To be scared of the dark

CPNSBH · 14/04/2026 21:20

Last night my husband kept waking me up with his snoring.
No problem I thought I’ll go and sleep in my step daughters bedroom (she’s with her mum this week)
Now this isn’t a horrible room by any stretch of the imagination, it’s dark though, with black out blinds because that’s what she wanted.
The second I put my head on the pillow I started thinking about all things scary.. For some reason last night it was the film The Exorcist, in such detail I got to scared to stay in there and just went back to my own bed and put up with the snoring.
I’ve always been like this, if I’m alone in the dark I will instantly freak myself out with creepy thoughts of possession/poltergeists/ghosts.. Not even sure I believe in such things but in a dark room my mind will question.. But what if?!?
Anyone else? Ali

A lot less than I used to and there are reasons for that but I don't like the pitch black. I prefer to be under the covers. Also felt weird sleeping in the DC room recently.

Yes!! I love this episode. I did feel so sorry for (I can’t remember his name) he seemed genuinely terrified and it was horrible to think of him all alone in the world as a teenager.

Well I’m 62 and have a night light, I’m so afraid of the dark, after 35 years of marriage DH has learnt to live with it mind you he can sleep anywhere anytime !

I have to have the bedroom door open slightly I hate to be shut in a room doesn’t matter if I’m sleeping or not, the door must be open.

Endofyear · 15/04/2026 00:38

Nope, because ghosts aren't real and I'm a grown woman 🤣 I used to be afraid of witches under the bed as a small child though!

catsmother · 15/04/2026 00:41

I'm not scared of the dark per se, rather, of tripping over my black cat who, of course, is rendered invisible in the dark and often likes to sleep on the stairs or landing.

I figure that there are no ghosties or ghoulies in the house because my cats all seem perfectly happy to be here and have never displayed any signs they've detected something spooky. Consequently, I'll happily grope my way round in the dark (notwithstanding cat obstacles) to save putting lights on and waking others up.

Mine did 😱 Mine also had a sit on Winnie the Pooh toy car which had a dial on the front that you had to manipulate like a rotary phone to make a ringing noise. This would frequently go off in the middle of the night when his bedroom was empty (we co slept) 😱

I’m not always frightened of the dark, but if I’m overtired or very stressed, I find myself reverting back to childhood when I used to let my imagination run wild. I’ll suddenly start thinking that a hand might come up from under the bed and grab me. Or there’s someone hiding in the wardrobe (which is so packed there isn’t room for a small rodent, let alone a person!) Sometimes I think there’s a figure standing by the bed. So then the lamp has to go on to make it evaporate. It’s not very often, but the anxiety can be absolutely overwhelming.

Yes you are being unreasonable. Children are scared of the dark, not grown ups

Why ask if you only want one viewpoint?

Yes I felt sorry for him too. He seemed so genuine too, and I really believed him. Also, a number of his friends experienced the same thing he did a few times/saw the Shadow Man, so it's hard to see how he could have made it up. The sceptic on the show said it could be a group hallucination, but I doubt that...

Ridiculous comment.

I’ve seen things in my bedroom which i swore were beings! Luckily the cat now sleeps with me so unless she freaks out during the night I feel safer with her.

Your comment wasn't a 'viewpoint,' it was rude, and condescending, and looking down on the OP as if she's a big baby. 'Only CHILDREN are scared of the dark, not GROWN-UPS!!' Hmm

What a patronising and rude thing to say. It was not just a 'viewpoint.' 🙄

Just throwing this out there, but I bet my house that you think ghosts, the paranormal, the afterlife, out of the body experiences, and UFOs, and other unusual things are all nonsense, and 'made-up.' 🙄

.

Cats are the guardians of the underworld. They'll protect you!

PistachioTiramisu · 15/04/2026 10:18

I hate the dark - that's why I dislike winter so much. I never close my bedroom curtains and I have one of those safety lights plugged into the wall which gives off a bit of light. I also have loads of solar lights in the garden so if I have to go to the loo during the night I can look out at all of them!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 15/04/2026 10:18

I could never stay in my mum’s old house by myself, which was dark or not without someone else there. Her cats helped when she had them. As they slept with me. The dog helped too to keep me safe though sometimes he barks at anything! Didn’t help there were spooky goings on there apparently.
