You're too kind 😁

Mine is the people that who absolutely refuse to go upstairs on a bus despite it being over half empty. They also refuse to move out of the way to let ppl who are happy to go upstairs have space to do so. And people who either refuse to simply walk to a free till in the self checkout until explicitly told so or are lacking the common sense/awareness to simply look for an empty till.

No different to kids though, loads of posts moaning about kids being kids

That's very true and fair point.
I suppose moaning is a great British past time .

That is acceptable. My parents are retired and only shopped on Saturday when, like you, returned from holiday.

I don’t really care what you find acceptable. I’ll shop at the weekend whenever it is convenient to me. Do you think we sit round all week twiddling our thumbs? Sad old bastards can’t possibly have busy lives, eh?

Anyone who smokes and is under the age of 50 has to be a special brand of stupid.

Even if you disregard the health issues with a "my great-uncle Peter smoked 40 a day and died in his 90s", it's bad for your skin and teeth and you look 60 when you are 35 and stink. So why do it?

And as for vaping, Yee Gods.

"Anyone who smokes and is under the age of 50 has to be a special brand of stupid."
I couldn't have put it better myself.

Notice how they always seem to recruit in less privileged towns and areas. They also tell you of all the places you'll travel, all the skills you'll learn, all the experiences you'll have... but they always seem to forget to tell you that the main purpose of the job is very frequently to kill (or threaten to kill) people and to have a very good chance of being killed yourself.

I agree that, for many, it isn't a completely freewill choice whereby they've considered all of the many and varied exciting options available to them and actively chosen that one; more that they don't have any other exciting options open to them so they think they've got nothing to lose.

In the interest of full disclosure, I’m an American army veteran.

The alternative to a volunteer force is conscription, which is unpopular and generally results in a lower quality force. And it can be a good career, at least in the U.S., particularly if you’re commissioned as an officer. It’s generally seen as a positive on your CV when you get out.

As to having “ a very good chance of being killed yourself”, only 20-25% of soldiers are considered front line war fighters. The percentage is even lower in the other services, particularly in the Air Force. And the number of deaths in service due to hostile action per year is very low, even during the post 9/11 period, when compared to the roughly 1.5 million active duty service members.

https://dcas.dmdc.osd.mil/dcas/app/summaryData/deaths/byYearManner

The number killed in accidents is consistently much higher.

While it’s certainly not for everyone, it is a good path for many.

All the drivers queuing up way before the lane closes are ridiculous.

We are meant to use all the open lanes and merge in turn.

Who decides at which arbitrary point the lane should no longer be used?

Yup, but not right up to the LAST centimetre, when you've drove at excess speed past many cars who are waiting.

Tell me you're a selfish driver without telling me you're a selfish driver.

Puffalicious · 25/04/2026 19:09

Isittimeformynapyet · 25/04/2026 18:16

Here, I found some information for you...

  • Merge in Turn: As recommended by the Highway Code (Rule 134) for congested conditions, this means using both lanes right up to the end and taking turns, which reduces congestion.

For clarity, if you have been in a queue, that would mean the conditions are congested, so the above would apply.

I hope this explains things for you and alleviates your frustration.

I have another thing that baffles me: people who are triggered by a fairly light hearted thread, & become condescending and patronising to someone they don't even know.

I, for one, ain't letting you in, no matter how you react with head-shaking or gesticulating. I'll merely smile & pop the volume of the radio up.

Majority I see are couples. I don’t think it’s a social issue.

My in laws ( a couple) does this as now they can’t drive any more and their DC work during the week so can only give them a lift on weekends in the AM so that they (the DC) have the rest of the day to get on with their stuff.

Does acknowledging the highway code make me a selfish driver? (nice fallback on a MN cliché by the way)

You've done the usual childish thing of extrapolating what someone says to ridiculous extremes ("LAST centimetre" 🙄) purely so you can dig your heels in and ignore the evidence that suggests you are mistaken.

Honestly, lighten up. It's Saturday night.

I'm baffled by your irritating driving & your inability to see another point of view. To use another MN trope, I'm ENTITLED to be baffled; I'm not imposing my bafflement on anyone else. Now please either chill out, or nip out in the car, find some roadworks & piss other people off. 😀

Barbecues, yes yes. I particularly don’t get the point of gas barbecues. I thought the whole point was to cook over fire. If you’re going to use a gas barbecues you might as well cook indoors.

I've thought exactly the same; but I suppose it depends what perspective you view it from.

If you see it as a back-to-basics caveperson-style fire cooking that you've ruined by modernising it and taken the fun, primitive simplicity out of, then absolutely; but if you see it as a versatile grill/oven that can live outside and enable the cook to be out in the sunshine and chatting with the rest of the family/invited guests, instead of being shut inside in the kitchen, it makes sense.

A bit like with caravans: you can either view them as a completely rubbish downgrade from a cottage or hotel; or as an amazing upgrade from a flimsy tent in the howling wind!

But why supermarkets? Libraries are a much better choice for a Saturday morning out!

But supermarkets are multi-purpose - and often have much easier free parking than libraries. People always need to get food in, but not everybody is that bothered about what libraries have to offer - certainly not once or more a week.

Also, libraries like you to be quiet, so it's a bit difficult to have a good old long chat!

People who pull out in front of you and then drive like a snail. Drives me mad!

You omitted a bit, it's the people who have stopped where the minor road joins the main road you're on, wait until you're much closer and only then decide to pull out and crawl along in front of you!

I'm currently baffled as to why one of my uncles has just married for the 8th time. He's a nasty sarcastic shithead with no redeeming features that i can see, and yet all of his wives have been lovely. It's not money either- he's on disability benefits and smokes and drinks.

Who looks at a man in his 80s who has been married and divorced 7 times before who smokes, and smells and shouts at people like shop workers and thinks 'That's the man for me?'.

I can never understand couples where one of them is really kind and lovely and the other is a nasty piece of work.

Physical/sexual attraction is a private matter and an individual preference which varies greatly; but surely your general demeanour and personality out in public is at least reasonably reflective of how you are in general, and thus would be at home with your spouse?

To be blunt, why wouldn't the nice person want to find somebody better, instead of settling for a miserable, unpleasant, joy-sucking curmudgeon?

But it literally is the last centimetre - well, car's length - where you are supposed to merge if there's queueing. You are doing this wrong. If it's done right, it works really smoothly.

People who stop dead at the entrance to a shop and then I did it, so I now annoy myself!

dizzydizzydizzy · 25/04/2026 20:33

deliberately throwing litter on the ground

Speakerphone calls in cafes or buses or other public places without headphones

jenzzi · 25/04/2026 20:34

People who plan to go to a supermarket and never bring any bags with them. In my weekly visit and a weekly top up shop - I see the same people and they never bring bags. Pay 40p for each bag. I could remember the regular customers in my supermarket that didn't bring bags.

Also these people who always buy bags, never re use them as a bag for shopping. They use it for rubbish.

They have more money than sense. A bin bag is cheaper, per unit and able to tie it up properly.

The bag charge was introduced on Oct 2015 in England and earlier in other parts of the UK. So primary school kids were born after the charge or still in nappies.

@squashyhat

People who park on pavements and think that because they pull their wing mirrors in or leave the hazard lights on that makes it OK.

I completely agree! There’s numerous cars near me that does this continuously. However this is the main culprit.

Check your local council and police websites. There is very likely a way of reporting this. It will be area dependent as to what action, if any, is taken, but it is awful behaviour forcing wheelchair users and small children into the road, so hopefully they'll at least get a talking to.

I have a committed anti-vaxxer friend who says that Big Pharma are lying to us. Yet she was an enthusiastic early-adopter of the weight loss jabs. It's not just covid jabs she is anti- but flu jabs, shingles etc- and she is in her late 60s with a vulnerable and disabled DH,.

TBH that baffles me a bit too. Not that I'd say anything to her about it.

I have the opposite problem. I am siiiick of being judged regarding bags every single time I go to the supermarket.

I buy bags, I take them home with my shopping, and I use them for other things. I volunteer at a food bank for a start - they always need a good supply of bags, so 90% of them go with me when I go there. I also use them for all kind of things at home.

So when I go shopping, I need to buy more bags. The shop is selling them. I want to buy them. I don't see the issue.

But the "bag ladies" as I call them, that walk around guarding the bags like rottweilers, with them clipped to their belts, will jump down my throat if I ask if they can please kindly spare me some of their wares to purchase
"YOU MUST HAVE SO MANY AT HOME BY NOW!! WHY DON' T YOU BRING THEM IN!!"

Then push in front of me and try to scan them for me like I'm going to steal them, or like I'm not capable of finding a barcode. It's awful and I dread having to go up to them and just ask for an item they are selling so I can buy it.

It's honestly such a weird bag culture that's built up in British supermarkets. Just let us purchase the goddamn bags!!

I mean I get people steal them but FFS, people steal lots of things. You don't get Scary Sharon patrolling the diary aisle with the milk clipped to her, giving you the third degree when you ask if you may please purchase her sacred milk.

They need to calm down and just let us live our lives.
