Aibu To be annoyed about so many Facebook posts about celebrating st George's day being racist. No one post this for st Patrick's day, st Andrew's or st David's.... Hogmanay and burns night have parties

By celebrating being English, passing democracy to the world, Shakespeare, Agatha Christie, TV, the jet engine, the internet... railways, the industrial revolution, beer, the Beatles... All should be celebrated.

Yes we did some shite things...but white slavery (20+ million), the Holocaust, programs in Eastern Europe. King Leopold of Belgium hunting African people. The depopulation of parts of the USSR, the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia.....all things that in the last 125 years England has nothing to do with...yet people like to think that we who celebrate our Englishness are scum.

Neither the Royal Family or Prince and Princess of Wales have made any reference to St. George's Day. I wonder why that is. Certainly the Wales Insta page acknowledges St David's Day and St. Patrick's Day - not 100% sure about St. Andrew's Day which is 30th November.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/04/2026 21:25

I agree with those saying the Scouts celebrating it is nice - I think because they always have. We’ll be going to a church thing on Sunday with the Scouts, that’s true.

It’s the making stuff up that we’ve never done, and no one has ever done, for St George’s day that I don’t like. I’m happy to join in other people traditions if welcomed but not to make stuff up.

LOL. Love how St George’s day apparently represents being English. But St George was born in Turkey!

St Patrick was born in Britain. Just shows the absurdity of nationalism as a concept really.

He and Rosie Holt seem to be happy together ❤️

Maybe he’s just sick of the politics. He was very jaded on the two or three recent podcasts I’ve heard him on.

The television was invented by John Logie Baird, a Scot not an Englishman

FFS

I haven’t actually seen any posts about St George’s Day one way or the other.

But honestly? I’m sure St George’s Day wasn’t celebrated when I was young - it feels really forced and not really the national tradition at all. It isn’t our national day in any way, because it’s just not something that was ever really celebrated.

Bonfire Night seems like more a real tradition - albeit it relates to a Scottish king and I think is celebrated in the rest of the UK too. Maybe we just don’t have a national day - would that be so awful? I’ve never felt the lack of one!

Maybe it’s like the Spanish having no words to their national anthem?

Edited

Exactly!

We were a bunch of empire building bastards and the racists have claimed our flag so it’s hard to see it as a positive thing at the moment.

Basically, and before that we were crusading bastards.

Hogmanay isn’t a Scottish party, it’s just what Scottish people call New Years Eve. It’s celebrated around the world….us giving it a different name doesn’t make it a celebration of Scotland.

also, the tv wasn’t invented by an English person….

Probs cos St Patrick’s day doesn’t remind people of colonialism

Ficinothricegreat · 23/04/2026 21:28

The country is full of useful middle class idiots who have zero idea what’s going on in many parts of the country, are so busy ensuring other cultures can be celebrated here they have no idea about the native cultures.

I’m not sure whether these people are actually thick or whether they are aware of their hypocrisy.

I follow a ND you tuber/singer and she’s recently gone all political with stupid little scenes about “vote Green” clearly the woke groups are targeting the ND community just like they did with the trans agenda!

So. happy St George’s day, let’s celebrate the Bard too today and all the fabulous world leading culture of England.

Decacaffeinatednow · 23/04/2026 21:29

passing democracy to the world
Eh??

mindutopia · 23/04/2026 21:29

St George’s Day as it has traditionally been celebrated isn’t racist. Our village is having a church service on Thursday afternoon. Feel free to go to church and say some prayers for England. Our local town is having a fete on Saturday. By all means, go eat a cream tea and watch the ferret racing and buy some potted plants.

But this is not what all the yobs at Wetherspoons wish to do. They don’t want to go to church or go to a cream tea fundraiser. They want flag waving in the street and cheap lager. Those folks absolutely do have racist intentions and it’s why none of the rest of us want to be affiliated with this nonsense. In previous years, I might have gone to the fete. This year I will not because of the miscreants who will no doubt turn up and I don’t want to be associated with losers like that.

He was a slave so how wouldn't that remind you of colonialism?

ScholesPanda · 23/04/2026 21:30

I don't recognize this at all. I've not seen anyone say it's racist.
In fact my 'leftie' MP has posted wishing everyone a happy St George's Day.

BatchCookBabe · 23/04/2026 21:30

100% agree @NotAnotherScarf (about people being 'got at' and mocked and deried for celebrating St Georges Day,) but you'll get very few posters supporting you on here. Plenty of people not commenting will agree though... That's why the poll result won't match the content of the posts. Wink

Many people will click 'YANBU' but won't comment, because they CBA with the backlash, and accusations of bigot, and flag-shagger, and people calling them thick, because they dare to support England/being English. It's the only nationality that is routinely bashed on here, and more often than not by the English! It's bizarre!!!

Oh FFS. We were just more successful at doing something most other European countries were doing. We have millions of things to be proud of in our history. If people don’t like it bugger off and live somewhere outside of Europe

I only read probably the first 20 replies. They have cemented my decision to leave the building. - been on and off considering it for the past few weeks, but this is f’ing insane! I know I don’t ’need’ to announce my departure- before you strange ones post that comment. Seriously, what planet are you all on?

Belgium was terrible in the colonial era. It never really gets mentioned for what they did. Weird.

Lol where are these parts of the country that have no middle classes? And double lol at the idea that it's the true working class who are well informed and that are guardians of the sacred flame.

Keha · 23/04/2026 21:34

Not read full thread, but I dont think I've ever heard of a st George's day party or any significant events (going back decades). I don't think it's something which is traditionally done, or not in my experience. Next weekend it's may day and there'll be lots of events where I am. I know may day is celebrated beyond england, but if you are hankering after some traditional "English" activity maybe find some maypole dancing or beating of the bounds.
