What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

People who say they love animals but eat them.

People that comment on pregnant woman’s bodies and tell you that you’re looking really big or really small. “Wow, you’re getting so big!” “3 months left - more like 3 weeks!” “Twins, surely!” I don’t know how people have the nerve to say these things.

It’s a bit like walking into a room and saying wow Dave you’re looking massive today

It's not the same because fatness is negative in our culture whereas being big in pregnancy isn't.

My area has just gone over to food caddies. One week garden waste, recycling and food caddies are collected. Next week, general waste and food caddies. Several neighbours refuse to use the food caddy, which means their general waste bin will be minging by the time it’s collected.

Makes no sense.

As has ours, and it’s chaos. Tiny bins rolling down the road in the wind. At least unlike the recycling they are locked shut.
I can’t use my garden bin for ‘animal waste’. I asked if this included guinea pig bedding, wet soiled hay, which is all just grass, ie: garden waste. No I couldn’t.
Why? My boys have done half the job of composting for them!

So my landfill bin is always to capacity every fortnight.
We went on a break , leaving the bin in the same place we always do for the last 38 years, only to discover on our return it was missed. The advice was to email the missed collection, except it’s impossible to do so after 48 hours. Go to the office to explain, advice to email…..sent cctv footage and complained to our councillor (who laughed when we asked if they were employing the blind, bin man walking past in thick sunglasses).
She did managed to get it emptied though! 8 days late by the same sunglasses bin man, who said I should have a garden bin for the hay 😩

Along a similar theme, why do some people insist on cleaning out their wheelie bins regularly? Even their recycling bin, which should only contain clean, dry waste.

I get that it might need a good hose out very occasionally if it gets really stinky and minging (which shouldn't happen anyway if you use bin bags) ; but it's a bin that's there for rubbish and it lives outside - why does it need to be sparkling clean every time before you dump the next load in it?!

My bin gets covered in maggots occasionally so I use a large bag in my wheelie bin and clean it out when needed. So sometimes you have to.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/04/2026 18:33

Gwenhwyfar · 24/04/2026 18:29

It's not the same because fatness is negative in our culture whereas being big in pregnancy isn't.

But if you're carrying one and people are always saying how huge you are, oh there must be twins in etc that ISN'T positive, it's rude and it can be worrying. One reason for being so large can be extra fluid which can be caused by quite a few bad things. Similarly telling someone how small their bump is can worry them about of baby is big enough.

TrixieMixie · 24/04/2026 18:35

I don’t understand why people pick up their dog’s shit and put it in a bag, then hang it on a tree or a bush. Particularly when there’s a dog shit bin right next to the tree or bush.

And if there isn't, why don't they just take it home? If they're going to hang it off a tree, then why bother picking it up in the first place?!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/04/2026 18:39

Today in the general public people trying to push past in the supermarket when they can clearly see you’re selecting products - like they and their shop are so much more important

Starlightexpresss · 24/04/2026 18:40

Shinyhappyapple · 24/04/2026 18:22

So for us, it’s the same thing. Bin bag in kitchen bin gets moved to the outside bin when it’s full, and little bag in the food caddy gets moved to the outside (larger) caddy when it’s full. And as the food caddy is smaller it gets put outside more often than the general waste. Larger caddy is kept in shed alongside cardboard recycling bag.

right, so why would the outside bin be stinky and manky then?

Prior to getting a food caddy was your bin revolting and smelly all the time?

I mean, I wouldnt want to get inside my large outside bin but its not manky and stinky

If my inside bin has stinky food in it like fish remnants I immediately bag it up and put it outside so you dont need a food caddy to do that!!

I am baffled by people that live in filthy homes....like, how do you relax in filth .
Especially the people that blame the kids/dogs/cats/hamster for the filth, you chose to have them, just clean up!
I am extra baffled by the ones that brag about it - admitting happily they haven't changed their bedding in six months etc.

It's what they've always known and it's comfortable for them.
I try to be clean and tidy these days and the place is quite minimalist, but I've noticed I feel quite cosy in a cluttered place even if that's harder to keep clean.

why do cyclists insist on cycling on the pavement beside a perfectly good cycle-lane right next to them on the road?

This! The are usually dressed in lycra and therefore far too up themselves to use a cycle path and then ride in the middle of the road so you cant pass them in your car!

Someone kindly picked up their dog shit, bagged it and chucked the bag outside my front door

Also the people who see a tribute thread to a recently-deceased well-liked but non-household-name celebrity - unambiguously titled 'Bob Bobinson RIP" or similar and genuinely believe that the best use of their time is to click and engage with the thread to tell everybody else on there that they've never heard of them.

Now that's one that genuinely baffles me too @AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf and it's a common occurrence.

Not only do those posters choose to advertise their own ignorance but they do so in quite an authoritarian manner: “Well I've never even heard of X.” Implying that's the final word on the subject, nothing further to be said.

Really weird.

The James Van Der Beek thread was particularly bad. The first reply was a jokesy jokes “Who He?” yes because the death of a relatively young father of six is perfect joke material, talk about sensitivity

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/04/2026 18:49

Did they think it was from your dog, @AwesomeChampagne, and you hadn’t picked it up? That’s the only, even vaguely, rational explanation for that. Or they could just be filthy buggers.

LaughingCat · 24/04/2026 18:49

Whatexcellentboiledpotatoes · 23/04/2026 12:17

I understand that but what's wrong with 5 or 6pm? Why are they out on the pavement from early morning when they are home all day?

And anyway, they don't care about noise, they walk their barky spaniel from 5am 🙃

Oh, I do this. I unlock the front door in the morning the day before and put the bin out, then I try and go back out later that day and throw out the last of my rubbish. That way, if I somehow forget to go back out then it’s already out there with most of the rubbish in. I’m not usually looking at my phone in the evening as I’ve got a 6mo little one so reminders wouldn’t help me. I’m also famously scatty so I’ve forgotten to put it out many times. By putting it out first thing, I minimise the impact of my idiocy 😂

mumuseli · 24/04/2026 18:51

My neighbours who don't sort their recycling into the correct boxes/bags and just put any old rubbish in each container! Do they really think it doesn't matter?
And they seem oblivious as to how leaving it uncovered means it all blows across the street.

Why do people pay £100 to go to a gig and then stand and talk the whole way through it? At one gig a complete stranger turned round, shook my hand, and introduced herself, clearly ready for a chat. No thank you, this singing and dancing and listening to top tunes isn’t going to do itself.

Or film it on a mobile? I don’t think anyone has watched the entire thing on their mobile

the80sweregreat · 24/04/2026 18:55

I’m sure that our council has a silly ‘ rule’ that bins have to be put out by 7am or something! I mean , how would they know ? 😆 🙄
DS 2 lives in a flat and their set up for bins and recycling is very complex ! I don’t think everyone follows the rules there to the letter though.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/04/2026 18:56

"I don’t understand why people have no shame going to the supermarket in their PJs. I saw this just yesterday and it’s just such an awful look."

Maybe they don't care what you think is an awful look.
When I had a long (to the floor) coat I used to put it over my PJs to to go the corner shop for milk for my morning tea if I was out of milk. Nobody could see my PJs, but so what if they did really.

Because it looks dirty, like you have just got out of bed and gone out within a shower. If you are happy for people to think that then crack on.

Oh I’ve just thought of one, it doesn’t annoy me in fact I’m impressed by it:

On a recent transatlantic trip, I was sitting in the aisle seat both times. On neither flight (7 hours each way) did the people by the window/middle seat get up to use the toilet! I didn’t sleep and I would have had to stand up to let them out.

Who are these people with cast iron bladders?!

I was seriously impressed. They were in all cases young - under 30 for sure. I suspect that may have something to do with it 🤣

They probably went at the same time you did?

RedPanda901 · 24/04/2026 18:59

People who drive into Tesco local or similar with 10 or so car spaces and send a passenger in while they block the entrance, leave their car running even though there are free spaces and it would take 10 seconds to park properly. Ditto people who leave their car running outside residential areas/schools for no apparent reason.

ChillingWithMySnowmies · 24/04/2026 19:00

i don't understand why people park in disabled bays when they don't have a blue badge.

But my real bafflement is why grown adults feel the need to belittle and ridicule other peoples hobbies, fashion, and tastes...

Being friends with people you don't even like... I'm all for the social norm of just smiling and saying hi, but actively spending time with someone who you talk negatively about all the times is just mental to me.

Are they not friends of friends or a friend's partner that they just can't get out of spending time with?

Cherryicecreamx · 24/04/2026 19:02

To answer yours, probably that feeling that they've got ahead on something! Ticked off their to do list. I don't mind the early ones as I can follow their lead on what bin it is 😂

Hmm what baffles me.. not much anymore 😂 but this whole "need to rush home", whether that is somebody speeding in a car or more specifically if children are in a park playing together and then the parents rush them back home.. like for what reason exactly? I guess I would rather my child have the opportunity to play with someone longer even if it means putting dinner on a bit later! It just saddens me splitting up playtime/social time when I can't see a good reason for it!
