How do clairvoyants know things??

Homer2 · 14/04/2026 13:45

I have never believed in this, I saw one once just for fun at my aunties house and she wasn’t great. She did say a few things that were accurate, but I put this down to being guesses or general vague things that would be relevant to the majority of people.

However, recently my friend went to one. She recently lost her dad and her partner. Without telling the clairvoyant anything, she knew how her partner died and what his name was. She mentioned my friends dad blowing kisses in a weird way, with the palm of his hand instead of his fingers, which is something he did used to do. How would she know these things??? I don’t honestly believe in it, but can’t understand how she’d know such specific things

There really is @HatStickBoots here's that article I came across last night, I hope I'm allowed post links & that it works...

https://www.tuftandneedle.com/blogs/wellness/what-is-sleep-paralysis

annoyingly it skips part two but the third part is really interesting about SP in different culturals & the Arts

What Is Sleep Paralysis?

Imagine waking up and your entire body is stuck in a state of paralysis. The terror itself is overwhelming, but then, it gets worse.

That picture is a trypophobe’s nightmare.

Scorchio84 · 16/04/2026 22:07

Is it @nomas shit sorry, I am up there with you as a trypophobe but I don't see it, I can't even look at honeycombs or eat crumpets so I'm usually hyper aware, sorry for any distress!

Haha no worries mine is mild!

And you’re right it’s not traditional trypophobia imagery.

When did you develop yours?

This is an interesting watch - Derek Acorah being revealed as a fake on Most Haunted. I agree with Ciaran's distinction between being a sceptic and being a cynic. I'd love for supernatural stuff to be true! I want to believe...but not without evidence, please.

Thanks. YouTube served up Derren Brown's show about psychics, which I'd been looking for *is YouTube psychic?!!

It's a double episode, but you can skip in & out without losing the sense. It includes the week he spent with the awful Joe Power.

- YouTube

Enjoy the videos and music that you love, upload original content and share it all with friends, family and the world on YouTube.

Phew! My trypophobia or SP? I'm really not covering myself in glory on this thread 😆

So I've always had trypophobia but I don't think I was aware of how common it is other than it being "one of those things" like the way people are funny with tinfoil or cottonballs...until the internet came along 😆How about you?

HatStickBoots · 17/04/2026 08:08

I’ve bookmarked your posts @Scorchio84 and have never heard of tyrophobia so will be looking into that too. If we’ve gone off topic too much, I’d love it if you started a new thread in Sleep ❤️

@GarlicFind I love Derren Brown!

@GarlicFind I love Derren Brown!

He's excellent. I've read one of his books and it's illuminating about how you can read people, and deceive them! A fascinating study of human psychology.

I am very religious but I don't believe in any of this.

I am very spiritually attuned so if anything was going to happen I would know.

I am very spiritually attuned

What the actual fuck does that mean?

As in I am very religious so I have always been open to the idea of anything super natural (like ghosts) but never found any evidence of it.

It doesn’t exist. Only God.

For whose existence there is abundant evidence?

Yes, to me there is. You are free to not believe, same as I don’t believe in clairvoyants.

There’s as much evidence for clairvoyants’ abilities as there is for the existence of an omnipotent, omniscient, benevolent deity.

Troutbag · 18/04/2026 12:20

To be clear, there is no cogent, verifiable, independently tested evidence for clairvoyance, mediumship, ghosts, life after death, or God.

Fine if you believe in spite of that, but let’s not pretend there’s any proper evidence for any of them.

Lifeomars · 18/04/2026 12:26

pre internet they relied on open ended questions and body language plus a person's willingness to be convinced/conned. Just say to someone "I can see you have had loss in your life" and take it from there. These days they can use Google, Facebook (if you are haven't used the privacy settings), Instagram, and so on. Plus they only tell people things that they already know which has always struck me as bizarre. Why pay to be told about things that have aleady happened.

Yes, and people are free to believe and disbelieve as they wish, why is that a problem for you.

Thread is about clairvoyants not God though.

It’s not a problem at all. You were simply the one who said there was no evidence for the existence of ghosts. There’s equally no evidence for the existence of any deities.

No, I said I personally had found no evidence of the supernatural. That doesn’t preclude you.

Some people can tune in to your thoughts and subconscious knowledge, like tuning into a radio station. Similar to Morphic Resonance. I knew someone who had this ability, and she said it was a curse. But note, they can only tell you something you already know - they can make predictions based on their experience or observations, but I don't see how they can know the future. This woman correctly told me (after I pushed her to tune in) that I was carrying twins and what their sexes would be. This was before I knew, but of course my body knew!

These are the people with that ability. There are also lots of charlatans around, who are clever in getting people to reveal stuff without them realising.

No they can't. Nobody can, or has ever been able to do this.

I had a colleague who was a nurse working with people who were critically ill / receiving palliative care. She used to know who was next to pass away because she would see the spirits of their relatives who had already passed surround their bed in the hour before they passed themselves. 100% accuracy. She didn’t tell many people about it because she knew people would disbelieve her and she certainly never told the patient or their living relatives. I think it was quite a burden for her.

No she wouldn't. She was either lying to you or seriously mentally unwell.

ThatCyanCat · 18/04/2026 15:12

Derren Brown included the full text of a cold reading that he gave to a load of people, in his book Tricks of the Mind. It's very clever. They all thought it was incredibly accurate and personal to them, in fact a couple were a bit upset and unsettled at how intrusive it felt. He gave it to a group of Spanish people too and when he passed it to a translator to translate into Spanish for them, she thought he had meant it as a reading for her and was playing some sort of joke on her. It was tailored for bright people in their early 20s, which is how old I was when I read the book, and dang if it wasn't rather accurate for me as well. Yes, even the bit about having a connection to America or having a feeling I was born in the wrong time. Have I outed myself saying that?

Most of it, of course, was extremely universal but written in such a way that it seemed personal (there was some clever paraphrasing of "you are closer to your friends than you are to people you don't know very well") and it was also rather flattering, with an undertone of "how deep and interesting you are", and we all know what flattery will do to you.

It was very clever. And I actually find it comforting, in a way. The feelings you have, that you struggle with, that might make you feel alone, are actually very very common and part of what binds us all as humans.
