Having ‘a cuppa’

Why does this sentence infuriate me so? I already know I’m probably being unreasonable but it’s so grating. I can’t be the only one?

All the ones here that people have said - Cuppa, Sarnie, Picky Bits, Nibbles, Smellies, Chippy Tea, PJ’s, Hubby, Wine O’Clock all do my head in too! Picky Bits by far the worst though!

Holibobs is annoying too but at least it’s an amusing sounding word.

Hate wine o’clock! Also hate today year’s old!

A nice cup of tea Father? Go on, go on, go on. (Father Ted). 😆

I say 'do you want tea?' btu that apparently annoys some on here too!

We could be very Scottish and use' you'll no be wanting a tea then?' or 'you'll have had your cup before you came, hey?'

Add to that “X more sleeps until…”

It is a bad one, I’ll give you that. But nothing is worse than ‘succulent’!

A succulent Chinese meal’. (If you know, you know 😁).

Hate the word meal too.

And CRIMBO. Forgot about that one.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 19/04/2026 13:15

I was just about to say ‘five more sleeps’

Actually, all slang can get in the bin.

/ waits for inevitable hating on getting in the bin.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 19/04/2026 13:17

And no, it can’t, because I love lots of slang! Just the right slang.

I love anything said in a Scottish accent. 😊

Prefer cuppa to brew.

Same - can’t abide brew!!

Auburndi · 19/04/2026 13:19

"Pressie/prezzie"!
"Sleeps" as in "Only 200 sleeps till Christmas!"
It's all so infantilising.

FunMustard · 19/04/2026 13:20

I'm gonna put the keckle on and 'av a cuppa right now!

Andepeda · 19/04/2026 13:20

Someone said 'panties' on tv the other day, she was American.....

Moist.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 19/04/2026 13:21

Oh my god. Lickle bockle.

I think you're out of order complaining about "cuppa" but happily using "hating on"

I was waiting for this. I don’t usually say it, honest!

Funnywonder · 19/04/2026 13:22

Cuppa doesn’t bother me. We don’t really say it in NI, although my auntie used to say it and I always noticed, specifically because it was unusual. Probably watching too many soaps😃 We just tend to say ‘cup of tea’ or just ‘tea’. Do you want a cup of tea? Do you want tea? Elderly people might say ‘a wee drap o’ tay’. My granny used to say that.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 19/04/2026 13:23

My Scottish mother used to insist on only having half a cup.

I’ll see your panties and raise you a ‘gusset’

edited to say I’m so sorry!

Filth.

Edited

I don't like gusset, but I sorry to all, but I use the term panties.

It is just what they are called here 😂
Even when buying online.
What does annoy me is the singular term, a full brief panty, a Brazilian panty ..

I think i might have to get my coat....

Piggywaspushed · 19/04/2026 13:24

That's ' a wee cup'.

A big mug or just an ickle cup?

ConstantlyFuriosa · 19/04/2026 10:51

It’s right up there with ‘my hubby’.

I'm a chap and have always referred to my DW as "er indoors" - "I'll have to ask 'er indoor's opinion on that" - she loves it, I think, maybe not, don't know!!

Piggywaspushed · 19/04/2026 13:27

I genuinely think there's a difference between holibobs and picky bits and words like cuppa and sarnie. The latter two are older, regional to a large extent and working class so there is some element of snobbery and regionalism about objections to cuppa.

DaisyMayBojangles · 19/04/2026 13:28

Oh god I hate ‘cuppa’ too!
Also see ‘cauli’, ‘baby pots’, ‘spuds’, ‘cherry toms’ …..🤯

Are you in the US, where they seem to be able to say that word without shuddering? 😁
