To suspect police are worried about vigilantes - Epsom attack

I live relatively close to Epsom and so this appalling assault is all over my news feeds and social media.

BBC News - Town left in shock by appalling rape outside church
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dl5yevjg9o

The police have asked for witnesses but no descriptions have been given. Cue lots of very disturbing posts and comments from people who very clearly think these men are not white.

I can think of half a dozen scenarios where this is not being disclosed but, based on the comments, I think it all comes down to fears that local communities will take it on themselves to "apprehend" anyone who even vaguely looks like the perpetrators? And while the comments I am seeing are mostly white people being disgusting in their assumptions about brown and black people, i can imagine police would he equally concerned if, for example, the woman was Asian or Black and her attackers were white.

Is this where we are at? Where people make horrible racist assumptions and/or where police have to worry about how they will protect the broader community if they give any details of criminals?

Helen Maguire says she is "appalled" by the incident outside Epsom Methodist Church on Saturday.

Yes, all true. But in the current climate certain people will happily jump to certain conclusions every time a case like this is reported. We see it time after time. It is horribly depressing.

Edited

If you look at the nationalities of the men charged with gang rape in just the most recent set of attacks in the last 6 months, do you think a degree of pattern recognition is understandable?

Di you think the conclusions that people jump to are incorrect? If so, what is incorrect?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 17/04/2026 11:42

Which conclusions do you mean?

Faux ignorance in the hope the poster will say something that could enable you to Gotcha her and claim racism/bigotry.

Im honestly calling it out now every time I see it. If you think she’s bigoted just say it. Stop pretending you don’t understand.

Well her post above pretty much confirms that. She is honest about it, I'll give her that. Most aren't.

Why does it matter?

IamRedCrossnotJesus · 17/04/2026 12:48

EasternStandard · 17/04/2026 12:32

Why does it matter?

EABT was insistent that her googling was censoring content about AR's parents. No-one else was experiencing this.

So it could be her location affecting google. There are posters on MN in countries which block and censor internet content ( posters will cut and paste content for them, for example, as links are blocked).

So it is a fair question. But of course it is also fair for EABT not to want to say where she is.

How can I look at this information please? It does not appear to be published anywhere reputable. The latest information I could find from reputable sources (ONS, police and legal sites) are very clear that while some nationalities are disproportionately represented relative to the population, it is still mainly white men who commit these crimes. As you'd expect because we are a majority white country.

It’s another troll hunting post!!! I’m starting to think my posts must be very dangerous for the amount of people on here trying to make out I’m not real. It’s quite the compliment.

Quine0nline · 17/04/2026 13:53

Meanwhile a number of alleged rapists wander the streets of Epsom or...... Somewhere.

I don't think you are a troll EABT. So no troll hunting from me. None of my posts have been deleted.

I posted this on p25:

Another gang rape of a teenager in Bristol last November. 2 men of Afghan nationality charged and 2 men with unreported details charged. Link below,

There is also a trial coming up of an Iranian and 2 Egyptian migrants for a gang rape in Brighton October last year. Link below

Two Eritrean men wanted for gang rape in Denmark were reportedly here for 18 months in asylum accommodation. They have now been sent back to Denmark for trial.

So add that to the April Bristol attack reported by the victim as a gang rape we’ve just been discussing and that’s a worrying number of serious attacks on women by men with a common characteristic in the last few months. I haven’t looked further than that.

Obviously any search on this topic returns a huge number of results for the Rotherham/Oxford/Telford/Rochdale (approx 50-85 locations altogether suspected) to sift through but I only noted above the rapes not attributed to the grooming gangs. That is obviously a related topic but separate to this specific thread.

I hope Avon & Somerset police are a reputable enough source for you? Feel free to do your own research to compare the number of charges for gang rape by men of British nationality and origin over the same time period. I would be interested in your findings. I did do a quick search (as quick as the search which returned the info above in the interests of fairness but didn’t find anything useful)

Small boat migrant kept videos of beach rape as 'trophies', jury told

A small boat migrant saved videos of him taking part in a gang rape onto his phone as “trophies’, a court heard.

Thank you. I’ve been here 14 years on and off, so I’d be bloody commited to trolling the place if I was one.

I think it’s hard to listen to opinions that differ from your own and the natural reaction is to try and shut people down because it’s uncomfortable. My politics are centric. I can always see both sides which I know makes me seem slightly detached. I am very interested in the truth over the ideology and refuse to pick a side. I just want to know what the truth is which is why this case interested me.

If there’s a cover up, which seems to be assumption from some, I think that’s a dangerous precedent even if I can understand the motivation. If there’s censorship I also think that’s a slippery slope and I don’t like it. So I tend to push back against the orthodoxy, but that doesn’t make me a right wing bot or a Russian spy or someone that is being paid 🙈

ReadingCrimeFiction · 17/04/2026 15:40

So some posters on this thread do genuinely believe there is a persistent pattern of gang rape by immigrants? If you are going to take that approach and start to use that to asses risk (to women, to allowing immigrants etc), then you have to look at the data across multiple metrics. Eg what percentage of the immigrant male population are gang rapists? What percentage of rapeseed are gang rapes? Where is the MOST risk - ie where to focus priorities - and where is the risk most impact full- ie where the risk of gang rape reaches a point that its too high to allow any immigrant in for example.

The problem with taking a few incidents is thay awful though they are individually, we have to look at risk holistically. Although, to be fair, lots of people aren't able to do this in any aspect of their lives from whether to let their children walk home from school to when to throw away out of date chicken.

Ultimately, this goes back to my original point. I think the police are making decisions based on the risk to the broader community. That a generic description leads to hundreds or even thousands of local men being being put at risk. X100 if the generic description is for a brown or black man.

Police do put out descriptions when there’s a manhunt though.

Your post could apply to any crime.

Has anyone got thoughts on the latest update from Surrey Police.

It says (amongst other things) to date we have not found any evidence of the offense as reported but the investigation is ongoing.

Quite odd

IamRedCrossnotJesus · 17/04/2026 16:03

"During this time, we have been investigating in depth to establish the sequence of events and to clarify the circumstances surrounding the reported incident. We have reviewed an extensive amount of CCTV footage from the area. We have also been interviewing potential witnesses, carrying out forensics investigations and conducting house-to-house enquiries. To date, we have not found any evidence of the offence as reported but the investigation is ongoing.

There has been much speculation about the non-release of a description of any suspects, especially regarding the ethnicity. No descriptions have been released as the information about the incident and potential suspects is so limited. To address the specific commentary, there is no evidence that asylum seekers or immigrants were involved"

It’s coming across like the police are not believing the accuser, for whatever reason. Will wait to hear more.

Polkadottablecloth · 17/04/2026 16:04

local police say
‘There is no evidence of the incident as reported.’

They then go on to say that there are no links to immigrants, presumably as there is not enough evidence of the incident.

Serencwtch · 17/04/2026 16:06

EasternStandard · 17/04/2026 11:12

This post is speculating, there’s no evidence the allegations are ’not entirely true’.

It's very common in the early stages of a police investigation for Information to 'not match up' that does not mean the victim has lied, it can be due to the trauma, they may well have taken alcohol or drugs that may impair memory.

The victim may report it's happened at X location but CCTV confirms that wasn't the case, likely because their memory was impaired. They can't then release details until they confirm what has happened & where.

They are likely dealing with a very traumatized individual and lots of conflicting & contradicting information. They then have an angry mob & are concerned about the rioting following Southport.

They do need to be careful of releasing information that they know to be correct & verified.

When I read about it initially in a local news site I noticed they kept using language like "Allegedly" "The woman claims" etc. I did wonder, but didn't post about it as not fair on the woman if it had happened.

I understand about the traumatised victim situation and am not at all surprised they cant release descriptions yet.

Its just very sad the police have had to make that statement, which is for the protestors effectively, as it really doesn't read very well.
