What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

Perhaps the gardener has lots of other jobs on. Or might want to get the work done in the cool of the morning not in the burning hot sun.

sorry yapping

Women (mainly) who wear Crocs with sports socks, pull the socks fully up over their leggings, then think it looks good. Trust me, it doesn't, it looks ridiculous. It just baffles me that they can't see that.
People who follow actors pages on Facebook, which aren't actually anything to do with the actual actors, comment on posts that are put up, as if they're communicating with the actual person!
Posters on Facebook who post "Happy heavenly birthday nan, you'd have been 112 today, been gone from us for 30 years" or some such drivel. When is the cut off for that?! I can maybe understand the first 5 years or so, but beyond that, it's daft!
People who pay vast amounts of money for personalised number plates. Why? If I had the money, I wouldn't do it, there's better things to spend my money on.
People who post on MN, clearly wanting everyone to agree with their outrageous post, then when they don't, they get nasty with every poster that challenges them. You've asked AIBU, just accept that you're not sometimes!
The last one is a bit of a personal one, but it baffles me that my neighbours gardener turns up every few weeks around 7am and starts working away with noisy petrol appliances. She's in her 80s, even she doesn't get up at 7am! Doesn't matter the weather, it's between 7am and 7-20. They can't assume everyone will be up getting ready for work, I'm not!

I would be politely complaining about this! That’s bang out of order

Makes sense to have a food scrap container sitting aroubd smelly unable to fit in the fridge..
Eew grosse.
They can shove there recycling.

So you put it in the general bin where it’ll sit being manky and smelly for a fortnight instead of the food caddy which gets collected weekly?

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 24/04/2026 15:33

Not everybody wants to do that, though. They may not be online to order it, they may not want to pay the delivery charge, they may not need enough to justify a full order, they may not want to/be able to guarantee to be at home for a slot, they may prefer to look at the food that's available and choose their own...

I don’t buy enough for delivery. Besides, there isn’t a reduced section online

Why do people park next to you in an empty carpark!? Recently, I was sat in my car, in a car park which was barely full, and a woman decided to turn into the parking space next to me and scraped all the the way down my car in the process. I asked her why, and she couldn’t give me an answer.

That and why neighbours think “I know, let’s turn out music full blast in the garden, all my other neighbours will love that!”

Omg this does my brain in too.

Single50something · 24/04/2026 18:06

The bins thing..same in our road. The two retired men put their bins out by 8am to be collected next day...often in their pjs/dressing gowns. They men will then be in and out multi times that day. I think its competitive bin putting out 🤔
They have also taken to stacking the recycling tubs in the same v neat way...and had a discussion about it one evening 😀

jenzzi · 24/04/2026 18:08

The woman who lives opposite my parents (technically the first house on the cul de sac) hires a gardener/cleaner/handyman. She makes him jet wash the driveway for a few hours a week. Even when we had a hosepipe ban.

If there is a hosepipe ban this summer, my parents are going to report her. I bet her lawn if real was lush green.

Why do parents take babies and children with them when they do a massive food shop? The notion genuinely baffles me.
Just get your shopping delivered and save yourself stress, expense and energy.

Why do whole families go?! Never understood that.

jenzzi · 24/04/2026 18:10

The bins. There are two households where the woman doesn’t take the bins in. Have seen them walk past the bins. Still on top of the drive and path for 3 days until the husband takes it in

AImportantMermaid · 24/04/2026 18:11

Why do people pay £100 to go to a gig and then stand and talk the whole way through it? At one gig a complete stranger turned round, shook my hand, and introduced herself, clearly ready for a chat. No thank you, this singing and dancing and listening to top tunes isn’t going to do itself.

Shinyhappyapple · 24/04/2026 18:11

jenzzi · 24/04/2026 15:01

Or remove their name and address from Amazon and suchlike packages

Sorry - do you mean you don’t understand people who do or don’t do this ?

Northermcharn · 24/04/2026 18:12

Why does my DH have to close every door of a room he's in, and even ones he's not in. Drives me bonkers!

Silverfoxette · 24/04/2026 18:12

Why do people eat sandwiches with a knife and fork

Our council doesnt provide a food caddy so its a moot point anyway but I dont keep my general waste bin inside my house (noone does) so why would there be any smell?

Besides, everything is bagged up in sealed bin bags. If this food caddy is kept inside it sounds far more stinky

I imagine this is down to the gardener’s schedule rather than your neighbours. I can’t imagine your neighbour is the only one they garden for. I guess being self employed they choose to start early, either to maximise their day and earning opportunities, or so they can finish early .

WonsWoo · 23/04/2026 12:03

After a particularly annoying experience in Oxford yesterday, why do people go to a museum then wander round having a LOUD conversation about anything other than what is in the museum. Two people talking at length about their DCs uni issues through at least 4 rooms of the museum before I stuck my air pods in to drown them out. They never stopped look at a single exhibit in about 20 minutes.

@WonsWoo THIS! And the same with some people in art galleries, exhibitions or stately homes too. Pig-ignorance is my guess for why they do it, because they’re clearly not curious at all to learn anything at all about where they are.

I’m also baffled by why anyone is still smoking.

Shinyhappyapple · 24/04/2026 18:22

Starlightexpresss · 24/04/2026 18:15

So for us, it’s the same thing. Bin bag in kitchen bin gets moved to the outside bin when it’s full, and little bag in the food caddy gets moved to the outside (larger) caddy when it’s full. And as the food caddy is smaller it gets put outside more often than the general waste. Larger caddy is kept in shed alongside cardboard recycling bag.

Why do people not lock their doors?

Well those are people who live in quite safe areas, surely? Or a big family when there is almost always someone home and not enough keys for everyone.

1980isitjustme · 24/04/2026 18:25

Why do all family members crowd around the baggage collection belt at the airport? Drives me insane 🤯

Gwenhwyfar · 24/04/2026 18:26

QuintadosMalvados · 23/04/2026 12:09

Regarding the bin thing, where I live they should be put out after 6pm Tuesday.
I once put them out at 2pm as I was going out overnight and didn't want festering black bags in the house for a fortnight.
The feckers have a collection van they pick rubbish up in on non-collection days.
They opened a black sack, saw a stray envelope that had got in there (I do recycle but it must have got in there in error) and I got a warning letter about putting bins out on wrong day.

Infuriating as they must know people go away.
No leeway with the buggers.

Where I live you get a fine if you put the bin out on the wrong day.
I was laughing when on another thread someone was shocked a person living in a flat may have left a bin in there during their holidays. She didn't seem to understand that some people just aren't allowed to put their bins out on the wrong day.

ProfessorBinturong · 24/04/2026 18:27

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 24/04/2026 10:42

Oh, yes, indeed. "I'll trawl through MN looking for threads that I think are not worthwhile for people to bother clicking on, reading and participating in - and then I will click on them, read them and participate in them to let everybody know that they shouldn't have done the same as me!"

Also the people who see a tribute thread to a recently-deceased well-liked but non-household-name celebrity - unambiguously titled 'Bob Bobinson RIP" or similar and genuinely believe that the best use of their time is to click and engage with the thread to tell everybody else on there that they've never heard of them.

I can only think that some people don't really understand that MN is huge and worldwide, with something for everybody. Maybe they believe that every single thread they see is directed at and assumed to be of interest to them, and they are then annoyed if it doesn't interest them. I wonder if they also go to the supermarket and get angry at the presence of every item on the shelves that they personally don't want to buy?!

I suspect they are the same people as the ones who compulsively write reviews.

"Haven't used it yet."

"Bought as a present so didn't try it."

"Hasn't arrived yet, so don't know what it's like."

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 24/04/2026 18:27

I went to the theatre last year and there was a family of 3 or 4 adults sitting behind me. I overheard mum moaning that she hadn't been able to sleep because the audience was laughing too much! It was a comedy ('A Comedy about Spies' - the clue is in the name?) so what was she expecting?! Tickets were pushing £100 each. If she wanted to sleep she could have gone to a hotel for that!!

Anyway, that really was a head-scratcher. People are odd!!

MaddestGranny · 24/04/2026 18:28

why do cyclists insist on cycling on the pavement beside a perfectly good cycle-lane right next to them on the road?

MyRubyFox · 24/04/2026 18:28

My sister, who is very careful with money, spends £100 on a kettle - just because of the brand name when mine nearly the same to look at £19. I mean, all it does is boil water, if it had another function e.g. make tea, I could understand it! Weird, or just a snob?
