Was I fat shamed at the gym earlier?

I will keep this to the point. My local gym has a foyer area prior to the entrance and there are often different stalls/people trying to sell things. Today, there was two representatives of the gym. They were trying to sell personal trainer packages. I dodged them on entry but could hear them trying to loudly get peoples attention. On the way out, the female one shouted to me ‘have you got two minutes, can I help you lose that peri belly’. I said ‘excuse me’ and carried on walking out. I’ve since reflected on the incident and consider it most inappropriate and am wondering if I should complain. I am kicking myself for not saying something but I was totally shocked.

WTF?! Commenting on your appearance is completely inappropriate!

InTheVanguard · 15/04/2026 18:03

Sorry to hear that OP. In what world do they think that this approach will lead to a customer turning back and saying: yes please, thanks for motivating me so!? 🤷‍♀️

8misskitty8 · 15/04/2026 18:04

Yes, I would complain about that. Being rude to potential clients is not the way to get people to sign up.
Cheeky cow.

Carlie97 · 15/04/2026 18:05

I would. Not only fat shaming you but age shaming you too.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 15/04/2026 18:06

Yes I’d complain about that.

NovemberMorn · 15/04/2026 18:06

She sounds like a complete and utter idiot.
As they are representing the gym, which you presumably pay membership for, I would certainly complain about the way she shouted after you.

SilenceInside · 15/04/2026 18:08

Oh wow. That would have made me super cross. That’s not the way to try to sell PT packages. I’d definitely complain. And yes it’s age shaming as well as fat shaming. I bloody hate the way everything to do with women who aren’t under 30 is labelled “peri”.

Didimum · 15/04/2026 18:10

That’s beyond awful.

BollyMolly · 15/04/2026 18:11

It was just plain rude. You don’t need to feed the drama by calling it ‘shaming’.

Sorry? How on earth am I at fault in this?

I would. Not only fat shaming you but age shaming you too.

Biological sex shaming too.

Itsthenameisntit · 15/04/2026 18:16

How old are you?

Beryr · 15/04/2026 18:16

How old are you?

Late 40’s.

You should of shouted well it ain’t fucking helped yours.

Where did I say you were at fault for anything?

Someone being rude to you out of nowhere is obviously not your fault.

Itsthenameisntit · 15/04/2026 18:18

Beryr · 15/04/2026 18:16

Late 40’s.

Odd to assume peri. You could well have been menopausal!

So yes - very rude (and also very weird)

Pinkgin00 · 15/04/2026 18:18

Those comments are not appropriate at all, complain to the management.

rwalker · 15/04/2026 18:24

I have a low bar and high tolerance so generally roll my eyes and get on with life
but that is absolutely outrageous
I’m all for a bit of banter but this was way too personal ,rude and offensive
I would complain in person to the manager to get there reaction ,thoughts and response

emails can be read and then a basic stock reply of how they will retraining and they’ll be an insincere apology on the end for good measure

Strawberrryfields · 15/04/2026 18:25

Wow! So rude. Complain. You’re not paying to be insulted. (Not saying this is you but) it can take some people a lot of courage to go to the gym and the last thing people need is these type of comments. Could really knock someone’s confidence and put them off returning.

alloutofcareunits · 15/04/2026 18:29

I’m very rarely offended but this is awful! I’d definitely complain, as someone else said, many people lack confidence in going to the gym and this could put them off returning so I’m sure the manager would want to know! How rude!

I would avoid using the phrase as it has been hijacked my morbidly obese influencers who scream at people on the internet who dare to say that being dangerously overweight isn't healthy.

Personally I think shame is an emotion we feel, not one that others "do" to us.

I would give feedback though that making comments on people's bodies and at what stage of life they are at hormonally isn't really ideal. I would put my feedback in writing and keep it very factual and unemotional.

Parsleyforme · 15/04/2026 18:43

That would have been incredibly rude no matter your size. How horrible for that person to pick out a particular part of your body! There is also an inappropriate element of ageism/armchair diagnosis too. Yes I would complain and I doubt you’ll be the only person to

SqueakyFromme · 15/04/2026 18:46

how desperate for trade do you have to be to be such a nasty bully. Report this OP, there probably won’t be consequences though

Charlize43 · 15/04/2026 18:47

I was called a 'hag' by a schoolgirl when trying to get off the bus this afternoon. I'm 59. I'm afraid, it doesn't get any better with age!

Divebar2021 · 15/04/2026 18:47

Errr yep complain away.

( I once had a PT tell me that I was fitter than I looked…. Some of them could do with exercising their brains a bit more. )
