English people are second class citizens

Aibu To be annoyed about so many Facebook posts about celebrating st George's day being racist. No one post this for st Patrick's day, st Andrew's or st David's.... Hogmanay and burns night have parties

By celebrating being English, passing democracy to the world, Shakespeare, Agatha Christie, TV, the jet engine, the internet... railways, the industrial revolution, beer, the Beatles... All should be celebrated.

Yes we did some shite things...but white slavery (20+ million), the Holocaust, programs in Eastern Europe. King Leopold of Belgium hunting African people. The depopulation of parts of the USSR, the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia.....all things that in the last 125 years England has nothing to do with...yet people like to think that we who celebrate our Englishness are scum.

Basically, and before that we were crusading bastards.

Every human descended from bastards somewhere along the line.

Oh FFS. We were just more successful at doing something most other European countries were doing. We have millions of things to be proud of in our history. If people don’t like it bugger off and live somewhere outside of Europe

Amen to that!

I agree with those saying the Scouts celebrating it is nice - I think because they always have. We’ll be going to a church thing on Sunday with the Scouts, that’s true.

It’s the making stuff up that we’ve never done, and no one has ever done, for St George’s day that I don’t like. I’m happy to join in other people traditions if welcomed but not to make stuff up.

It's promise renewal day
It's great watching an entire church full of Scouts saying the promise at the same time. The service is normally quite good fun and aimed at children

JustSawJohnny · 23/04/2026 21:15

I don't believe this happens in the slightest.

I have never in my entire 53 years seen or heard of a St George's day celebration.

We as a country gave that up, or decided not to bother.

That said, the only people I see displaying flags and wearing crosses right now are race-baiting neanderthals - an aesthetic that millions of us would absolutely seek to avoid being associated with in the present climate.

So no, I won't be putting a flag up or eating a Vicky Sponge, BUT if you want to know why we're not celebrating St George's Day, maybe you should start by asking your Nan, because she wasn't celebrating it in her youth either!

Agree ! I didn’t even know it was St George’s day until reading this thread ! St Patrick’s and St David’s day I am aware of because I have known people for 5 decades who acknowledge it …one of my best nights out ever was in Sydney celebrating St Patrick’s day ! My Welsh relatives always meet up for a celebration on March 1st sharing Welsh Cakes and a beer or two.

The Dutch, the Spanish, the Portuguese, the Germans. Weirdly I see Germans get less hate than we do considering the Nazis.

Catullus5 · 23/04/2026 21:35

The most English thing to do is make nothing of this day. What would you prefer? A massive piss up, lots of people wearing silly hats and pouring white dye into rivers?

And out of curiosity, if English people are second class citizens, who are the first class citizens?

Well no need for guesses here

I guess you must be a racist.

Lol where are these parts of the country that have no middle classes? And double lol at the idea that it's the true working class who are well informed and that are guardians of the sacred flame.

lol, and where did I say any of this, but actually there are plenty of areas in say Birmingham where there are no middle classes. And lol that you don’t think Working Class people can be better informed! Are you normally so snobby, your post completely proves my point, thinking you’re superior to the working class and their lived experience!

Yep the “we hate the colonist English” only bleet whatever is on the barn wall this week. Honestly, if they could only read actual history!!!!

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/04/2026 21:40

Well I can only go by my local FB group and there is quite a proportion hiding behind being patriotic about St Georges day to be overtly racist. "Keeping England English" was one I saw more than once.

Where I live is very multicultural due to the industries based here, so inevitably that has rankled the racists. Tommy Robinsons lot tried to have a rally here, thinking that all the right thinking white English people would support them. They got booed off the streets!

This. ^ It's terribly fashionable to bash the British these days, and especially the English! As you say, it's as if we are the only ones to have ever done anything bad or wrong. Not only did plenty of other European countries do as much - or more (not so great things) than us, plenty of countries on other continents did too. (Some of them continue to do so too!) Yet the English are treated like some kind of pondscum - by some. As I said, it's almost always English people who spout the most hate and bile.

It's quite baffling. It doesn't even annoy me or make me angry, I just find it baffling, and rather amusing. Imagine hating your OWN nationality that much.

Bizarre! Confused

MushMonster · 23/04/2026 21:40

OP, I am a foreigner, living in UK for over 20 years. I have not seen any of those posts, but I think they are plainly ridiculous for what you say. There is nothing wrong or racist with celebrating your own culture and your day. Whatever the past, we are celebrating our lives and our family, our house, our school, our food, our jokes, our people. It is time to live in the present.
I do not care what anyone says, the British flag is a beautiful flag and I have tshirts with it on. The English flag looks really nice on display too. I love the Welsh one, as I live in Wales. I have dragons and daffodils everywhere.
I have nothing but respect and love ( after 20 years I honestly love this land) for these flags and it cheers me to see them on display.
I think it is better to ignore these sort of people. It seems like giving them any time is encouraging them.

We were successful at it, as well as at divide and rule, which is why people in those countries we ruled now want to live here, it's what they are familiar with.

Smugbadger · 23/04/2026 21:42

Absolute nonsense. My DCs school
has celebrated St George’s day today. His beaver troop (lodge?) will parade this weekend.

Nice, multicultural school (and scouting community.

Go and organise a party if you want one, or support your local school, or volunteer to chat to people at an old people’s home.
plenty of ways to join in!

Break down what is racist about “keep England English” presumably you have no issues around colonialism then?

BatchCookBabe · 23/04/2026 21:43

@MushMonster THANK YOU. 😃 Lovely post.

Funny you should say all this, every single person I meet/have met who's not from this country originally thinks like you, as I said, whenever you hear any hate and vitriol for the English, it's people who are British born English who are spouting it...

Catsrule12 · 23/04/2026 21:44

So maybe we should take them back if they were better under British rule, because you seem to be saying that since we left those countries it’s got so bad, they would much rather live under British rule again!

I cannot understand that! It does not sip into my brain!

Nextweektoo · 23/04/2026 21:46

If there is a bank holiday in there, then 100% , im in, let's celebrate it!

JudgeJ · 23/04/2026 21:46

Have yourself a party then. Wave your flag, paint a few roundabouts.

Or in your case, be pathetic.

Interesting. I didn’t know it was St George’s day today. If I had I wouldn’t do anything to celebrate. I don’t feel patriotic, I don’t love my country. I don’t know why, that’s just how I feel.
