Just finished work and was making my way home when I saw 2 young girls with their parents selling few things for charity. Gave them money and one of the older girls said to me guess my name with a clue I give you something for free. Before she said clue I guessed her name like I was drawn towards her. They were all amazed. But it made me feel unsettled.

Lol I guessed Olivia because it was so popular when I had my daughter 10 years ago (my daughter isn't Olivia).

Odditea · Yesterday 03:35

I’m unsettled by your comment ‘like I was drawn towards her’. It was a fluke or it wasn’t her name. Just creepy to read anything else into it

It wasn't really her name. They would have said yes to anything you guessed.

This would be my guess too

Why do you feel unsettled? Some people look like their names, I've guessed names a couple of times.

Twice I've guessed the word for Wordle on my first turn.

Once was when it was the word HEART on the anniversary of my cardiac surgery.

Sometimes these things happen.

MsMarple · 24/04/2026 23:12

Was it Rumplestiltskin?!

Lol, that is exactly the same name that I immediately thought of MsMarple!

Otherwise, maybe the others are good actors and they just pretended it was the correct name???

I once got very close to putting the correct word down on my first attempt at a new Wordle, but of course it would have been sheer luck if I had managed it! I have just checked my stats, and out of a total of 1,208 played, I got it right on my 2nd go, 22 times on my second, and 200 on my third. Out of those 3 places I am most proud of getting the correct answer 200 times, as I think that that is when any skill I might have, really starts to count. 🫣

PS. Shall we start our own Detective Agency 😎🤓👣🫆

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · Yesterday 05:23

What was the name?

user1492757084 · Yesterday 05:32

Well done, Op!

MississippiCroc · Yesterday 05:40

Evie, Olivia or Amelia.

rockinrobins · Yesterday 05:47

Well there are a lot of children who have one of the top 10 names. So if it was a popular name, it wasn't really a low chance that you'd guess it. It doesn't mean you are psychic.

IAmBeaIDrinkTea · 24/04/2026 23:53

Seriously, what are the chances of that happening?!
Out of all what must be hundreds of thousands of combinations 😳😁

What’s better still it was during a conversation where we were talking about whether psychics were real or not. I said something along the lines of “obviously not, because it’s always ‘I’m getting a strong connection to a person with a vowel in their name’, and not ‘Dave Smith, your PIN code is 4371’” Grin

Poor Dave (not his real name) - he went absolutely grey in the face, and treated me like a leper for the rest of the time we worked together. He kept muttering “I’ve never written it down anywhere” for the rest of the day. Grin

I have no idea how I got it correct - pure coincidence, but terribly funny. I mean, for the rest of us. Not so much for Dave. I did have colleagues come up to me sporadically for the remaining years I worked there, asking me if I could tell them the sex of their unborn baby, or where to find their cat etc though.

OP are you a superstitious/religious type. You’re just inclined to think something magical has happened.
Think of all the times you’ve decided against a journey and the bus didn’t crash so you didn’t have to invent something about the universe sending you a message.
When the London buses were bombed by terrorists a friend exclaimed ‘Oh my god. I could have been on that bus!’. Because one of them was on a route she sometimes took she took the next day off sick though.

muddyford · Yesterday 06:36

I guessed both names a relation gave to her daughter. And the first name of her son.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/04/2026 23:58

You'd be wrong. It's clearly Hiroshima Twinkle.

I'd guessed Todd Unctuous.

Usethoseballsofjellyinyourhead · Yesterday 06:49

When I moved house and started doing the school run to a new school I played a game where I guessed the names of all the mums waiting in the playground in the afternoon based solely on appearance.

She looks like a Suzanne, she's Joanne, that's Imelda etc.

Once I got to know a few of them I was surprised to find I was right for three of them!

Never admitted it to them though, didn't want them thinking I was a weirdo.

Or explaining to Mary that I had nicknamed her Tiffany-Angelica based on what she looked like...

I did it once. Hoping for another. It gave an odd sense of achievement 😁

I’m with the ones who said she’d say yes to whatever name you guessed, or the clue made it obvious.

savoycabbage · Yesterday 07:54

But she gave you a clue and you had extra information such as where she lived, how old she was, her ethnicity and probably her social class. You know what names eight year old white middle class girls may have in 2026.

I do supply teaching and ‘do you know my name?’ Is quite a common question, especially at playtime. I can definitely have a good go at it. Obviously some children are called Bluebell and not Ada but not many.

1 in 10,000 chance, no wonder he was shocked!

Riapia · Yesterday 08:17

Do you believe in coincidences OP?
Yes?
So do I!
Wow what’s the chance of that.

Bones101 · Yesterday 08:25

I worked in paeds a few years ago it was either Noah or Lily for every 3rd kid lol

Delici · Yesterday 08:28

Lilly-Mae. Obviously.

With the clue "I give you something for free" I would guess one of the following (in order of probability):

Grace
Charity
Santa (with or without Claus)
Gonorrhea

Was it any of those, OP? If so, no need to feel unsettled.

I don’t think that was the clue! I think she means that the girl said if she guessed her name she could have something from her stall for free. Then she have her a clue.

Like..it’s a flower or it starts with E or it’s an island.

MyThreeWords · Yesterday 09:04

Ah, ok! So not Gonorrhea then!Grin

Doh!!

Notmyreality · Yesterday 09:05

Wow OP that’s amazeballs!
