To be scared of the dark

CPNSBH · 14/04/2026 21:20

Last night my husband kept waking me up with his snoring.
No problem I thought I’ll go and sleep in my step daughters bedroom (she’s with her mum this week)
Now this isn’t a horrible room by any stretch of the imagination, it’s dark though, with black out blinds because that’s what she wanted.
The second I put my head on the pillow I started thinking about all things scary.. For some reason last night it was the film The Exorcist, in such detail I got to scared to stay in there and just went back to my own bed and put up with the snoring.
I’ve always been like this, if I’m alone in the dark I will instantly freak myself out with creepy thoughts of possession/poltergeists/ghosts.. Not even sure I believe in such things but in a dark room my mind will question.. But what if?!?
Anyone else? Ali

Is there no side light you could have put on?

CPNSBH · 14/04/2026 21:22

Fucksake, don’t know why I’ve added Ali at the end of the post, ignore this obviously.

She has a lamp but the bulb needs changing. The thing is I actually prefer a dark room myself to sleep in, just not alone.

Haha not quite the same but I am nervous going downstairs at night.

IHateAlzheimers · 14/04/2026 21:28

Meee! I am just like this. To make sure I get a good nights sleep I have an order to check my bedroom so I know once it is dark I am safe and secure and can sleep ( in my cocoon under the duvet of course). Once I wake in the night (old achy hips necessitate rolling over at 3am) then I have to turn on a lamp because who knows what is out there in the dark by that point. It's probably the only reason I ever fancy a man in my bed, to fight off the ghosts Grin ~notaeuphamism

brumpod · 14/04/2026 21:33

I'm scared of ghouls and ghosties too even though of course I don't believe in anything like that, no siree! However try telling that to myself at 3am when I'm alone in the dark!

I do enjoy paranormal stuff and I'd part of me would love to believe and maybe even witness something and another part thinks its all bollocks and too also too scary.

Gagamama2 · 14/04/2026 21:37

Ugh yes defintaetly. When I think about what I’m actually scared of in the dark though it’s men lurking there…I don’t believe in monsters etc…absolutely hate it when the kids forget to bring the guinea pigs in and I have to do it in the dark when they’re all in bed. Looking down at the end of the garden anyone could be down there…

I am the same but I also love all things spooky so I’m a glutton for punishment 🤣

Same, If there’s a horror film to watch you can guarantee I’ll be watching.

Fears in the dark -
something grabbing my foot if I leave it out of the covers.
rolling over and seeing a horrible face staring at me.
Getting out of bed and a hand grabbing my ankle…

Sorry! 🤣

brumpod · 14/04/2026 21:40

@Gagamama2 I think this is a much more rational fear and probably the one that all those of us scared of spooky stuff would be more reasonable to be scared of but I never worry about men coming for me I worry about spirits and demons!

Fontet · 14/04/2026 21:40

I am absolutely terrified of the dark. Always have been.

I can get this, at least yours is a rational fear and not.. What if I get possessed by a head spinning demon.

I think this is really common i always go to sleep with landing light on and with the telly on a sleep timer

Gingercar · 14/04/2026 21:42

I’m strange. I live rurally, no street lights, and am perfectly happy wandering around in the dark. I’ll take the dogs out before bed, or nip down to check the horses without a worry. But I used to be cabin crew and often had to get up in the middle of the night, and walking round the end of the house to my car used to really spook me. Before bed was fine, after having been to bed was creepy!

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 14/04/2026 21:43

We only have an upstairs bathroom. I love watching horror movies but I freak myself out. If I have to pause the film to pop up to the loo I then freak out coming back downstairs as I imagine someone is chasing me. I end up legging it back downstairs as fast as I can 😂

Yes, me too! Actually petrified

And it's not intruders I'm scared of coming across, but extra-terrestrials... 😬

The feet demons will grab your uncovered feet whether or not it is dark! Keep them covered.

A divan bed is essential.

@CPNSBH I'm not actually scared of the dark but I spend a lot of time in it so have excellent night vision. Plus I am far scarier than anything I encounter in the dark 😂
A friend always feared the dark and the only thing that helped her was a blindfold! Complete darkness rather than any lurking shadows playing mind tricks.

When I'm coming up the stairs in the dark on my own I have an irrational fear of a hand grabbing my legs through the spindles on the bannister !!!

Its the scene in 6th sense where the girl grabs him from under the bed that started that off !!!

ToffeePennie · 14/04/2026 21:52

I’m terrified of the dark. When DH is away for work or something I don’t sleep. Well, I do but in 15-20 min bursts and wake up all the time. It’s horrible.

Zov · 14/04/2026 21:58

Well Ali, Grin why not get a dim nightlight, so it's dark enough for you to sleep, but not so dark that you are creeped out.

doghasnoteeth · 14/04/2026 21:59

If husband away I always leave downstairs lights on and bathroom light on.

ChopstickNovice · 14/04/2026 22:12

I hate total pitch dark. We leave a downstairs lamp on overnight.

ChopstickNovice · 14/04/2026 22:12

(I also love the Podcast Uncanny so I am my own worst enemy!!)
