can do that to you.

Grooming doesn't typically make you appear on TV shows discrediting other alleged victims, write books praising your abuser and lie under oath to defend your abuser all many years after the end of the abuse when you are an adult and continue this for decades and many years after your abuser's death. Unless he had supernatural powers, I find it unlikely.
