“First post nails it” / “This”

I’ve been around these parts for many a year under various guises and I’ve noticed recently how many people are making posts just for the sake of it, saying things like “first post nails it”, “this” or “omg hun I was going to say the same thing xxx”

I find it infuriating that these posters don’t contribute anything but are just desperate to be seen. Is there actually a reason for it?

I could probably ask the same thing about people who post to say “didn’t want to read and run but I don’t have any advice”, “nothing to add but I’m just marking my place” and an old favourite, “thanks for the new thread”.

AIBU to think that if you don’t have anything new/interesting to contribute, that it’s perfectly possible to just not make a post at all?!

(don’t get me started on the general shit that the AIBU board attracts…)

What is the difference between saying “this” and effectively writing the same post? Surely the OP would want to know if it’s lots of people vs one on the divide of opinions?

I wouldn’t say that ‘This’ referring to another post falls under ‘have nothing to say’. I might post this if I read the OP, want to offer an opinion but then see that someone else has already written what I intended to write. Rather than making a very similar post, I might say ‘this’.
However, I’m inclined to agree with you on ‘didn’t want to read and run’.

I've said many times, under various usernames, that MN need a public like count button, so that people can show their agreement with a viewpoint, without having to quote the whole thing and say "agree".

Would make the threads much more interesting to read as the conversation would actually develop in a linear fashion.

They are posts to support a certain opinion or a certain side of an argument so OP knows that there are more than one person holding that view. I find it odd that this infuriates you…why the strong reaction?

The problem is there is nothing visible to show that you support someone else's statement - only the poster can see. So the only way to back it up is to say so and if they have already succinctly said it - sometimes even better than you could - then what is wrong with saying that the first poster nailed it? Because they did. It would be different if you could see 'likes' against the post or similar.

In terms of 'didn't want to read and run' I think it's churlish to dislike it, given that it's almost always posted in response to someone in need in the early hours of the morning who is having a bit of a personal crisis. No one posts that response on someone wanting an opinion on wallpaper do they? It's called sympathy.

No, I think it adds weight to the viewpoint and therefore the OP will take more notice.

It's because it's often true, and it's usually when the first post is succinct and could be said to say all that needs to be said. Like an OP describing an abusive partner and first post says 'He's an abuser - get rid'. That kind of thing.

The irony of posting this thread complaining about pointless comments.

Its just emphasis isn’t it? If a post really resonates with multiple people it carries more weight. Which is often useful for an OP in coming to a decision.

I do this because the OP can’t see likes on posts. If I agree I’m not going to rewrite the whole point of view I agree with but show the OP that there is support for that opinion.

But then some users would just say the “right” thing to get to the top and compete for likes.
If I wanted that I’d be on Reddit or whatever.
